Dans l’univers du black métal, Vreid est un nom déjà bien établi. Pionniers de leur scène locale à Songdal en Norvège, le groupe s’est formé en 2004, renaissant des cendres du légendaire groupe WINDIR. En 2018, VREID nous a gâté avec Lifehunger, leur meilleur album à cette date. Ce disque est immédiatement devenu mon préféré de leur discographie, et même l’un de mes albums favoris de black métal, point. Lifehunger a généré une réponse massivement positive de la part des critiques et des fans. VREID en étaient à leur plus populaire. Alors, lorsqu’est venu le moment d’écrire l’album suivant, la barre était haute. Le groupe le savait bien. Au lieu d’essayer de surpasser musicalement leur sortie de 2018, VREID s’est réinventé. Après plus d’un an de processus créatif, ils ont sorti non pas un simple album, mais un album concept (une première en carrière) accompagné d’un film tout entier. Sans blague! Huit chansons, huit vidéoclips qui s’enchaînent pour former un film, un scénario captivant et tout un tas de musique lourde à souhait. Bienvenue dans le Wild North West!

L’album commence avec la chanson titre Wild North West et wow, tout un départ! Un clavier sombre donne bientôt place à un riff de guitare glacial à donner la chair de poule. La voix est excellente, la qualité VREID typique est au rendez-vous. Le bridge a ces accords en trémolo classiques du black métal qui m’ont laissés toute frissonnante. L’harmonie des voix vers la fin de la chanson est tout simplement parfaite. On voit tout de suite qu’on va en avoir pour notre argent. Wolves at Sea est aussi lourde que possible. En concert, ça sera le moment de faire du « headbang » et du « windmill » à s’en déboîter le cou! La finale mélodique au piano est unique. The Morning Red nous donne l’occasion de reprendre notre souffle, avec son tempo plus lent et son atmosphère lugubre et ténébreuse. La batterie est mise de l’avant ici, le mixage est de qualité impeccable. La grosse caisse sonne lourde, grasse comme de l’huile, chaque coup résonne dans la poitrine. Shadows of Aurora commence avec une intro à la basse qui laisse présager du doom métal, jusqu’à ce qu’une guitare frénétique et une batterie galopante reprennent le dessus d’une manière saisissante. Cette chanson n’épargne personne! Le solo de fou au milieu rappelle distinctement le trash métal. Spikes of God maintien l’intensité au maximum avec un son classique du black métal des années 90 à faire froid dans le dos. Cette chanson dissonante et perturbante nous prend par la gorge et refuse de lâcher, soyez prêts. Dazed and Reduced fait un 180° total: mélodies accrocheuses, chant clair, un hymne rock tout droit sortit des années 80 qui donne envie de chanter. Le ver d’oreille de l’album, c’est sur. Si vous ne connaissez pas encore VREID, voici votre porte d’entrée pour apprivoiser leur son sans tomber dans les éléments extrêmes tout de suite.

Into the Mountains est aisément le point culminant de l’album. À la première écoute, j’en ai eu les larmes aux yeux et je n’arrivais pas à comprendre pourquoi cette chanson me rentrait dedans comme ça. La raison? Si comme moi vous êtes grands fans de WINDIR et que vous connaissez l’histoire tragique du groupe, il y a de bonnes chances que vous soyez vous-aussi émus: Valfar est crédité sur la chanson. Le compositeur de VREID, Jarle, a expliqué comment, lors de l’écriture de l’album, il a retrouvé des vieux enregistrements au clavier faits en 2002 par Terje ‘Valfar’ Bakken avant son tragique décès. Jarle a construit Into the Mountains autour de ces enregistrements non utilisés auparavant, et il décrit que c’était comme s’il écrivait enfin à nouveau de la musique avec lui, vingt ans plus tard. L’émotion s’entend dès la première note. La chanson est à la fois un produit du métal d’il y a vingt ans et une œuvre purement moderne. Ce mélange de l’ancien et du nouveau, de l’hommage et de l’innovation, couplé à la présence singulière de Valfar, font de cette chanson une pièce maîtresse inoubliable qui va rester longtemps avec moi. S’ensuit la finale du disque, Shadowland. Un intro cinématique à l’orgue annonce la fin de l’aventure. La signature VREID est présente tout au long de la chanson de dix minutes qui nous guide pas à pas vers la sortie de la forêt dense du Wild North West. Au moment où le disque se termine, j’ai envie de le repartir. Un 10\10, fortement recommandé, particulièrement en version film!

In the world of black metal, Vreid are a well established household name. Pioneers of their local scene from Songdal, Norway, the band formed in 2004 from the ashes of legendary band Windir. In 2018, Vreid blessed us with their best release to date, Lifehunger. This album immediately cemented itself as my favorite from their discography, and one of my favorite black metal albums altogether. Lifehunger received an overwhelmingly positive reception across the board from critics and fans alike. Vreid were at their most popular. So when time came to write the follow up album, the bar was high. The guys knew it. Instead of simply trying to surpass their 2018 release, they reinvented themselves. After a year-long creative process, they produced not just an album, but a concept album (a first in their discography) and a whole movie. No joke! 8 songs, 8 music videos strung together to make a movie, one captivating storyline, and a whole lot of heavy music. Welcome to the Wild North West.

The album starts with the title track and wow, what a start! Grim keys soon make way to an icy cold riff that sent shivers down my arms. The vocals are excellent as always, that Vreid quality right there. The bridge has that classic black metal tremolo picking that left me tingly all over. The vocal harmonics in the second half are perfect. You know you’re in for a ride. Wolves at Sea is as heavy as can be. In a live setting, that’s the song to headbang and windmill to! The melodic piano ending makes it stand out. The Morning Red gives you a breather with a slower tempo and a moody, gloomy feel. The drums especially shine here: the mixing of the drums on this albums is outstanding. It’s heavy and sticky like oil, it pounds through you. Shadows of Aurora starts with a doomy bass-heavy intro, up until fast paced guitars and galloping drums take over to give you whiplash. This track spares no one. The face melting solo in the middle has a distinct trash metal feel. Spikes of God maintain the momentum with a decidedly spookier, 90s black metal fare. The dissonant, disturbing track takes you by the throat and refuses to let go, you better be ready. Dazed and Reduced does a complete 180°: catchy melody, clean signing, a rock anthem straight out of the 80s to sing along to. The earworm of the album for sure. If you’re new to Vreid, this is a great entry point to get a feel for their sounds with less extreme elements.

Into the Mountains is easily the album’s highlight. At first listen, it brought me to tears and I couldn’t figure out why this song was hitting me so hard. Turns out, if you’re a Windir fan just like me and you know the band’s history, the song might make you just as emotional: Valfar is on it. Vreid’s songwiter, Jarle, explained how he found unused keyboard tracks recorded in 2002 by late Terje ‘Valfar’ Bakken and wrote Into the Mountains with them, as if he’d been working on music with Valfar again. You can tell from the first note. It simultaneously feels like a song from 20 years ago and the most modern Vreid song. This blend of the old and the new, the homage and the innovation, with Valfar’s distinctive touch, creates an unforgettable masterpiece of a song that is sure to stay with you. We then move on to the album’s closer, Shadowland. A cinematic organ intro signals the end of the journey. Vreid’s signature is present throughout the 10 minute track that walks you out of the dense forest of the Wild North West. As soon as it ended, I wanted to spin the record again. 10\10 album. Highly recommended, especially in movie form!
