19 avril, sortie du deuxième album du groupe parisien HOMECOMING, Those We Knew. J’ai eu le privilège de l’écouter quelques jours auparavant, voici mes impressions.

Le premier titre, « Tell Me Something », donne le ton : de l’alternatif mâtiné de ce qu’on appelle maintenant le post-metal, qu’on peut déceler dans la façon de chanter, la rythmique sèche, les sonorités de guitares et, je cite, des « riffs ébouriffants ». C’est tout à fait ça. Et on en a pour longtemps – la pièce dure 17 minutes. Si déjà vous trouvez ça trop long, passez à l’appel suivant, car c’est le modus operandi du groupe sur cet album. On profite tout de même d’une pause au milieu, nous permettant de souffler pendant la traversée de cet album qui est annoncé comme « une passerelle » et ayant pour thèmes les passages obligés et l’espoir. « Red Rose », deuxième titre, suit un peu la même structure, avec une pause à un peu plus que la moitié, sauf que le chanteur pousse la note et crie davantage. En général, ça me plaît moins quand les chanteurs ne font que crier, mais ici ça passe car c’est bien dosé, à mon avis. « Blood Of My Blood » est aussi une longue pièce, soit 14 minutes. Elle commence plus tranquillement, mais s’alourdit et s’intensifie après environ cinq minutes, et respecte ainsi la charpente de l’album. Sur cette pièce, les thèmes sont plus présent puisque je comprends davantage les paroles, chantées d’une voix naturelle et chaleureuse, ce qui m’incite aussi à porter davantage attention.

L’ instrumentale « Interlude II » nous offre une magnifique intro de guitare avec effet de reverb, de même qu’un son que je qualifierais de « flottant ». Pourtant, ça ne dure pas, la musique prend de la vitesse et du momentum, en phase avec les autres pièces. « Shores » est le premier extrait de l’album, et me donne des impressions de prog tranquille mais non, puisque après quatre minutes environ, ouf ça déboule, et la voix se transforme totalement. Cette pièce illustre très bien comment il ne faut pas se fier à une première impression quand on écoute de la musique. Par sa durée, soit un bon dix minutes, elle me fait aussi réaliser que le groupe est vraiment dédié à son art, et pourtant, à l’écoute, je n’ai pas l’impression que c’est trop long, le temps file et je ne le vois pas passer. Le dernier titre, « Gift of Eyes », représente bien l’ensemble de l’œuvre, elle boucle la boucle. D’ailleurs, sur celle-ci j’entends mieux l’influence black metal à la batterie, pourtant présente ici et là sur tout l’album. Les pièces suivant souvent une même structure, je souligne que celle-ci fait exception, puisqu’elle se termine lentement. Je regarde alors autour de moi et je pense « déjà fini »?

Conclusion : J’hésite à nommer des groupes en comparaison, car les influences sont nombreuses, et je pense qu’il ne faut pas se limiter à ces influences puisqu’elles sont bien intégrées et rendues. Disons simplement qu’on balance entre Bush version metal et Tool.

Au final, j’ai bien aimé cet album de HOMECOMING, il est bien bâti, équilibré, l’ordre des pièces est bien choisi, et ces pièces ont chacune un petit élément qui les démarque. Je recommande Those We Knew à quiconque voudrait écouter autre chose sans que ce soit nécessairement nouveau, et à ceux qui ont besoin d’introspection mais aussi d’exprimer leurs émotions, sans que ce soit trop brutal. Ce pourquoi je précise qu’il faut être dans un état d’esprit particulier pour se laisser totalement porter par les paroles et l’ambiance créées sur Those We Knew.

April 19th, release of Those We Knew, Parisian band HOMECOMING’s second album. I had the privilege of listening to it a few days beforehand, so here are my impressions.

The first track, « Tell Me Something », sets the tone: it’s alternative rock mixed with what we now call post-metal, noticeable in the vocals, the dry rhythm, the guitar tones and, I quote, « blistering riffs ». That’s it. And we’re in for a long ride – the track lasts 17 minutes. If you think it’s already too long, move along, because that’s the band’s modus operandi on this album. Still, there’s a break in the middle, allowing us to take a breather as we make our way through this album, which is billed as « a gateway », with life milestones and hope as themes. « Red Rose », the second track, follows much of the same structure, with a pause at just over the halfway point, except that the singer pushes the note and shouts more. I don’t usually like it when singers just shout, but here it’s just right, in my opinion. « Blood Of My Blood » is also a long track, clocking in at 14 minutes. It starts more quietly, but gets heavier and more intense after about five minutes, and thus fits the album’s framework. On this track, the themes are more present, as I understand the lyrics better, sung in a natural, warm voice, which also encourages me to pay closer attention.

« Interlude II », an instrumental track, offers a magnificent guitar intro with reverb, as well as a sound that I would describe as « floating ». Yet it doesn’t last, as the music picks up speed and momentum, in phase with the other tracks. « Shores » is the first single from the album, and seems to be flirting with tranquil prog, but no, after four minutes or so, phew, it’s all over the place, and the voice is totally transformed. It’s a good example of how one can’t rely on first impressions when listening to music. Lasting a good ten minutes, it also makes me realize that the band is truly dedicated to their art, and yet, listening to it, I don’t get the impression that it’s too long: time flies and I don’t see it go by. The last track, « Gift of Eyes », represents the whole work well, coming full circle. In fact, on this one I can hear the black metal influence of the drums more clearly, even though they are present here and there throughout the album. The tracks often follow the same structure, but this one is an exception, as it ends slowly. I then look around me and think « it’s already over »?

In the end, I hesitate to name bands in comparison, as there are many influences, and I don’t think one should limit themselves to these influences, as they are well integrated and rendered. Let’s just say that it goes from Tool to a more metal version of Bush and back.

All in all, I enjoyed this album from HOMECOMING: it’s well-constructed, well-balanced, the pacing of the tracks is well chosen, and each one has a little element that sets it apart. I’d recommend Those We Knew to anyone who wants to listen to something different but not necessarily new, and to those who need introspection but also want to express their emotions, without it being too brutal. Which is why I’d like to point out that you need to be in a particular state of mind to let yourself be totally carried away by the lyrics and atmosphere created on Those We Knew.
