Ma relation avec ce groupe est exactement ce qu’elle aspire d’être : mythique ! Le moment où nous nous sommes croisées, je ne m’en souviens même pas, mais ils se sont musicalement glissés dans beaucoup de mes listes de lecture depuis des années. Jusqu’à une écoute intensive de « The Sacrements of Sins » en 2018 où ils m’ont converti pour de bon !
Ces Allemands s’inspirent de légendes, d’histoires de saints, de pécheurs et à la tentation du mal, mais nous laissant toujours dans l’incertitude: à l’auditeur d’en faire sa propre définition. « Call of the Wild » suit très bien cette veine. Ce mystère ambigu est toujours présent et je ne m’attendais à rien d’autre.
Depuis mon écoute des singles (et vidéos), je voulais être envoyé dans un monde rempli de (belles) noirceurs où le bien et le mal deviennent ce que j’en fais. Les capacités vocales d’Attila Dorn m’ont fait frissonner dans leur single « Dancing with the dead ». Je suis très satisfaite, car voici qu’encore une fois, j’assiste à une glorieuse messe métal aux rythmes rapides tel que dans « Faster than the flame » ou « Sermon of Swords », ou encore avec d’ambivalents textes eucharistiques (qui parfois font rougir) comme avec « Glaubenskraft » et « Undress to Confess ». Un appel au relâchement de notre bête intérieur avec la pièce titre « Call of the Wild ». POWERWOLF a sorti Missa Cantorem, un album de dix chansons chantées par d’autres artistes. Est-ce que « Demons are a girl’s best friend » par Alissa White-Glutz vous dit quelque chose?
Ma seule petite déception : « La Bête du Gévaudan ». La version française « The Beast of Gévaudan » n’est pas inclus sur cet album, n’étant disponible que sur disque ou en streaming. Mais depuis leur première et triomphale tournée en Amérique du Sud, peut-être qu’avec un peu de Foi, je pourrai l’entendre live au Canada dans un futur rapproché. En attendant, je vais continuer à brûler de l’encens !

My relationship with this band is exactly what they expect to be: mystical! The moment we crossed the path, I don’t even remember, but they musically slipped into many of my playlists for years. Until I gave an intense listening to “The sacrament of Sins” in 2018 where they have converted me for good.
These Germans draw heavily on legends, stories of saints, sinners and the temptation of evil but always leaving uncertainty for the listeners to make their own definition. “Call of the Wild” still following the same artery.
This ambiguous mystery is still present as I expected nothing else.
After listening (and watching) the singles, I only wanted to be propelled into a world full of (beautiful) darkness where good and evil is what I have defined. Attila Dorn’s vocal capabilities have given me shivers in their single ‘Dancing with the Dead”. I was very pleased because here is, once again, a glorious metal mass with simple but fast rhythms like “Faster Than The Flame” or “Sermon of Swords”, ambivalent Eucharists lyrics (sometimes blushing) of “Glaubenskraft” or “Undress to Confess”, a call to untamed your inner beast with the title track “Call of the Wild”. POWERWOLF also released Missa Cantorem, an album of 10 of their songs sang by other artists. Is “Demons are a girl’s best friend” by Alissa White-Glutz ring a bell?
My only small disappointment: “La bête du Gévaudan” , the French version of “The Beast of Gévaudan” is not included on the album as it is only available on disk or in streaming. But since their first and successful tour in South America in 2020, maybe with a little Faith I will hear that version live in Canada in a near future. In the meantime, i will keep burning incense.
