FESTIVAL D’ÉTÉ DE QUÉBEC FEQ – SCÈNE BELL – IMAGINE DRAGONS + TALK + GRANDSON – 07.07.2023

Rendez-vous sur les Plaines ce soir, sous une chaleur accablante et, on l’espère, sans orage. Car c’est bien connu qu’au FEQ, il y aura toujours un orage un soir sur les 10 jours que dure le festival. En plus, cet été, on reçoit la visite d’IMAGINE DRAGONS et de FOO FIGHTERS qui tous deux avaient dû, il y a quelques années, annuler leur prestation après quelques chansons pour cette raison. Mais bon, soyons optimistes!

C’est GRANDSON qui ouvre la soirée, avec son mélange de rock/pop/rap à la Twenty One Pilots. Je ne connais pas ce groupe, et je trouve que ça commence très bien, alors que je prends des photos. Ils ne sont que trois sur scène, avec comme seuls instruments une guitare et une batterie, d’où la nécessité d’avoir des pistes enregistrées de cuivres et de piano.

C’est mon seul bémol à la prestation, par ailleurs très bonne, car je pense que l’ajout de musiciens serait un gros plus. Le rythme ralentit déjà à la quatrième pièce, mais Jordan Edward Benjamin, au micro, interagit constamment avec la foule qui lui répond de belle façon, l’encourageant à participer en sautant et en chantant.

Je souligne l’effort de Jordan de parler en français et son dynamisme partagé avec le guitariste – il ira même jusqu’à grimper dans une des échelles de la structure près des écrans géants! Quelque chose me dit que GRANDSON reviendra faire son tour à Québec un jour! Morceau choisi : « Riptide ».

L’attente n’est pas trop longue avant que TALK (Nicholas Durocher) fasses son apparition en grande pompe. L’artiste ne fait pas les choses à moitié : il est imposant, il porte le fleurdelisé comme une cape, il s’est mis des paillettes sur le visage, et ses trois acolytes sont en bleu de travail.

C’est un personnage flamboyant, un « super entertainer » qui aime son public et que le public aime (salutations à La Poune).

Il a même un tatouage de notre drapeau national! Sa présence et sa voix sont exceptionnelles, il parle en français, lui aussi fait participer la foule, il parle beaucoup, bref il est né pour être sur la scène.

C’est sa deuxième visite au FEQ, étant venu l’an passé, et ses fans l’attendent avec impatience.

On a droit à des embrassades, un lancement de chaussures et de t-shirts, à un rigodon bien tourné, à un mix de Bon Jovi et Collective Soul pendant une des chansons (je retrouve plus le titre, désolée) et à un changement de costume encore plus flamboyant pour « Run Away to Mars ». Ouf! La rythmique est vraiment bonne, mais parfois trop forte en ce sens qu’elle fait littéralement vibrer les caméras. Ça se termine avec « School of Rock », un préféré de TALK, et le groupe s’en donne à cœur joie pour clore sa prestation. Morceaux choisis : « Afraid of the Dark » et « Run Away to Mars », qui m’ont tiré des larmes.

Enfin, prise 2 pour IMAGINE DRAGONS! Au programme : 17 pièces tirées de tous leurs albums, des explosions de confettis, serpentins et colonnes de boucane dès le début, un visuel épuré mais coloré et, oui, un peu de pluie.

Tel un prédicateur, le chanteur Dan Reynolds s’amène sur la passerelle habillé d’une chemise blanche et d’un pantalon noir, et commence avec « Believer » et « It’s Time », comme il y a quatre ans.

C’est tenter le sort, vraiment. Mais la foule est déjà conquise, elle suivrait Dan les yeux fermés. Encore ici, il y a interaction, les fans sont complètement dedans, la foule chante en chœur, que ce soit pendant « Bad Liar », « Demons » ou « Radioactive ».

C’est incroyablement merveilleux, en plus de toutes les lumières qui s’allument dans la foule pendant  « Bad Liar », justement. « Lonely » est la pièce qui, je pense, définit vraiment le style du groupe comme du « rock chrétien », même si parfois ça sonne comme du Eminem pop (hihi). Pour rigoler, on se fait raconter que le seul intérêt de la pièce « Sharks » c’est de pouvoir chanter « woop woop », et il y a plusieurs moments significatifs, entre autres lorsque Dan prend (et redonne) un drapeau de l’Ukraine pendant « Enemy ». Parlant. Dan reste sur la passerelle la plupart du temps et sourit à voir toutes les pancartes – et oui il y en a beaucoup. Pendant ce show tout en son et lumière, on peut entendre quelques séquences, en autres de violon pendant « On Top of the World », pas le choix, mais on se fait offrir une superbe finale au piano pour « Radioactive ». Les confettis ne cessent de pleuvoir, je ne vois pas le temps passer, IMAGINE DRAGONS est entré dans les ligues majeures, c’est certain. Morceau choisi : « Bad Liar ».

Une autre soirée mémorable au FEQ!

Rendez-vous on the Plaines tonight, in sweltering heat and let’s hope no thunderstorms. Because, you know, the FEQ has this tendency to get hit by a thunderstorm at least one night out of the 10 days of the festival. What’s more, this summer Imagine Dragons and Foo Fighters are on the bill, both of whom had to, a few years ago, cancel their shows after a few songs for this very reason. But let’s be optimistic!

GRANDSON is opening the evening, with their Twenty One Pilots-style mix of rock/pop/rap. I’d never heard of this band, and I think they’re off to a great start, as I’m taking photos. There are only three of them on stage, guitar and drums only, hence the need for pre-recorded brass section and piano tracks. For me, this is the only downside to the otherwise very good performance, as I think the addition of musicians would be a big plus. The pace is already slowing down by the fourth piece, but Jordan Edward Benjamin, on vocals, is constantly interacting with the crowd, who responds in fine fashion, encouraging them to participate by jumping up and down and singing along. Jordan’s effort to speak in French and his energy shared with the guitarist – he even goes as far as to climb one of the ladders in the structure near the giant screens – are particularly noteworthy. Something tells me GRANDSON will be back in Quebec City one day! Highlight: « Riptide” 

It doesn’t take too long before TALK (Nicholas Durocher) makes his grand entrance. The artist doesn’t do things halfway: he’s imposing, he’s wearing the fleurdelisé flag like a cape, he has glitter on his face, and his three acolytes are in overalls. He’s a flamboyant character, a « super entertainer » who loves his audience and whom the audience loves (hats off to La Poune). He even has a tattoo of our national flag! His presence and voice are exceptional, he speaks in French, he too gets the crowd involved, he talks a lot – in short, he was born to be on stage. This is his second visit to the FEQ, having been here last year, and his fans are waiting impatiently for him. We’re treated to hugs, a shoe and T-shirt throwing act, a pleasingly executed “rigodon”, a Bon Jovi/Collective Soul mix during one of the songs (I can’t remember the title, sorry) and an even more flamboyant costume change for « Run Away to Mars ». Whew! The rhythm section is really good, but sometimes too loud as it’s literally making the cameras shake. The performance ends with « School of Rock », a TALK favorite, and the band give it all they’ve got to close their set. Highlights: « Afraid of the Dark » and « Run Away to Mars », which brought tears to my eyes.

Finally, it’s take 2 for IMAGINE DRAGONS! On the program: 17 songs from all their albums, explosions of confetti, streamers and columns of smoke right from the start, a simple but colorful visual and, yes, a little rain. Like a preacher, singer Dan Reynolds takes to the catwalk dressed in a white shirt and black pants, and begins with « Believer » and « It’s Time », just as he did four years ago. He’s tempting fate, really. But the crowd is already wrapped around his finger and would follow Dan with their eyes closed. Here again, there’s interaction, the fans are completely into it, the crowd sings along, whether during « Bad Liar », « Demons » or « Radioactive ». It’s incredibly wonderful, not to mention all the lights that come on in the crowd during « Bad Liar ». « Lonely » is the song that I think really defines the band’s style as « Christian rock », even if it sometimes sounds as if Eminem went pop (lol). As a joke, we’re told that the only point of « Sharks » is to be able to sing « woop woop », and there are several significant moments, including when Dan takes (and gives back) a Ukrainian flag during « Enemy ». Telling. Dan stays on the catwalk most of the time and smiles at the sight of all the signs held up by the fans – and yes there are a lot of them. During this sound and light performance, a few sequences can be heard, including violin during « On Top of the World » – there’s no other option – but we are treated to a superb piano finale for « Radioactive ». The confetti keeps raining down, I can’t see the time passing, IMAGINE DRAGONS have definitely entered the big leagues. Hightlight: « Bad Liar”.

Once again a memorable night at the FEQ!
