Vous savez, le sentiment qu’un bon film d’horreur bien dégueulasse nous donne? Quand le visuel et l’environnement sonore du film nous rend inconfortable, quand la bile nous monte dans la gorge mais qu’on est obligés de continuer de regarder? Cette émotion précise, c’est ce que Seething Malevolence, le nouvel album du groupe américain VOMIT FORTH, m’a fait vivre. Et je dis ça avec plein d’affection. Fans de gros death métal brutal, voici un groupe pas mal nouveau qui vaudrait le détour. Formé en 2018 au Connecticut, VOMIT FORTH a sorti quelques démos et EP depuis. Ils en sont finalement à leur premier long jeu complet suivant leur signature avec Century Media Records. Si vous aimez NAPALM DEATH, FULL OF HELL, INTERNAL BLEEDING ou SCATTERED REMAINS par exemple, Seething Malevolence sera peut-être votre prochaine dose de choix de violence musicale.
L’album est très court. Onze chansons pour une durée de moins de 30 minutes. La majorité des morceaux tournent autour du deux minutes. Vous en comprendrez donc que VOMIT FORTH ne laisse aucune chance à l’auditeur de s’en sortir. Cet album est un assaut saturé d’énergie au maximum. J’imagine déjà le genre de moshpit que ça ferait en concert. L’ambiance film d’horreur \ jeu vidéo d’horreur est immédiatement présente. Par exemple la chanson Eucharist Intact a cette section vers 1:30, une espèce de drone menaçant derrière les paroles, qui rappelle le type de design sonore utilisé dans un jeu vidéo lorsque le joueur se fait chasser par un monstre. C’est comme un réflexe dans le corps, l’envie de courir, de s’enfuir. Très efficace. Ce son ne déroge pas, de retour dans Tortured Sacrament, dans la finale de Unrecognizable, et sous forme d’un rire maléfique au milieu de la chanson titre Seething Malevolence. L’auditeur se sent comme une proie à la merci de cet album. C’est une bonne ligne directrice. Les paroles vont en ce sens aussi, typiques descriptions gores et morbides comme on s’y attend d’un tel genre de métal.
On remarque aussi un effort marqué de faire dans le old school. Le mixage rappelle le son du death métal à la fin des années 80, début des années 90, dans l’ère des fanzines, des échanges de casettes de groupes tellement underground que tout s’envoyait par la poste avec des étiquettes de logos dessinés à la main sur les enveloppes. Les compositions sont vieille école, bien que le “tuning » des guitares et certains types de techniques vocales soient modernes. Un beau mélange de nostalgie qui plaira aux fans de brutal death dans ces années là. Il suffit de jeter un œil au vidéo pour la chanson Predatory Savior pour le voir. Le clip est filmé et monté comme un de ces anciens VHS glauques de légendes urbaines. Ça tape directement là où il faut. La chanson décrit comment le monde dans lequel nous vivons n’est pas sécuritaire pour personne. Comment les forces au pouvoir qui devraient nous protéger sont les mêmes forces qui seraient prêtes à nous détruire en un instant. Un sentiment bien pertinent de nos jours.

You know the feeling when you’re watching a horror movie and a particularly gory moment catches you off guard and freezes you to the spot? When the visuals and soundscape of the movie makes you so uncomfortable, bile’s up at the back of your throat and you just can’t look away? Yeah, that. That’s the exact feeling I got during my first listen of Seething Malevolence, the new album from Connecticut based outfit VOMIT FORTH. And I say that with the utmost affection. Brutal death metal fans, come over here and take a peek at this rather new project. Formed in 2018, VOMIT FORTH have released a couple demos and EPs, but now it’s finally time for their first full length album, released through Century Media Records. If you like bands like NAPALM DEATH, FULL OF HELL, INTERNAL BLEEDING or SCATTERED REMAINS, Seething Malevolence might just be your fix for your next dose of musical violence.
The record is very short. Eleven songs for a total of less than 30 minutes. Most tracks run around the two minute mark. Needless to say, VOMIT FORTH doesn’t give a single chance to their listeners: this album is an onslaught of raw, buzzing energy. It’s a tornado you want to be swept by. I can only imagine the moshpits this would generate in a live setting. The horror movie \ horror video game atmosphere is solidly established from the get go. My favorite example of it would be that section in Eucharist Intact around 1:30. There’s a weird jarring noise there, a sort of menacing glitchy drone right below the vocals that immediately reminded me of video game sound design, when the player’s chased by a boss monster. My body was stimulated by reflex, I felt like I wanted to run and hide. Delightful use of ambient noises, very efficient. Said sound reappears to generate more waves of fear in Tortured Sacrament, the last measures of Unrecognizable, and as sinister laughter on the title track Seething Malevolence. The listener feels like the album’s prey, at the mercy of whatever violence the band wants to dish out. What a great through line. The lyrics go in the same direction, with the usual gore and morbid themes one can expect from a brutal death record.
There’s a marked effort on this album to dabble in the old school sound. The tracks are mixed and mastered in a way very reminiscent to the late 80s early 90s when death metal was underground, the scene lived in fanzines, and cassette tapes were traded via post mail with hand drawn band logos on manila envelopes. Even the composition and song structures are old school, though the tuning of the guitars and certain vocal techniques are decidedly modern. A fresh blend of current trends and nostalgia punches that will please fans of the old days. The video for Predatory Savior could not be more obvious in its homage to the 90s with its creepy home video style. The songs pulls no punches as it details how the world we live in today is not safe. How entities in power that are supposed to keep us safe are the same entities ready to ruin us at a moment’s notice. A rather fitting and relevant sentiment nowadays.
