VENDREDI 3 JUIN – JOUR 1

AVERTISSEMENT! Ce texte n’est aucunement objectif. C’est seulement le compte rendu d’une passionnée de punk rock. Un hommage à cet incroyable festival et à notre magnifique communauté punk rock.

Après deux années d’attente, c’est enfin la deuxième édition du RED BRIDGE FEST. Comme son nom l’indique, c’est un festival de musique qui a lieu à Pont-Rouge! Ça fait plus big et les bands américains peuvent le prononcer facilement. Situé dans le parc de l’île Notre-Dame, en bordure de la rivière Jacques-Cartier, c’est un festival sans équivalent dans la région. Un fest exclusivement punk rock, presue intime, avec une capacité d’environ 3500 personnes. Le paradis! J’avais raté la première édition en 2019, il n’était pas question que je manque l’édition de cette année.  Un line up de feu encore une fois. Un mélange parfait de bands internationaux qui ont marqué notre jeunesse et de bands locaux de la relève, qui n’ont rien à envier aux plus gros band (à part peut-être le compte en banque). 

CHASER, NO FUN AT ALL, PULLEY, GUTTERMOUTH, STRUNG OUT
Je compte les dodos depuis plusieurs mois déjà. J’ai pris congé pour l’occasion. Il est 14h30 et je ne tiens plus en place. Mon équipement est prêt, bottes, vestes, imperméables, puncho.  Ils annoncent des averses et des orages pour toute la fin de semaine, mieux vaut être prêt. Il ne reste plus qu’à attendre mes amis et mon chum, qui doit faire du temps supplémentaire. Je ne sais pas quand il pourra venir nous rejoindre. J’espère pour lui qu’il pourra nous rejoindre rapidement, c’est son cadeau de Noël 2019. 

15h, je vois son camion qui entre dans la cour. Il est béni des dieux. Son dernier « call » a été annulé par le client. Le temps d’une douche et on est prêts à partir. Les portes ouvrent à 17h. J’aimerais arriver un peu avant, question de socialiser avant d’être complètement absorbée par tous les shows. Un line up comme celui-ci, ça ne donne pas beaucoup de temps pour jaser. Je devrais croiser quelques personnes, puisque j’ai invité tout le monde que je connais et qu’une grande partie de la communauté de PunkRockRadio.ca sera sur place. Une belle gang de passionnés qui attendent ce moment depuis trop longtemps. On s’est « crinqués » pendant des mois sur les ondes de la radio et c’est maintenant l’heure. 

On réussit à se stationner sans problème, direct devant l’entrée du site. On a de la chance, le soleil est au rendez-vous, le ciel n’est pas menaçant. Je laisse donc tout le stock dans l’auto, les bottes, le puncho. On entre sur le site, rapidement. J’ai un bracelet « staff », mais je ne pense pas en profiter.

D’habitude, une fois entrés sur le site, on se dirige directement aux tentes de « merch » mais cette fois, on a de nouveaux amis à rencontrer. Le lieu de rassemblement par excellence : la tente PunkRockRadio.ca.  Je profite de quelques minutes de « speed talking », avec la petite gang présente avant de me diriger vers la scène. 

Le gros des festivaliers n’est pas encore arrivé sur le site. Moi, je ne veux surtout pas manquer CHASER.

Excellent band de skate punk d’Orange County (Californie). Depuis 2020, je n’entends que des éloges sur ce groupe. Leur dernier album, sorti en 2020 avec le label Thousand Islands Records, est un chef d’œuvre, que des hits. Des mélodies accrocheuses, des refrains qu’on ne peut s’empêcher de fredonner. Le tout accompagné d’un beat rapide et de paroles motivantes. Je me plais à les comparer à Pennywise, un de mes bands préférés depuis 25 ans. Un excellent choix pour ouvrir un fest comme celui-ci.  Le site est encore un peu vide, mais les fans sont à la « gate », prêts à accueillir Mike et son band.

Le son est excellent, pas trop fort. On entend bien les voix, ce qui est primordial pour bien apprécier un band aussi solide, côté harmonies vocales. J’aime chanter avec le band, avec la foule et je ne suis pas déçue. Ils jouent beaucoup de chansons du dernier album. Ils ont du plaisir à être ici.

En excellent frontman, le chanteur, Mike Le Donne, ne se gêne pas pour jaser, inviter les gens à s’approcher de la scène. Il aime le monde et ça paraît. Comme sur les réseaux sociaux, il recherche le contact avec la foule.

Il vient chanter près de nous. Il fait même quelques tentatives de crowdsurfing.

Hits après hits, le spectacle passe trop vite. C’est déjà presque la fin. Je profite intensément de la chanson « See You At the Show », en pensant que c’est la dernière, mais non, ils nous gâtent encore pour quelques minutes avec, entre autres, ma chanson préférée, « Break the Chain », une chanson touchante, avec un refrain inspirant. Quel spectacle! Au-delà de mes attentes! Des musiciens passionnés, des personnes humbles, généreuses qui savent ce que c’est d’être fan et qui sont toujours heureux de passer du temps avec leurs fans.

Ce sont des bands comme eux qui me rendent fière de faire partie de la communauté punk rock.

L’animation entre les groupes est assurée par nul autre que Rej Laplanche, animateur radio à Québec, bien connu des punk rockers pour son émission 123 Punk. Un gars sympathique et un vrai passionné de musique. Il est accompagné de Yannick « Peewee » Tremblay, aussi animateur radio à Québec.

C’est maintenant le temps de nous présenter le deuxième band de la soirée. Et ils sont attendus – NO FUN AT ALL.

Ce soir ils jouent l’album Out of Bounds dans son intégralité. Cette tournée devait avoir lieu en 2020 pour les 25 ans de l’album. Le pit se remplit, rapidement. C’est le band à ne pas manquer, pour beaucoup, dont mon mari.  Encore une fois, le son est impeccable, les instruments, les voix. La foule est bruyante, le party est vraiment pogné.

Les gens boivent et ont du fun. Tout le monde chante en chœur. Bon tous, sauf peut-être moi, j’avoue que je ne connais pas les paroles. J’adore entendre les chœurs, ça me donne toujours des frissons.

Contrairement à CHASER, ce ne sont pas des bêtes de scène. Visuellement, ils sont plutôt discrets, mais on sent le plaisir et l’énergie. Il reste du temps après l’album pour ajouter à leur setlist des incontournables. Ce que j’appelle les « Johnny Quest » d’un band.  Vous savez ce moment où les « tounes » que chaque groupe se DOIT de jouer en show. Pour NO FUN AT ALL, je dirais que c’est « Wow And I Say Wow » et « Catch Me Running Round » qui est toujours le prétexte idéal pour un méga circle pit! Une prestation sans fautes, sans extravagance, mais toujours mémorable. Toujours sur la coche les Suédois! 

PULLEY
Pour mes amis et moi, c’est plutôt le temps d’aller souper. Je connais le band seulement de réputation, je connais une seule chanson et je suis affamée. Il y a deux food trucks juste en face de l’entrée du site. La file est longue mais ça avance assez vite. Le temps s’est couvert, il y a menace de pluie. Cette fois, on n’a pas de chance, la pluie se met à tomber.

Notre seul abri, les arbres près des tables de pique-nique.  Par chance, ça ne dure que quelques minutes, rien pour gâcher nos ardeurs de festivaliers. De retour sur le site, j’ai la chance d’entendre la seule chanson que je connais de PULLEY, « Insects Destroy ».

Je ne suis pas une fan et j’ai raté la moitié de leur performance, mais mes amis fans ont, eux, apprécié la prestation.

GUTTERMOUTH
C’est un band avec un style bien particulier, qui aime choquer, déranger et provoquer. Ils sont réputés pour leurs paroles explicites amenées de façon humoristique et sarcastique. À ne pas prendre au pied de la lettre.

J’ai vraiment l’impression de manquer quelque chose, puisque je ne connais pas du tout les paroles.

Ce n’est pas le genre de band qui m’attire, personnellement, mais dans un festival, ce sont ces bands qui donnent de la couleur à un line up et souvent, aussi, du trouble aux promoteurs. On attend tous de voir ce que le chanteur va faire de bizarre. C’est assez flagrant qu’il est éméché, mais le gars donne un show!

La foule apprécie et embarque à 100%. J’ai l’impression que c’est le spectacle de la soirée où le monde trippe le plus. L’ambiance est folle. En plus, j’ai la chance d’avoir quatre gars en feu devant moi, qui chantent toutes, mais toutes les paroles en chœur. Ça me rend émotive de les écouter et de les voir avoir autant de plaisir. Ça me permet de vivre plus intensément le spectacle, même en étant loin du pit. Merci les boys! Je suis surprise, je ne pensais pas avoir autant de fun à cette prestation! 

STRUNG OUT, dernier band de la soirée et surtout pas le moindre.  Le band préféré de plusieurs de mes amis punkrockers et punkrockeuses. Un band que je n’écoute pas, mais que j’ai vu à plusieurs reprises, live. Un intéressant mélange de punk rock mélodique, de rock progressif et de métal. Un son beaucoup trop complexe pour mes goûts personnels. Lumière éteinte, une petite musique dramatique, ils se font attendre. 22h12, ils font une entrée théâtrale, presque de rockstar!

Ils ont le sens du spectacle. La foule est survoltée. La grande question que tout le monde se pose. Est-ce que le chanteur sera à la hauteur? D’où je suis, j’ai de la misère à bien entendre la voix, mais je donne un 120% pour l’effort. Visuellement, l’intensité et l’émotion y sont. Jason est très généreux avec la foule.

On le voit monter à la barricade à plusieurs reprises.

Belle énergie du band et de la foule. Encore une fois, une prestation à la hauteur des attentes.  

De la musique punk, du soleil, de l’alcool et des amis. Une réussite sur toute la ligne. Et le plus beau, c’est que ça recommence demain.

FRIDAY JUNE 3 – DAY 1

WARNING! This text is in no way objective. It is only the report of a punk rock fan. A tribute to this incredible festival and to our wonderful punk rock community.

After two years of waiting, it’s finally the second edition of the RED BRIDGE FEST. As its name indicates, it’s a music festival that takes place in Pont-Rouge! It sounds bigger and American bands can easily pronounce it. Located in the park of Notre-Dame Island, along the Jacques-Cartier river, it is a festival without equivalent in the region. An exclusively punk rock fest, almost intimate, with a capacity of about 3500 people. A paradise! I had missed the first edition in 2019, there was no way I would miss this year’s edition.  A great line up once again. A perfect mix of international bands that have marked our youth and local bands of the up-and-coming, who have nothing to envy to the biggest bands (except maybe the bank account). 

CHASER, NO FUN AT ALL, PULLEY, GUTTERMOUTH, STRUNG OUT
I’ve been counting the days for several months now. I took time off for the occasion. It’s 2:30 pm and I can’t stand it anymore. My equipment is ready, boots, jackets, raincoats, puncho. They announce showers and thunderstorms for the whole weekend, better be ready. I just have to wait for my friends and my boyfriend, who has to work overtime. I don’t know when he will be able to join us. I hope for him that he can join us soon, it is his Christmas present for 2019. 

3pm, I see his truck entering the yard. He is blessed by the gods. His last « call » was cancelled by the customer. Time for a shower and we’re ready to go. The doors open at 5pm. I would like to arrive a little earlier, to socialize before being completely absorbed by all the shows. A line up like this doesn’t give much time to chat. I should run into a few people, since I invited everyone I know and most of the PunkRockRadio.ca community will be there. A nice gang of enthusiasts who have been waiting for this moment for too long. We’ve been « cringing » for months on the radio and now it’s time. 

We manage to park without problem, directly in front of the entrance of the site. We are lucky, the sun is with the appointment, the sky is not threatening. I thus leave all the stock in the car, boots, puncho. We enter on the site, quickly. I have a bracelet « staff », but I do not think of taking advantage of it.

Usually, once entered on the site, we go directly to the tents of « merch » but this time, we have new friends to meet. The gathering place par excellence: the PunkRockRadio.ca tent. I enjoy a few minutes of « speed talking » with the small gang present before heading to the stage. 

Most of the festival-goers have not yet arrived at the site. I don’t want to miss CHASER. Excellent skate punk band from Orange County (California). Since 2020, I’ve heard nothing but praise for this band. Their last album, released in 2020 with Thousand Islands Records, is a masterpiece, only hits. Catchy melodies, choruses that you can’t help but hum. All accompanied by a fast beat and motivating lyrics. I like to compare them to Pennywise, one of my favorite bands for 25 years. A great choice to open a fest like this.  The site is still a bit empty, but the fans are at the gate, ready to welcome Mike and his band.
The sound is excellent, not too loud. You can hear the voices well, which is essential to appreciate such a solid band, as far as vocal harmonies are concerned. I like to sing along with the band, with the crowd and I’m not disappointed. They play a lot of songs from the last album. They are having fun being here. As a great frontman, the singer, Mike Le Donne, is not shy about chatting, inviting people to come closer to the stage. He loves the world and it shows. Like on social networks, he seeks contact with the crowd. He comes to sing near us. He even makes a few attempts at crowdsurfing. Hits after hits, the show passes too quickly. It is already almost the end. I enjoy intensely the song « See You At the Show », thinking it’s the last one, but no, they spoil us for a few more minutes with, among others, my favorite song, « Break the Chain », a touching song, with an inspiring chorus. What a show! Beyond my expectations! Passionate musicians, humble, generous people who know what it is to be a fan and are always happy to spend time with their fans. It’s bands like these that make me proud to be part of the punk rock community.

The entertainment between bands is provided by none other than Rej Laplanche, a radio host in Quebec City, well known to punk rockers for his show 123 Punk. A nice guy and a real music lover. He is accompanied by Yannick « Peewee » Tremblay, also a radio host in Quebec City.
 
Now it’s time to introduce the second band of the evening. And they are expected – NO FUN AT ALL. Tonight they play the album Out of Bounds in its entirety. This tour was supposed to take place in 2020 for the 25th anniversary of the album. The pit fills up quickly. This is the band not to be missed, for many, including my husband. Once again, the sound is impeccable, the instruments, the voices. The crowd is loud, the party is really packed. People are drinking and having fun. Everyone sings in chorus. Well, everyone, except maybe me, I confess I don’t know the words. I love hearing the chorus, it always gives me chills. Unlike CHASER, they are not stage animals. Visually, they are rather discreet, but you can feel the pleasure and the energy. There’s still time after the album to add to their setlist of must-haves. What I call the « Johnny Quest » of a band.  You know that moment when the « tunes » that every band MUST play in a show. For NO FUN AT ALL, I would say that it’s « Wow And I Say Wow » and « Catch Me Running Round » which is always the perfect excuse for a mega circle pit! A flawless performance, without extravagance, but always memorable. The Swedes are always on the ball! 

PULLEY
For my friends and I, it’s more like dinner time. I only know the band by reputation, I only know one song and I’m starving. There are two food trucks right in front of the entrance of the site. The line is long but it moves pretty fast. The weather is overcast, there is threat of rain. This time, we are not lucky, the rain begins to fall. Our only shelter, the trees near the tables of picnic.  By chance, that lasts only some minutes, nothing to spoil our ardors of festival-goers. Back on the site, I have the chance to hear the only song I know from PULLEY, « Insects Destroy ». I’m not a fan and I missed half of their performance, but my fellow fans enjoyed the show.

GUTTERMOUTH
This is a band with a very particular style, which likes to shock, disturb and provoke. They are known for their explicit lyrics brought in a humorous and sarcastic way. Not to be taken literally. I really feel like I’m missing something, since I don’t know the lyrics at all. This is not the kind of band that attracts me, personally, but in a festival, these are the bands that give color to a line up and often, also, trouble to the promoters. We’re all waiting to see what the singer will do that’s weird. It’s pretty obvious that he’s tipsy, but the guy puts on a show!
The crowd enjoys it and gets on board 100%. I feel like this is the show of the night where people are tripping the most. The atmosphere is crazy. Plus, I’m lucky enough to have four guys on fire in front of me, singing all the words in chorus. It makes me emotional to listen to them and to see them having so much fun. It allows me to experience the show more intensely, even when I’m far from the pit. Thanks boys! I’m surprised, I didn’t think I would have so much fun at this show! 

STRUNG OUT, the last band of the night and not the least. The favorite band of many of my punk rocker friends. A band that I don’t listen to, but that I’ve seen many times, live. An interesting mix of melodic punk rock, progressive rock and metal. A sound far too complex for my personal taste. Lights out, a little dramatic music, they make themselves wait. Finally at 10:12pm, they make a theatrical entrance, almost like rockstars! They have a sense of showmanship. The crowd is overexcited. The big question on everyone’s mind. Will the singer be up to it? From where I’m standing, I have a hard time hearing the voice, but I give a 120% for the effort. Visually, the intensity and emotion are there. Jason is very generous with the crowd. We see him going to the barricade several times. Great energy from the band and the crowd. Once again, a performance that lived up to expectations.  

Punk music, sun, alcohol and friends. A success on all the line. And the best part is that it’s happening again tomorrow.
