Une autre belle surprise vient de tomber dans mes courriels! Cette surprise c’est le groupe français DJIIN (et non pas Djinn) qui, après deux albums live et l’album The Freak, nous a tissé une belle trame musicale pleine d’ambiance intitulée Meandering Soul. Et ça commence par une couverture sortie tout droit d’un rêve psychédélique digne d’un trip de substances illicite, qui donne le ton à la musique qu’elle enveloppe. De toute évidence, nos cousins d’outreAtlantique ont décidé de passer à l’offensive, et ça fait plaisir à mes oreilles.
Après les premières notes lentes de « Black Circus », « wow » est ma première exclamation. Ça commence très bien. On est en plein dans une atmosphère enfumée à la « Dazed & Confused », aromatisée au stoner rock et au doom. Cette pièce repose sur la basse, qui sonne comme elle sonnait dans les années 1970. Un hors-d’œuvre délicieux, qui nous met l’eau à la bouche pour le reste. « The Void » revêt une sonorité plus légère, à la limite du prog, avec deux voix, et se transforme en rock psychédélique et fuzzé à la puissance mille. Ici je souligne, étant donné qu’on l’entend davantage, que les autres musiciens participent aux voix et que les harmonies sont subtiles.
C’est « Red Desert » qui me fait le plus penser à Led Zep, on ne peut pas le nier, avec une intro de batterie sèche, une voix ressemblant à celle d’Alison Mosshart (The Kills, The Dead Weather) et un second mouvement instrumental complétant cette longue pièce de huit minutes (pas la seule!). Malgré son titre, « Warmth of Death » nous offre une belle intro a cappella. Au début je me disais que c’était la pièce la plus accessible, qui pourrait être radiophonique malgré sa longueur… mais finalement, non, elle n’est pas si simple que ça, et il faut une oreille aiguisée pour savoir l’apprécier. « White Valley » suit le courant, au point où je ne remarque pratiquement pas qu’elle joue. Estelle trop courte? Ou bien un peu trop ordinaire dans le sens où elle se fond dans le décor, malgré les cris de rage ou de détresse à la fin? Mystère…
Enfin, « Waxdoll » a la particularité de commencer par quelques mots en allemand et cette pièce nous offre aussi une envolée partiellement instrumentale assez trippante, très prometteuse sur scène, en live. D’ailleurs, ce sera intéressant de voir la harpe à l’œuvre car, bien honnêtement, je ne la distingue pas sur l’album, peut-être parce qu’elle est électrique et sonne pratiquement comme une guitare.
Finalement, je ne peux même pas dire que c’est un bel effort, non, c’est plus que ça. Parce qu’on sait, on entend que DJIIN sont des musiciens d’expérience et que le produit est à la hauteur. Alors je dirai que Meandering Soul est une réussite sur toute la ligne. Merci les Français!

Well I’ve just received another nice surprise in my inbox! And that surprise is French band DJIIN (not Djinn) who, after two live releases and the album The Freak, has cooked up a very nice recipe full of feeling called Meandering Soul. It starts with the cover, straight out of a psychedelic dream fueled by an illicit trip, setting the tone of the music it’s wrapping up. Obviously, my cousins from across the pond have decided to strike, and it’s – well, music to my ears.
After the first slow notes from “Black Circus”, “wow” is the first word that comes out of my mouth. It is a very good start. We’re deep into a smoky atmosphere à la “Dazed & Confused”, smelling of stoner rock and doom. This track is based on the bass guitar and it sounds just like it did in the 1970s. A savoury, mouth-watering hors-d’œuvre, giving us a good taste of what’s to come. “The Void” offers a lighter sound, akin to prog rock, with two voices, and turns into fully fuzzed psychedelic rock. It’s here that I have to mention that, since it can be heard, the other members of the band are also doing back vocals, and that the harmonies are quite subtle.
“Red Desert” is the track that reminds me the most of Led Zep, it’s can’t be denied, with a “dry” drum intro, vocals making me think of Alison Mosshart (The Kills, The Dead Weather) and a second instrumental movement completing this long, eight minute track (not the only one!). Despite its title, “Warmth of Death” offers a nice a cappella introduction. At first I thought it was the most accessible track, even radio friendly despite its length but… no, it’s not as simple – one has to have a trained ear to be able to appreciate it. “White Valley” follows suit, but I don’t really notice that’s it’s playing. Is it too short? Or maybe a little too middle-of-the-road in the sense that it blends in with the rest, despite the cries of rage or distress in the end? I still don’t know.
Finally, “Waxdoll” is introduced with a few words in German and this track also offers a quite trippy instrumental segment, very promising as to how it will sound live. On that note, it will be interesting to see what the harp can do on stage because, honestly, I can’t seem to notice it on the album, maybe because it’s electric and it sounds almost the same as a guitar.
In the end, I can’t even say it’s a good effort – no, it’s more than that. Because we know, we can hear that DJIIN are experienced musicians and the result is up to par. So I will say that’s Meandering Soul is a hit!
