Après avoir lancé son percutant single « Holy Roller » en 2020, le groupe, formé de trois anciens de la scène metal qui avaient seulement lancé des singles et des EP jusqu’à présent, était prêt à passer à l’étape suivante. Sans véritable album ni tournée, SPIRITBOX a réussi à cumuler 66 millions d’écoutes et était maintenant prêt à lancer Eternal Blue, avec les singles « Holy Roller », « Blessed Be » et « Constance », qui ont déjà envahi Internet. « Holy Roller » a même atteinte la première position sur Sirius XM et « Blessed Be » a atteint la 15e position du palmarès hard rock du Billboard. D’après Courtney LaPlante, cet album a été en chantier pendant plus longtemps qu’existe le groupe, et il a été imaginé comme la montagne russe d’émotions et d’expérimentation qu’il est. Leur succès grandissant a favorisé la collaboration de RYO Kinoshita (CRYSTAL LAKE) et de SAM CARTER (ARCHITECTS).
Avant de passer à l’appréciation des titres un par un, je vais vous donner mon impression générale de l’album : Eternal Blue est définitivement une de leurs œuvres les plus solides jusqu’à présent, et il n’y a aucune pièce moins bonne qu’une autre sur cet album. Bien qu’il soit d’une nature expérimentale l’amenant à toucher à divers genre, tout auditeur ouvert d’esprit trouvera de quoi d’excellent dans chaque pièce. D’ailleurs, fort d’une liste de 12 pièces, l’album nous laisse comblés, après avoir passé par des riffs brutaux et des breakdowns, des cris gutturaux et des voix clean, des sonorités acoustiques et électriques et même électroniques. Malgré que SPIRITBOX soit reconnu pour la voix incroyable de sa chanteuse, chaque sonorité de l’album complète parfaitement les autres instruments pour traduire les émotions et le mood voulus. La seule critique que je pourrais exprimer, c’est que le mixing et la production ne rendent pas tout à fait justice aux pièces plus moody comme « Secret Garden » et « Eternal Blue », la basse occultant les sons plus nets comme les cordes et la voix clean. À l’inverse, ce mixing est parfait pour ressentir adéquatement les pièces qui frappent fort comme « Holly Roler » et « Halcyon ». Je vous supplie donc d’écouter mon conseil : oubliez la radio dans l’auto et profitez de ce voyage musical avec votre meilleur casque d’écoute. Les singles ne sont que des apéritifs prometteurs pour ce qui est de l’album au complet.
Sunkiller
La piste d’ouverture débute sur un son inquiétant rappelant un film d’horreur qui anticipe un premier couplet enchantant accompagné d’une chorale lugubre. Après cette ouverture rappelant Evanescence, la piste décolle progressivement. Le bridge explore brillamment le son du début en incorporant un aspect industriel/progressif pour ensuite clore magnifiquement sur le son plus agressif du genre. Bref, exactement ce à quoi s’attendre pour une piste d’ouverture d’un album prog-core.
Hurt You
Une chanson plus metalcore que les autres, avec la classique suite instruments saccadés, couplet planant crié et refrain plus rock. Cette chanson serait la plus ordinaire sans son bridge et sa fin qui amènent une brillante variation, quoique simple, du reste de la mélodie et qui franchement donnent le goût de se défouler. En résumé, rien de spécial de la part de Spiritbox mais une bonne chanson metalcore en général.
Yellowjacket
La piste tant attendue, la seule avec un invité sur l’album, ne déçoit pas. Incorporant encore plus que sur « Sunkiller » des éléments électroniques. La longue intro est un brillant mélange du style connu d’Architects et la touche expérimentale de Spiritbox, et le reste est une concoction envoûtante des deux styles qui se complimentent bien; le côté accrocheur d’Architects et le côté occulte et en perpétuelle motion de Spiritbox. Et contrairement à la coutume de donner qu’un couplet à l’invité, Courtney LaPlante reste fidèle à ses paroles en entrevue et laisse la chanson au complet à deux chanteurs. Le mélange vocal et instrumental est un incontournable.
The Summit
Une de mes favorites de l’album, celle-ci est très atmosphérique, comme flotter sur l’océan (peut-être un lien avec le nom de l’album…). De toute évidence inspirée du folk metal par les cordes plus acoustiques et la voix plus langoureuse presque murmurée, la chanson est encore une démonstration de la polyvalence du groupe. Le tout crée une lamentation féerique dans laquelle il est agréable de s’abandonner.
Secret Garden
Comme la précédente une chanson atmosphérique, mais instrumentalement plus intense dès le début. Le rythme de la batterie est parfaitement agencé avec le brillant jeu de cordes qui crée un son envoûtant. Le refrain chanté en clean est le plus mémorable de l’album et la fin est encore un agencement inusité de mélodies, sons et backvocals, ce que le groupe fait de mieux.
Silk in the Strings
Une courte chanson, intense du début à la fin – un autre coup de cœur, celui-ci incorporant un son inquiétant et des voix derrière tous les instruments et les profonds screams. Le titre est trompeur car la pièce entière est une agression sans pause avec des riffs issus directement du prog-core moderne qu’on connaît bien.
Holy Roller
Le single clé que tout fan de metal devrait avoir entendu déjà suit la chanson la plus brutale et garde la tendance. Ajoutant des voix cybernétiques et des drums ensorcelants, la piste prend une ambiance d’horreur futuriste. Quoique courte, l’œuvre critiquant le fanatisme chrétien est complète et remplie de breakdowns. Malgré tout, je trouve que c’est un drôle de choix de ne pas mettre la version avec RYO Kinoshita sur l’album. Peut-être est-ce une question de droits ou simplement la fierté de mettre son single à succès original à l’avant?
Eternal Blue
Probablement la meilleure de l’album, la piste éponyme incorpore un son orchestral par-dessus pour ajouter au voyage que la chanson amène. Quoique chantée en clean, le bridge et les instruments ne dérogent pas du prog-core que Spiritbox crée si bien, créant une chanson pouvant attirer un encore plus large spectre d’auditeurs. Malheureusement, comme mentionné au début c’est « Eternal Blue » qui écope le plus de la production quand les sons plus pointus sont étouffés par le bass drum et la basse, mais je ne suis pas un ingénieur audio, donc c’est peut-être réglable ou même voulu.
We Live in a Strange World
Ici vient la surprise de l’album : une piste de pop rock expérimentale avec des sons électroniques envoûtants et emplis d’échos sous-marins. En crescendo tout le long, allant de sons synthétisés jusqu’aux instruments classiques tout en gardant la même structure et mélodie, la pièce expérimente de façon intéressante, mais n’est pas pour les fans du plus heavy.
Halcyon
Je n’ai qu’une chose à dire sur Halcyon, le riff principal est incroyable et bien accompagné par tous les autres sons inusités et les deux types de chant, créant une autre chanson coup de cœur.
Circle With Me
Un autre des singles est en tête de file pour la course à la meilleure chanson de l’album. De l’ouverture choc, du crescendo partant du couplet, au refrain fantomatique accrocheur jusqu’à la fin trépidante bien screamée, la guitare planante et les instruments épiques créent un chef-d’œuvre.
Constance
L’autre single ayant envoûté Internet clôt l’album parfaitement par son thème touchant et son ambiance planante, même flottante. Remplie de hauts et bas, il y a presque même des silences entre des changements mélodiques, ajoutant à la facette dramatique de « Constance ». La fin instrumentale en decrescendo marque bien la fin du périple d’Eternal Blue et nous laisse satisfait du voyage grâce au rappel de quelques sons récurrents de l’album.
En résumé, cet album est le magnum opus de SPIRITBOX et je conseille sans réserve à tout fan de metal ou hard rock en général de se le procurer à sa sortie le 17 septembre.

After the release of their breakthrough single “Holy Roller” in 2020, this band of three veterans of the metal scene – having until then only released singles and EPs – was ready to take the next step. Without an actual album nor having toured, they managed to reach 66 million streams and are now ready to release Eternal Blue, with the singles “Holy Roller”, “Blessed Be” and “Constance” that took the Internet by storm. “Holy Roller” even reached #1 on Sirius XM and “Blessed Be” reached #15 on Billboard’s Hard Rock chart. From the words of Courtney LaPlante, this album has been in the works for much longer than the existence of the band and is meant to be the rollercoaster of emotions and experimentation that it is. Their rising success brought in the collaboration of RYO Kinoshita from CRYSTAL LAKE and SAM CARTER from ARCHITECTS. Before getting to the track-by-track, I’ll give my general impression of the album. It definitely is their most solid work yet, and there is no such thing as a weaker track on the album, and albeit the experimental nature makes it wander through various genres, any open-minded listener will find something great in every track. With a classic 12-track listing, the album leaves you fullfilled, after a journey through brutal riffs and breakdowns, from gutturals to cleans and acoustics to electric or even electronic. Despite SPIRITBOX being renowned for their singer’s incredible vocals, every sound in the album complements the other instruments perfectly to convey the intended emotions and mood. The only critique I can come up with is that I feel the mixing and production do not give justice to more moody songs such as « Secret Garden » and “Eternal Blue”, the bass obscuring the sharper sounds such as strings and clean vocals. On the other hand this mixing is perfect to feel properly the heavy-hitting songs like “Holy Roller” and “Halcyon”. Hence, I urge you to heed my advice; forget the car radio and enjoy this musical journey in your best headphones. The singles are just a tease from what the full album offers.
Sunkiller
The opening track starts with a disturbing sound reminiscent of a horror movie, anticipating an enchanting first verse coupled with a dreadful choir. After this Evanescence-like opening, the track slowly takes off. The bridge brilliantly explores the sound from the beginning by adding an industrial/progressive feel, only to close with magnificence, with the most aggressive sound of the genre. In short, it’s exactly what’s to be expected from the opening track of a prog-core album.
Hurt You
A track that’s more on the metalcore side than the others, with the typical series of staggered instruments, high flying and yelling verse, and rock chorus. This track could be a bland one if it were not for the bridge and the ending offering a brilliant variation, although simple, of the rest of the melody and that, honestly, make you want to let off steam. In summary, a not-so-special track from SPIRITBOX but still a good metalcore song in general.
Yellowjacket
The track everyone is waiting for, the only one with a guest, is not disappointing. Incorporating even more electronic sounds than on “Sunkiller”. The long intro is a brilliant mix of Architects’ renowned style and Spiritbox’s experimental touch, and the rest is a mesmerizing cocktail of the two styles that complement each other: Architects’ hooks and Spiritbox’s occult style in perpetual motion. And, contrary to the usual way of just leaving a verse to the guest, Courtney LaPlante is true to her word during interviews and leaves the entire song to two singers. The vocal and instrumental mix cannot be ignored.
The Summit
One of my favorites, this track is very ambient, giving the impression of floating on the ocean (maybe a nod to the album’s title?). Obviously inspired by folk metal because of the acoustic strings and more languorous vocals, almost to a whisper, this track is once again a demonstration of the band’s versatility. Altogether, this creates an enchanting lament to which it feels good to succumb.
Secret Garden
Ambient like the previous track, this one is instrumentally more intense right from the start. The drum beat matches the brilliant guitars perfectly, creating a mesmerizing sound. The clean chorus is the most memorable of the album, and the ending is once again an uncommon arrangement of melodies, sounds and backvocals, which is what Spiritbox does best.
Silk in the Strings
A short track, intense from start to finish, another favorite of mine, this one incorporating frightening sounds and vocals backing all the instruments with deep screams. The title is a misnomer because the entire song is a non-stop aggression with riffs taken right from the modern prog-core we all know so well.
Holy Roller
The key single that every metal fan should have already heard follows the most brutal track and follows suit. With the addition of cybernetic vocals and bewitching drums, the track has a futuristic horror feel. Although short, this song criticizing Christian fanaticism is complete and full of breakdowns. However, I find it odd to not have included the version with RYO Kinoshita on the album. Is it a question of copyright or the mere pride of putting the original single at the forefront?
Eternal Blue
Probably the best song on the album, this eponymous track adds an orchestral layer to the journey. Despite the use of clean vocals, the bridge and the instruments keep up with the progcore that Spiritbox creates so well, all into a song with the potential of attracting even more various listeners. Unfortunately, as I said, « Eternal Blue » is the most affected the production when the sharper sounds are muffled by the bass drum and the bass, but, as I’m not an audio technician, maybe it’s adjustable or even on purpose.
We Live in a Strange World
Surprise! Here comes an experimental pop rock track with bewitching electronic sounds and full of underwater echoes. From synthesizers to classical instruments, all in crescendo, while keeping the same structure and melody, this exploratory song is interesting but not for those who like heavier stuff.
Halcyon
I have only one thing to say about “Halcyon”, and it’s that the main riff is incredible and well supported by all the unusual sounds and the two types of singing, all towards another favorite of mine.
Circle With Me
This track is another contender on the list for best song. From the stunning opening to the crescendo and the spectral and catchy chorus, until the well-screamed pulsating ending, the soaring guitar and the epic sounds make it a masterpiece.
Constance
The other single that took the Internet by storm here marks the end of the album in a perfect way, with its touching subject and its soaring, floating, ambiance. With plenty of highs and lows and even some silences in between melodies, this adds to the dramatic feel of “Constance”. The instrumental ending, as a decrescendo, marks in effect the ending of the journey through Eternal Blue and leaves the traveler satisfied, thanks to a reminder of some of the sounds throughout the album.
In summary, Eternal Blue is SPIRITBOX’s magnum opus and I recommend that any metal or hard rock fan in general buy it as soon as it’s released tomorrow.
