AUTHORITY ZERO + BELVEDERE + URETHANE + MELONBALL + LENNY LASHLEY | FESTIVAL ENVOL ET MACADAM | QUÉBEC | 12.09.2024

Je ne me suis pas encore tout à fait remise de mes émotions du spectacle de samedi passé (PERKELE + THE PROWLERS + THE SCATTY CAP BRATS) et c’est déjà le temps de couvrir un festival de trois jours, ENVOL ET MACADAM. C’est, à mon avis, le seul remède efficace à la dépression post-spectacle, très répandue chez les passionnés. Cette année pour la 27e édition ENVOL ET MACADAM présente une programmation variée et originale. Des groupes qui nous rendent visite pour la première fois et d’autres dont on s’ennuie.

La scène principale est située à L’AGORA DU VIEUX-PORT. Il y a aussi une panoplie de spectacles de tous les styles, dans plusieurs salles de la ville de Québec, comme le SCANNER, le QUARTIER DE LUNE, et la SALLE MONTAIGNE (Campus Charlesbourg).

Après m’être fait saigner les oreilles avec de la pop et de l’électro pendant toute la journée au travail, j’ai besoin d’une thérapie réparatrice. J’ai besoin de faire le plein de punk rock gras et rapide. Je me rends donc pour 18h à LA SOURCE DE LA MARTINIÈRE, pour le lancement du festival et une soirée mélodique punk rock bien méritée.

Les spectacles de ce soir lancent la tournée canadienne de BELVEDERE et D’AUTHORITY ZERO.  

LENNY LASHLEY
La soirée commence en douceur, avec une prestation acoustique de Lenny Lashley.

Une voix, une guitare acoustique et pour ajouter à la vibe mélancolique, une pedal steel guitar. Un son que j’associe principalement au country. Ce n’est pas ma tasse de thé, mais je suis curieuse.

Une petite poignée de curieux, comme moi, sont aussi présents dans la salle.

Par contre, la majorité des festivaliers arrivés tôt profitent du beau temps à l’extérieur pour socialiser, prendre un petit breuvage entre amis sur la terrasse.  

MELONBALL
Première visite de ce band de melodic punk qui nous vient d’Allemagne! Ils ont sorti leur premier album en 2023 avec THOUSAND ISLAND RECORDS (USA/UK).

Je n’ai entendu que du bien sur ce groupe, mais pas encore leur musique. Je m’attends à quelque chose de rapide et mélodique et je ne suis pas déçue.

J’ai de la difficulté à entendre les guitares lors des premières chansons, mais ça s’améliore ensuite et j’aime vraiment beaucoup. On entend bien les voix et c’est ce que je préfère! La chanteuse est extrêmement talentueuse, j’adore! Une voix claire et puissante. Le genre de voix qui me donne des frissons.    

URETHANE
Band de melodic hardcore de San Diego qui met en vedette Steve Caballero, une légende du monde du skateboard.

La salle s’est remplie et la foule est prête à se déchaîner. C’est vraiment une réussite comme soirée! Il y a du monde partout.    

BELVEDERE
Ils sont très appréciés des punks de Québec, je les ai souvent vus et c’est toujours plein. De fait, la salle est pleine, ils ne font plus entrer personne. Une grosse déception pour plusieurs festivaliers qui s‘en plaignent en ligne. Je comprends le sentiment, mais impossible de faire autrement. Les salles pouvant accueillir des bands de ce niveau de popularité manquent à Québec. Beaucoup de passeports du festival ont été vendus et des billets ont aussi été vendus spécialement pour les spectacles en salle. 

Le punk rock de BELVEDERE est rapide et très technique, un cocktail parfait pour un show. Ils sont le fun à regarder autant qu’à écouter.

Par contre, je n’ose pas trop m’avancer, je reste près de la porte et regarde la foule avoir du plaisir, chanter.

AUTHORITY ZERO
Le dernier band est très attendu aussi – AUTHORITY ZERO. Un des groupes favoris de plusieurs de mes amis. Je n’ai jamais pris le temps de découvrir mais je les ai déjà vus en spectacle, ici même avec IGNITE (qui se produiront d’ailleurs demain à l’after à L’ANTI), il y a quelques années et j’ai adoré.

Quelle performance du chanteur Jason DeVore. Quelle belle énergie ! On a l’impression d’être 2000 devant lui.

Il a un talent fou pour faire tripper et participer la foule. Il joue son rôle de frontman à la perfection et quelle voix!

Mon coup de cœur de la soirée.  

C’est ce qui me plaît des festivals variés comme ENVOL ET MACADAM, il y a toujours un ou plusieurs groupes sur lesquels on accroche et qu’on aurait peut-être pas pris la peine de découvrir autrement. 

Pour ceux qui ont encore de l’énergie, le party continue à L’ANTI, avec LA JARRY, QUEST KON FUSE, JUGHEAD’S REVENGE. Pour moi, ce sera tout pour ce soir, j’ai malheureusement une vie et je travaille le lendemain!

I’m still recovering from the emotions of last Saturday’s show, and it’s already time to cover the 3-day Envol et Macadam fest. It’s the only effective remedy for post-show depression, which is very common among enthusiasts. This year, for its 27th edition, Envol et Macadam presents a diverse and original program. Some bands are visiting for the first time, and others that will be there have been missed.

The main stage is located at the Agora du Vieux-Port. There’s also plenty of shows of all styles, in several Quebec City venues, including the Scanner, the Quartier de Lune and the Campus Charlesbourg.

After having suffered through pop and electro all day at work, I need some restorative therapy. I need to fill up on fast, greasy punk rock. So I’m off to the Source de la Martinière at 6pm, for the kick-off party of the fest and a well-deserved evening of melodic punk rock.

Tonight’s shows kick off BELVEDERE and AUTHORITY ZERO‘s Canadian tour.  

LENNY LASHLEY
The evening starts off gently, with an acoustic performance by Lenny Lashley. One voice, one acoustic guitar and, to add to the melancholy vibe, one pedal steel guitar. A sound I associate mainly with country music. It’s not my cup of tea, but I’m curious. A small handful of curious onlookers, like myself, are also present. On the other hand, the majority of festival-goers who arrived early are enjoying the fine weather outside and socializing and having a drink with friends on the terrace.  

MELONBALL
First visit on Canadian soil for this melodic punk band from Germany! They released their first album in 2023 with Thousand Island Records (USA/UK). I’ve heard nothing but good things about this band, but I’ve yet to hear their music. I’m expecting something fast and melodic, and I’m not disappointed.

I have trouble hearing the guitars in the first few songs, but then it gets better and I really like it. You can hear the vocals and that’s what I like best! The singer is extremely talented, I love it! A clear, powerful voice. The kind of voice that gives me chills.    

URETHANE
Hardcore melodic band from San Diego, featuring skateboarding legend Steve Caballero. The room fills up and the crowd is ready to go wild. It’s a really successful evening! There are people everywhere. 

BELVEDERE
The band is a solid favorite among Quebec City punks. I’ve seen them many times, and it’s always packed. The venue is full, and they don’t let any more in. A big disappointment for many festival-goers, who complain about it online. I understand the feeling, but it’s impossible to do otherwise. Quebec City lacks venues that can accommodate bands of this level of popularity. A lot of fest passports have been sold and special tickets have also been sol for indoor shows. 

The band’s fast, highly technical punk rock is the perfect cocktail for a show. They’re as much fun to watch as they are to listen to. On the other hand, I don’t dare get too far ahead, so I stay close to the door and watch the crowd having fun, singing along and crowd surfing. 

AUTHORITY ZERO
The latest band is also eagerly awaited – AUTHORITY ZERO. One of my friends’ favorite bands. I’ve never taken the time to know about them, but I’ve already seen them live, right here with IGNITE (who will be performing at tomorrow’s after-party at L’ANTI), a few years ago, and I loved it. What a performance from singer Jason DeVore. What great energy! It feels like there’s 2000 people in front of him. He’s got a mad talent for getting the crowd going and participating. He plays his role of frontman to perfection, and what a voice!

My favorite of the evening.  

That’s what I like about festivals like ENVOL AND MACADAM: there’s always one or more bands that you’re hooked on that you might not otherwise have bothered to find more about. 

For those who still have some energy left, the party continues at L’ANTI, with LA JARRY, QUEST KON FUSE and JUGHEAD’S REVENGE. But for me, that’s it for tonight – unfortunately, I have a life and I have to work tomorrow!
