PERKELE + THE PROWLERS + THE SCALLY CAP BRATS | L’ANTI | 07.09.2024

Un autre rêve qui se réalise! Dans quelques heures, j’aurai enfin la chance d’accueillir dans ma ville, un de mes groupes préférés de tous les temps, PERKELE. Band punk rock/Oi suédois avec une forte influence metal. En 2017, j’ai eu un véritable coup de foudre dès les premières secondes d’écoute de leur album Fran Flykt Till Kamp (1998). Avec ASTA KASK, ils m’ont fait découvrir la « vraie » scène punk suédoise et aujourd’hui, je n’écoute plus que ça. 

Comme après huit ans d’attente et de supplication, mes vœux n’avaient toujours pas été exaucés, je suis allée les voir en Suède, en mai dernier. C’est donc mon deuxième show, mais cette fois, à la maison, et dans ma salle préférée, L’Anti Bar et Spectacles.

Et quand je vous dis que c’est une chance, un rêve pour moi, c’est qu’il y a aussi THE PROWLERS qui joue ce soir!! Un band Oi de Montréal que j’adore. Un autre de mes bands préférés, et un des meilleurs band live que je connaisse. Ils fêtent leurs 25 ans cette année et c’est un honneur de les accueillir à Québec!

THE SCALLY CAP BRATS
Tout d’abord, on accueille un groupe de celtic punk d’Ottawa, THE SCALLY CAP BRATS.  Le spectacle débute à 20h15. Quand on dit celtic punk on pense tout de suite à DROPKICK MURPHYS. On sent les influences, mais les BRATS ont un son plus pesant et plus brut, qui me plaît beaucoup.

Comme instrument « celtique », une mandoline qui apporte un petit côté festif, contrastant bien avec le son punk, Oi plus lourd. Ça sonne comme une tonne de briques, vraiment excellent!

Le duo de Mike et Mike au chant me plaît beaucoup. Et ça ne prend que quelques chansons pour capter l’attention de la salle. La foule s’avance près de la scène. Je pense que personne ne s’attendait à être attiré comme ça. Même mon mari, qui est très difficile côté première partie ne cesse de me dire « c’est bon, j’aime ça! ». 

Ils font l’unanimité parmi la foule de L’ANTI ce soir!! Après leur set on entend partout les gens dire « heille c’était bon le premier band, je ne connaissais pas… ».

Bravo et merci pour cette solide performance, une belle découverte.  

THE PROWLERS
Un peu passé 21h c’est le tour de THE PROWLERS d’entrer sur scène. Un des groupes que j’ai vu le plus souvent en show et je ne me tanne jamais. À mon avis, c’est ce qui se fait de mieux dans le style (Oi).  

Des chansons fortes, aux refrains catchy qui se chantent à l’unisson. D’où l’intérêt de les voir en spectacle. Je peux chanter et lever le poing dans ma chambre, mais ça n’a pas du tout le même effet.

Toutes leurs chansons ont cette énergie brute et authentique du punk rock et cette touche de mélodique du Oi. Mes préférées sont « Taking Back The Pubs », « Hate Us », « Spread Your Bed » et bien sûr, la meilleure live, « Drunken Skinhead »!

Comme d’habitude la dernière chanson m’apporte une petite tristesse. Ça fait des mois que j’attends ça et c’est déjà terminé. Ça passe toujours trop vite. 

Je garde en souvenir « l’assiette-list » utilisée par Eric, le guitariste. C’est original, comme item de collection. Et on peut même s’en servir comme d’un éventail lorsqu’on a trop chaud, et il fait extrêmement chaud ce soir à l’Anti!

PERKELE
Avant que le spectacle commence, je prends un petit moment de réflexion pour réaliser ma chance et bien me concentrer sur le moment présent. Je les ai déjà vus, mais sur une trop grosse scène. L’ANTI, c’est chaleureux, intime et crissement punk rock!   

PERKELE c’est plus qu’un band punk Oi aux influences metal, c’est un shoot de bonheur! Il y a dans leur son, quelque chose d’indéfinissable qui me réconforte, quand je ne sais même pas que j’en avais besoin. Un feel good band, qui avec leur musique et leurs textes, simples et positifs, me donne l’énergie et la motivation pour affronter les coups durs de la vie. Chaque album a un son et une ambiance particulière. 

Le groupe commence sa prestation peu après 22h avec cinq chefs-d’œuvre de suite, « Me », « One Day », « Paradise », « A Way Out » et « What Have I Done ». Ils n’ont rien que ça, de toute façon. Dès les premières notes, je pars dans mon monde où je suis seule avec le band. Avec un peu d’imagination, j’arrive à faire abstraction de la présence de plus d’une centaine de punks et de skins tout autour de moi. Je reviens vite à la réalité, mais ça fait tellement du bien.   

Quel son incroyable! Des riffs de guitare de « What Have I Done » au refrain « sing along » de « Stories From the Past », tout est parfait! Le son est fort, mais ce n’est pas agressant, juste poignant. Je le dis toujours et je vais me répéter, L’ANTI, c’est l’endroit idéal niveau son. Toujours clair et puissant, mais jamais assourdissant. Je laisse mes bouchons dans l’auto. 

Je choisis de rester en avant. En bout de scène, un peu sur les côtés, je bénéficie d’une vue d’ensemble, d’une proximité avec les musiciens et aussi d’une protection contre les coups. Je profite du spectacle sans avoir peur de manger un coup de pied dans la face. 

On sent l’émotion dans la foule lorsque tous chantent en chœur les refrains. On vit tous quelque chose de spécial, ce soir. Je n’étais évidemment pas la seule qui attendait ce moment depuis longtemps et je suis convaincue que le band le ressent.  

Il y a une belle foule, très énergique et engagée qui réchauffe la place comme jamais. Parlez-en à Jouni, le drummer. Il sue tellement qu’il semble porter un « wetsuit » au lieu d’un T-shirt.

Faut dire qu’il n’a pas souvent de pause. Ils jouent chanson après chanson après chanson. C’est d’ailleurs une autre de leur qualité live. Ils ne perdent pas de temps en jasage et autres niaiseries. Quelques timides et sincères remerciements, mais pour eux, c’est la musique avant tout!  Une heure, c’est si vite passé. 

Même avec une discographie aussi extraordinaire, j’ai, comme beaucoup de fans, une chanson préférée ultime. C’est souvent la première chanson qui nous a accroché. La mienne, c’est “Det Va Då” (339 écoutes, juste sur Spotify depuis février 2017), qui à l’origine, est chantée en suédois. J’ai d’ailleurs commencé à chanter en suédois sur cette chanson. Ils ont aussi une version anglaise, « Back in Time”, que j’aime aussi, mais pour moi, cette chanson, elle est suédoise. En Suède, ils l’ont fait en suédois et ce soir, j’ai un mince espoir, mais on ne sait jamais! Mon espoir s’évanouit dès les premières paroles : « Back in time… » au lieu de « Det va då… ». Déçue? Pas vraiment, il n’y a rien pour me décevoir aujourd’hui. Mon mari, par contre, a l’air triste de ne pas pouvoir chanter « go bo you » sa version suédoise de « på vår gjorde », les seuls mots qu’il pense savoir dire après sept ans. Sa déception est de courte durée, car comme pour nous donner une leçon et nous rappeler qu’on doit garder espoir jusqu’à la fin, le deuxième couplet commence par « Det va då… » ! La chanson sera bilingue finalement. 

Je ne sais pas s’ils ont fait ça à Montréal aussi, mais sur le moment, dans ma tête, c’est pour nous. Le chanteur nous regarde, fier avec un sourire qui a l’air de dire « je suis fin hein?! ». Il sait qu’on est allé en Suède, ce printemps et je suis sûr que tous les autres spectateurs s’en foutent! En tout cas, vous n’avez jamais vu deux Québécois aussi heureux de chanter tout croche en suédois « go bo you » avec Ronnie, priceless!!

PERKELE garde son plus gros succès pour la fin! « Heart Full Of Pride », plus de huit millions d’écoutes sur Spotify. Il y a toujours beaucoup d’émotion, en spectacle, quand ils font chanter la foule sur les quelques lignes du refrain pendant de longues minutes. « I’ve got a flame in my heart that never dies , I’ve got a heart full of pride ». Une parfaite finale pour clore une parfaite prestation.

Quelle soirée merveilleuse. Et comme je suis fière de ma ville. On les a accueillis comme il se doit. On a su leur montrer qu’à Québec, on n’est peut-être pas aussi nombreux, mais on est passionnés et on les aime beaucoup. Je pense qu’on a réussi à leur démontrer notre reconnaissance. Un gros merci à District 7 et Baldy Sound Production, mais surtout à Sylvain Laniel, que je tanne depuis très longtemps pour qu’il fasse venir PERKELE au Québec. Je savais que je pouvais compter sur toi!

Ça va me prendre du temps à me remettre de ce spectacle, si je m’en remets un jour. Je ressens déjà la déprime post-spectacle s’installer. Mais j’ai la tête et le cœur pleins de souvenirs et de moments qui me rappellent que la vie vaut la peine de se battre.

Another dream come true! In a few hours, I’ll finally have the chance to welcome one of my all-time favorite bands, PERKELE, to my town. A Swedish punk rock band, Oi with a strong metal influence. In 2017, I fell in love with them within seconds of listening to their 1998 album Fran Flykt Till Kamp. With ASTA KASK, they introduced me to the “true” Swedish punk scene, and now I’m not listening to anything else. 

So after 8 years of waiting and begging, my wish still not granted, I went to see them in Sweden, in May 2024. Tonight will my second time, but this time at home, and at my favorite venue, L’Anti Bar et Spectacles.

And when I tell you that this is a dream come true for me, it’s because THE PROWLERS are also playing tonight! An Oi band from Montreal that I adore. Another of my favorite bands, and one of the best live bands I know. They’re celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, and it’s an honor to welcome them to Quebec City!

THE SCALLY CAP BRATS
First up, let’s welcome Ottawa celtic punk band THE SCALLY CAP BRATS. The show starts at 8:15pm. When one thinks Celtic punk, one immediately thinks of the Dropkick Murphys. You can feel the influences, but THE BRATS have a heavier sound, more raw, which I really like. The “Celtic” instrument is a mandolin, which adds a festive touch, contrasting well with the heavier Oi punk sound. It sounds like a ton of bricks – much excellent!

The duet of Mike and Mike on vocals really appeals to me. And it only takes a few songs to capture the attention of the crowd. The crowd approaches the stage. I don’t think anyone expected to be drawn in like this. Even my husband, who’s very picky about opening acts, keeps telling me “It’s good, I like it!”. 

They’re a unanimous hit with the L’Anti crowd tonight! After their set, people everywhere are saying “That was a good first band, I didn’t know them…”.

Bravo and thank you for this solid performance, a great discovery. 

THE PROWLERS
Just after 9pm, THE PROWLERS take to the stage. One of the bands I’ve seen most often at shows, and I never get bored. In my opinion, they’re the best in this genre (Oi). 

Solid songs with catchy choruses that you can sing along to. That’s why it’s so interesting to see them live. I can sing along and raise my fist in my bedroom, but it just doesn’t have the same effect.

All their songs have the raw, authentic energy of punk rock and the melodic touch of Oi. My favorites are “Taking Back The Pubs”, “Hate Us”, “Spred Your Bed” and of course, the best, live, “Drunken Skinhead”! As usual, the last song brings me a little sadness. I’ve been waiting months for this and it’s already over.  It always goes by too fast. 

I will keep as a souvenir the paper plate setlist used by Eric, the guitarist. It’s an original collector’s item. And I can even use it as a fan when it’s too hot, and it’s extremely hot tonight at L’Anti.

PERKELE
Before the show starts, I take a moment to ponder, to realize how lucky I am and to focus on the moment. I’ve seen PERKELE before, but on a stage that was too big. L’Anti is warm, intimate and punk rockin’!   

PERKELE is more than a punk band, Oi with metal influences, it’s a shot of happiness! There’s something undefinable in their sound that comforts me when I don’t even know I need it. They’re a feel-good band whose simple, positive music and lyrics give me the energy and motivation I need to get through life’s rough patches. Each album has its own sound and ambiance. 

The band kicks off their set shortly after 10pm with five masterpieces in a row, “Me”, “One Day”, “Paradise”, “A Way Out” and “What I Have Done”. It’s all they’ve got, anyway. From the very first notes, I’m off into my own world, where I’m alone with the band. With a little imagination, I manage to ignore the presence of over a hundred punks and skins all around me. I soon come back to reality, but it feels so good.  

What an incredible sound! From the guitar riffs of “What I Have Done”, to the sing along chorus of “Stories From the Past”, everything is perfect!  The sound is loud, but it’s not aggressive, just poignant. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, L’Anti is the place to be when it comes to sound. Always clear and powerful, but never deafening. I leave my earplugs in the car. 

I choose to stay in front. At the end of the stage, a little to one side, I enjoy an overview and proximity to the musicians and some protection against blows. I can enjoy the show without fear of being kicked in the face. 

You can feel the emotion in the crowd as everyone sings along to the choruses. We’re all experiencing something special tonight. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s been waiting a long time for this moment, and I’m sure the band is feeling it.  

It’s a great crowd, very energetic and committed, heating up the place like never before. Jouni, the drummer, knows that. He’s sweating so much he looks like he’s wearing a wetsuit instead of a T-shirt. And he doesn’t get much of a break. They play song after song after song. That’s another of the band’s qualities when playing live. They don’t waste time talking and doing something what else. A few shy and sincere thanks, but for them, it’s all about the music! An hour goes by so quickly.  

Even with such an extraordinary discography, I, like many fans, have an ultimate favorite song. It’s often the first song that hooked us. Mine is “Det Va Då” (339 plays on Spotify just since February 2017), which is originally in Swedish. I actually started singing in Swedish with this song. The band also has an English version, “Back in Time”, that I also like, but for me, this song is Swedish. In Sweden, they did it in Swedish and tonight, I have a slim hope, but you never know! My hope fades as soon as I hear the first lyrics “Back in time…” instead of “Det va då…”. Disappointed? Not really, there’s nothing to be disappointed about today. My husband, on the other hand, looks sad that he can’t sing “go bo you”, his Swedish version of “på vår gjorde”, the only words he thinks he knows how to say after 7 years. My disappointment is short-lived, because as if to teach us a lesson and remind us to keep hoping until the end, the second verse begins with “Det va då…” Well the song will be bilingual after all. 

I don’t know if they did that in Montreal too, but at the time, in my mind, it’s for us. The singer looks at us, proud, with a smile that looks like he’s saying “I’m nice, eh? ”, He knows we went to Sweden last spring, and I’m sure the rest of the audience couldn’t care less! In any case, you’ve never seen two Quebecers so happy to sing “go bo you” in Swedish with Ronnie – priceless!

PERKELE is saving their biggest hit for last! “Heart Full Of Pride”, with over 8 million plays on Spotify. There’s always a lot of emotion at a show when they get the crowd singing along to the chorus lines for long minutes. “I’ve got a flame in my heart that never dies , I’ve got a heart full of pride”. A perfect finale for a perfect performance.

What a wonderful evening. And how proud I am of my city. We made the band feel welcome. We were able to show them that in Québec City, we may not be many, but we’re passionate and we love them very much. I think we succeeded in showing them how grateful we are. A big thank you to District 7 and Baldy Sound Production, and especially to Sylvain Laniel, whom I’ve been bugging for a long time to bring PERKELE to Quebec. I knew I could count on you!

It’s going to take me a long time to get over this show, if I ever do. I can already feel the post-show blues setting in. But my head and heart are full of memories and moments that remind me that life is worth fighting for.
