THE OFFSPRING + RISE AGAINST + BE YOUR OWN PET | FESTIVAL D’ÉTÉ DE QUÉBEC | 07.07.2024

Pour ma deuxième couverture du FEQ, je suis sur les Plaines, qui sont pleines à craquer. J’y verrai pour la seconde fois en quelques jours RISE AGAINST, qui jouera après BE YOUR OWN PET mais avant THE OFFSPRING.

BE YOUR OWN PET 
Je ne connaissais pas le groupe de punk/garage BE YOUR OWN PET (BYOP) avant ce soir. Après quelques recherches, il appert que le groupe a été formé alors que les membres étaient adolescents. Après une séparation en 2008, ils se sont réunis en 2022. Évidemment, les sujets abordés ont évolué mais leur musique reste très dynamique. BYOP enchaîne les chansons avec une énergie féroce. Les lignes de basse puissantes s’allient à la batterie tonitruante et les riffs énergiques de la guitare.

Parlant d’énergie, Jemina Pearl (voix), n’en manque pas. Elle se déplace constamment sur la scène, tout en chantant, alternant entre une voix lancinante, presque séductrice, et les moments où elle hurle presque, terminant ses phrases en grimpant dans les aigus. Bref une performance qui a bien réchauffé la foule.  

*Petit moment touchant : après le premier groupe, c’est le temps de faire monter sur scène les gagnantes du concours « selfie ultime ». Il appert qu’en plus, c’est l’anniversaire d’une des deux jeunes femmes, prénomée Karine. Tout le monde sur les Plaines se sont mis à lui chanter « Bonne fête, Karine ». Ça a donné quelques frissons. 

RISE AGAINST 
Comme je l’ai mentionné plus haut, j’ai vu RISE AGAINST il y a à peine une semaine. Je craignais donc d’avoir une impression de copié-collé. Bien que le groupe ait interprété les même pièces, le show m’a paru différent : les morceaux s’enchaînent plus rapidement, Tim (McIlrath, guitare et voix) jase moins entre les morceaux, il y a plus de rigueur dans l’exécution. 

Il y a quand-même eu quelques interactions avec le public. Par exemple, Tim a demandé au public de taper dans les mains pour « All Because Of You ». Aussi, comme le spectacle est plus tôt qu’à Trois-Rivières, les musiciens peuvent voir la foule et Tim fait la remarque que c’est magnifique et que ça fait chaud au coeur. Tout comme au Festivoix, une chose que j’ai remarquée est que tous les membres du groupe ont le sourire aux lèvres et que, malgré les années et le succès, ça ne semble pas être devenu une tâche, ils continuent à tripper à faire ce qu’ils font. 

Je dois donner une mention à l’organisation du FEQ : les nouveaux écrans géants sont plus grands et rendent une image tellement claire, qu’on peut bien voir, peu importe où on est placé sur le site. (C’est d’ailleurs la première fois depuis toutes ces années que je vois le groupe en personne ou à l’écran que je remarque que le chanteur et guitariste a les yeux vairons.)

THE OFFSPRING 
Oh! Qu’ils étaient attendus! Les membres de THE OFFSPRING ont bien allumé la foule en faisant une entrée du tonnerre avec « Come Out And Play ». Les fans chantent en chœur les exclamations (onomatopées) et les refrains. Pour les premières paroles, j’ai eu l’impression que Dexter (chant et guitare rythmique) manquait un peu de voix, mais ce ne devait être qu’un simple ajustement à faire, car ça s’est vite replacé. Le site est archi plein. 

Dexter s’est exclamé : « This is the place to be. Hell yeah! » Lui et Noodles (lead guitare et back vocals) ont fait ouvrir les lumières pour voir la foule. Noodles de s’exclamer : « Now I’m nervous ».  Ils ont ensuite flatté la foule en disant que nous sommes sexy, avant d’entamer « Staring at the Sun » suivi de leur populaire reprise des Ramones « Blitzkrieg Bop » puis de « Bad Habit ».

Encore une petite pause pour discuter avec la foule, avec laquelle Tim se fait demander de chanter « Gotta Get Away ». Ensuite, on a eu droit à tout un solo de batterie! Contrairement à RISE AGAINST avant eux, les gars de THE OFFSPRING interagissent énormément avec leur public.

THE OFFSPRING est un des groupes qui a marqué mon adolescence, alors qu’on traînait en ville et qu’on faisait du skate, du BMX et autres occupations d’ados. Au point que, même si ça faisait quelques années que je n’avais pas pris le temps de les écouter, je connais encore toutes les pièces ou presque et je les chantais (avec quelques mots manquants, mais ça on ne le dit pas). Quelqu’un a fait remarquer qu’ils font toujours les mêmes morceaux. En fait, ils n’ont pas le choix, c’est ce qui a marqué les esprits, c’est ce que les gens veulent entendre. Ils jouent sur la nostalgie et ça fonctionne. Que de moments je me suis rappelés tout au long de ce spectacle. 

J’ai l’impression de souvent terminer mes textes de cette façon, mais je n’ai pas le choix de dire que j’ai passé une excellente soirée punck/rock au FEQ.

For my second coverage of the FEQ, I’m on the packed Plaines. I’ll be there for the second time in a few days to see RISE AGAINST, playing after BE YOUR OWN PET but before THE OFFSPRING.

BE YOUR OWN PET 
I didn’t know about the punk/garage band BE YOUR OWN PET (BYOP) until tonight. After a bit of research, it turns out that the band was formed when the members were teenagers. After splitting up in 2008, they reunited in 2022. Obviously, they don’t sing about the same things, but their music remains very dynamic. BYOP plays song after song with ferocious energy. Powerful bass lines combine with thundering drums and energetic guitar riffs. And Jemina Pearl (vocals) is not short on energy. She’s constantly moving around the stage, all the while singing, alternating between a haunting, almost seductive voice, and moments when she’s almost screaming, finishing her lines by hitting high notes. Their performance really warmed up the crowd. 

*A touching moment: after the first band, the winners of the « Ultimate Selfie » contest went on stage. It just so happens that one of the two young ladies, Karine, was celebrating her birthday. Everyone on the Plaines started singing « Happy Birthday, Karine » to her. Pretty much everyone was moved to the core. 

RISE AGAINST 
As I said, I saw RISE AGAINST barely a week ago. So I was worried that it would a copy/paste show. Although the band performed the same songs, the show seemed different: the songs followed more quickly, Tim (McIlrath, guitar and vocals) chatted less between songs, there was more rigor in the execution.

Still, there was some interaction with the audience. For example, Tim asked everyone to clap along to « All Because Of You ». Also, as the show was earlier than in Trois-Rivières, the musicians could see the crowd, and Tim noticed that it was beautiful and heartwarming. As at the Festivoix, one thing I noticed is that all the band members have smiles on their faces and that, despite the years and the success, it doesn’t seem to have become a chore, they’re still tripping at doing what they do. 

I have to give a mention to the FEQ organization: the new giant screens are bigger and render such a clear image, that you can see well, no matter where you are standing. (Incidentally, this is the first time in all these years that I’ve seen the band in person or on screen that I’ve noticed that the singer and guitarist has minnow eyes).

THE OFFSPRING 
Oh, how eagerly they were awaited! THE OFFSPRING set the crowd alight with a thunderous entrance to « Come Out And Play ». The fans sang along the exclamations and choruses. For the first few lines, I had the impression that Dexter’s voice was not as strong, but maybe it was just an adjustment, as it soon came back into tune. The site was packed. 

Dexter exclaimed: « This is the place to be. Hell yeah! » He and Noodles (lead guitar and back vocals) asked to turn on more lights to see the crowd. Noodles exclaimed: « Now I’m nervous ». They then flattered the crowd saying that we were sexy, before opening with « Staring at the Sun », followed by their popular Ramones cover « Blitzkrieg Bop » and then « Bad Habit ».

Another short break to chat with the crowd, and Tim was asked to sing « Gotta Get Away » with the crowd. Then came the drums solo! Unlike RISE AGAINST before them, THE OFFSPRING interact a lot with their audience.

THE OFFSPRING is one of the bands that left their mark during my teenage years, when we hung out in the city, skateboarding, riding BMXs and doing other teenage things. So much so that, even though I hadn’t taken the time to listen to them for a few years, I still know almost every song and I was singing along (skipping a few words, but that’s a secret between you and me). Someone pointed out that they do the same songs over and over again. In fact, they have no choice: it’s what people remember, it’s what people want to hear. They cater to on nostalgia and it works. I remembered so many moments throughout this show. 

I often seem to conclude with the same, but I have to say that I had an excellent punk/rock evening at the FEQ.
