IRISH MOUTARDE + HATE IT TOO | GRIZZLY FUZZ (QC) | 22.03.2025

Oui, la Saint-Patrick c’était le 17 mars (mais un lundi), alors LE party a eu lieu samedi le 22 à Québec, dans une ambiance punk rock et celtique survoltée. 

C’est le groupe HATE IT TOO qui était chargé d’exciter la faune bigarrée avec son punk rock un peu fâché mais aussi assez funky. En effet, pour qui a une oreille musicale, on pouvait discerner quelques notes de jazz et même prog dans leurs compos enlevantes qui ont réussi à faire bouger les gens arrivés à temps.

Le quatuor, formé de Cédric (voix, guitare), Marc-Antoine (guitare), Stéphane (basse) et Jean-Philippe (batterie), a livré la marchandise comme à l’occasion du festival ENVOL & MACADAM à L’Agora, l’été passé, et a joué les trois titres de son récent EP, Présentéisme, entre autres chansons en français et en anglais ayant parfois de très légères intonations à la Billy Talent, surtout dans les refrains.

Pendant « Twelve’s The New Eight » on a demandé un circle pit convivial, car il y a des jeunes dans la foule, c’est une soirée pour tous (comme il devrait s’en faire un peu plus souvent à mon avis). Et pour terminer, comme par habitude, on a eu droit à une version pimpée de « La folie en quatre » de Daniel Bélanger, tout à fait à propos pour moi. Pour les intéressés, le groupe a déjà deux albums, trois EP et quelques simples à son actif, alors prêtez l’oreille sur votre plateforme d’écoute préférée.

Ensuite, qui dit punk celtique dit boisson, et on dirait bien que la bière et le Jameson sont de retour sur scène!

L’ambiance est déjà à la fête : il y peu de gens habillés pour l’occasion, mais ils le sont comme il se doit, pantalons à motif de tartan, kilts, accessoires verts et… verre à la main, bien sûr. Sur une nouvelle intro du French Cancan original (ici je fais un bisou de chef), la troupe des six joyeux lurons de IRISH MOUTARDE monte sur scène avec sourires, attirail carreauté et kilt.

Tony au banjo, d’ailleurs, porte un chandail de baseball des Nordiques mais tout vert avec logo du groupe!

Et en plus du banjo, il y a accordéon et cornemuse pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas, car oui il y avait de nouveaux fans (gentiment appelés moutardeux et moutardeuses) dans la foule.

La liste de chansons est prometteuse – elle fait deux pages! Pleine de compos, quelques reprises et beaucoup de plaisanteries.

Le groupe s’amuse sur scène, les fans tout autant, ils chantent toutes les paroles, ça danse comme des fous, les musiciens semblent avoir une énergie inépuisable, surtout la chanteuse, Andrée-Anne. Une vraie dynamo!

Le groupe existe depuis une dizaine d’années et joue ses classiques, mais encore une fois on a droit à une nouveauté, « Free Market Anarchy ».

Et parlant d’anarchie, entre une chanson sur l’histoire de la bière (« Charlie Mops ») et une autre en hommage à la Beauce (« Jarrets »), on a aussi droit à une version déjantée de… « My Heart Will Go On ». C’est fou je vous dis.

SI vous avez un groupe à ajouter à votre liste de shows à voir, c’est IRISH MOUTARDE certain. Et juste pour vous intriguer, je ne vous dirai pas ce qu’il se passe au rappel…

C’est la déjà la quatrième que je vois IRISH MOUTARDE en spectacle. Et c’est un plaisir renouvelé. Quelle joie! Quelle énergie! Enfin je me demandais, en revenant chez moi, comment définir le style musical de IRISH MOUTARDE et j’ai trouvé : c’est comme du speed celtique hahaha!! Sans blague, les paroles déferlent tellement vite et les musiciens jouent tout aussi vite, c’est étourdissant!

Yes, St. Patrick’s Day was on March 17 (but on a Monday), so THE party took place on Saturday the 22nd in Quebec City, in a supercharged, Celtic, punk rock ambiance.

HATE IT TOO was in charge of exciting the crowd with their angry but also quite funky punk rock. Indeed, for those with a musical ear, a few notes of jazz and even prog could be discerned in their lively compositions, which managed to get the crowd that got in just in time. The quartet, made up of Cedric (vocals, guitar), Marc-Antoine (guitar), Stéphane (bass) and Jean-Philippe (drums), delivered the goods as they had during the Envol & Macadam festival at L’Agora last summer, and played all three tracks of their latest EP, Présentéisme, among other songs in French and English, with some having very slight Billy Talent intonations, especially in the choruses. During “Twelve’s The New Eight” a friendly circle pit was called for, as there were young people in the crowd, as it was an all-ages show (as it should more often be, in my opinion). And to round things off, as usual, we were treated to a pimped-up version of Daniel Bélanger’s “La folie en quatre”, which was just the right one for me. For those interested, the band already has two albums, three EPs and a few singles to its credit, so lend an ear on your favorite music streaming platform.

Then, you know how celtic punk rhymes with drinking, so it looks like beer and Jameson are back on stage! The mood is already festive: not many people are dressed up, but they’re dressed for the occasion – tartan pants, kilts, accessories in green and… beer cup in hand, of course. Over a new intro to the original French Cancan (chef’s kiss here), IRISH MOUTARDE’s six-piece troupes take to the stage with smiles, plaid clothing and a kilt. Tony, on banjo, is wearing a green Nordiques baseball jersey with the band’s logo! And with the banjo there’s accordion and bagpipes for those who don’t know, because yes, there were some new fans in the crowd. The setlist looks promising – it’s two pages long! Full of original songs, a few covers and lots of banter. The band has a lot of fun on stage, and so do the fans, singing all the lyrics, dancing like crazy, and the musicians seem to have inexhaustible energy, especially vocalist Andrée-Anne. She’s a dynamo! The band has been around for ten years and plays its classics, but once again we’re treated to a new song, “Free Market Anarchy”. And speaking of anarchy, between a song about the history of beer (“Charlie Mops”) and another in honor of the Beauce region (“Jarrets”), we’re also treated to a crazy version of… “My Heart Will Go On”… It’s a madhouse, I’m telling you. If you’ve got a band to add to your bucket list of shows, it’s IRISH MOUTARDE for sure. And just to keep you intrigued, I won’t tell you what happens during the encore…

This is the fourth time I’ve seen IRISH MOUTARDE. And it’s a renewed pleasure. The happiness! The energy! On my way home, I was wondering how to define IRISH MOUTARDE‘s music genre, and I think I found it: it’s like Celtic speed, hahaha! No kidding, the lyrics come out so fast and the musicians play just as fast, it’s dizzying!
