PHOQUE OFF | XIA-3 + POSTFUN + PEANUT BUTTER SUNDAY | 18.02.2025

Un autre soir à me demander où stationner pendant le déneigement, et une autre salle à découvrir dans le cadre du PHOQUE OFF 2025, cette fois-ci Le Pantoum, bien caché dans le détour d’une intersection. C’est la vitrine « Acadian Embassy » ce soir, avec trois formations venues directement des Maritimes. Ça m’intrigue!

De Terre-Neuve et comme à Terre-Neuve, ça commence avec peu de retard (haha) avec le trio XIA-3, formé de Jing Xia (guzheng), Ritche Perez (guitare baryton!), et Brian Downton (batterie).

Les sonorités du guzheng, une cithare chinoise traditionnelle qui se joue à plat, sont enchanteresses, et les compos sont originales. Je suis plus que surprise, je suis ravie!

De Halifax nous arrive POSTFUN, un groupe qui mélange les genres midwest emo, post-hardcore et l’alt-country penchant toutefois davantage vers l’acadien vraiment canadien que vers l’attitude américaine (heureusement).

Ensuite et enfin, j’ai l’occasion de voir PEANUT BUTTER SUNDAY, de Baie Sainte-Marie, aussi en Nouvelle-Écosse. Un autre groupe dont j’avais entendu parler et qu’on me recommandait même avant leur passage au FEQ.

À peu près dans le même genre musical mais un peu plus punk, j’apprécie aussi cette même ambiance de fête axée sur la bonne humeur et la communion avec le public, qui le leur rend bien. 

XIA-3 m’aura dépaysée, mais POST et PEANUT BUTTER SUNDAY m’auront ramenée à de brefs moments de mon adolescence passés dans les Prairies. Ah nostalgie quand tu me tiens…

Another evening trying to find parking during snow removal, and another venue to discover as part of the PHOQUE OFF 2025, this time Le Pantoum, tucked away at a crossroads. It’s the “Acadian Embassy” showcase tonight, featuring three bands straight from the Maritimes. I’m intrigued!

From Newfoundland, and as it is in Newfoundland, it starts a little late (haha) with XIA-3, made up of Jing Xia (guzheng), Ritche Perez (baritone guitar!), and Brian Downton (drums). The sounds coming from guzheng, a traditional Chinese zither played flat, are enchanting, and the songs are original. I’m more than surprised, I’m delighted!

From Halifax comes POSTFUN, a band that blends midwest emo, post-hardcore and alt-country, but leans more towards the truly Canadian Acadian than the American attitude (thankfully).

Next and finally, I get to see PEANUT BUTTER SUNDAY, from Baie Sainte-Marie, also in Nova Scotia. Another band I’d heard of and was recommended even before their show at the FEQ. More or less in the same musical genre, but a little more punk, I also enjoy the same party atmosphere focused on happiness and sharing with an audience that gladly returns the favor. 

XIA-3 may have left me feeling like a stranger in a strangeland, but POST and PEANUT BUTTER SUNDAY took me back to brief moments I spent as a teenager in the Prairies. Ah, nostalgia you got a hold on me…
