JOUR 2 – SAMEDI
Nous nous réveillons dans notre “Airbnb” pour ensuite prendre le temps d’allez casser la croute dans un restaurant avant de reprendre nos activités festives.
Avec un peu de route pour revenir sur le site et quelques arrêts vitaux, nous arrivons enfin à mi-chemin de la performance de BELVEDERE notre premier groupe de la journée, après avoir malheureusement manqué les groupes NO WAY OUT, QUEST KON-FUSE, JUGHEAD’S REVENGE et COLORSFADE.
BELVEDERE
Performance plutôt courte pour nous, fautifs d’être arrivés à mi-chemin durant leur performance. Beaucoup de festivaliers sont déjà sur place, je pense remarquer qu’il y avait moins de gens à la même heure l’an dernier. “Belvedere” est un groupe punk au rythmes rapides, avec des solos de guitare plutôt courts mais bien remplis! De quoi plaire à tout les fans de punk-rock “oldschool”.
1994
« Cover Band » de chez nous à la sauce punk des année 90, 1994 arrivent sur scène avec beaucoup d’énergie en cet après-midi chaleureusement intense.
Ils accueillent beaucoup d’artistes surprises en collaboration, qui sont présents pour jouer une ou plusieurs chansons avec le groupe, tels que: Matt Riddle de NO USE FOR A NAME, Guillaume Fortin, “drummer” de « TEN FOOT POLE, Mike Ledonne, chanteur de CHASER ainsi que Chris Swinney de THE ATARIS. Le groupe accueille également une jeune fille de 13 ans, qui chantera sur scène avec son père pour la première fois.
DEATH BY STEREO
Tout juste avant leur entrée sur scène, je sentais que ça allait brasser pas mal! La foule est en feu, prête à accueillir chaque chanson électrisante, remplie de « circle pits » et de gens qui chantent avec eux sur plusieurs de leurs chansons. Ils savent comment attirer une foule devant eux pour les faire participer. Ils ont un envoûtement qu’on ne peut s’empêcher de suivre avec leur cadence « two steps » et leurs « breakdowns » parfois mélodieux.
Je recommande ce groupe pour les gens plus ardus, pratiquant le karaté dans le “pit ».
PÉPÉ ET SA GUITARE
Dès son arrivée, la foule est en délire et l’accueille à bras ouverts en chantant avec lui ses plus grands classiques. Des ballons se font déployer sur la foule question de bien commencer le “party”. Il nous fait faire des « gorgées » en levant sa bière et son interaction avec la foule est, biensur, impeccable! Tout de suite, on tombe en amour avec son charisme et on a tous un peu soif en le voyant performer. On aurait pratiquement tous envie de devenir des « grands chums » avec lui.
Une performance délivrée avec succès et beaucoup de plaisir humoristiques!
IGNITE
Une entrée fracassante et tant attendue de la part des fans. Nous sommes loin d’être déçus et, surtout, pas surpris de voir leur énergie s’emparer de la scène comme chaque fois qu’ils y montent.
Au menu, des chansons “wave », ce qui veut dire « mollo » par moments pour ensuite relancer dans la figure des amateurs de post-punk hardcore. Les fans son très réceptifs envers ce groupe qui ne fait que grandir constamment!
Des musiciens dévoués, prêts à gratter les routes d’asphalte de la Californie, jusqu’à Sainte-Thérèse pour enflammer ce party. Eli, le chanteur, a aussi perdu un proche (son père) d’un cancer et prend à coeur cette cause que nous sommes tous rassemblés pour soutenir.
FIRE SALE
Juste avant leur entrée sur scène nous vient Lilly, présentée par l’animateur, qui nous parle de son propre cancer assez rare et de son tattoo sur le haut de l’arcade qui signifie « fuck cancer”. Le public s’exclame haut et fort avec l’animateur: « FUCK CANCER » à plusieurs reprises.
Matt Riddle et Chris Swinney reprennent la scène, cette fois-ci pour un « set » complet, accompagnés des autres musiciens du groupe “Fire Sale”.
Le chanteur mentionne qu’ils n’ont pas pratiqué ensemble depuis environs 8 mois et que c’est la première fois qu’ils jouent ensemble depuis ce temps.
À un moment les musiciens se regardaient entre eux pour se retrouver lors d’une chanson, ce qui à fait ressentir ce certain « manque de pratique », mais ce n’était que sympathique car, malgré cela, ils ont donné tout ce qu’ils avaient! Un groupe haut en couleurs je dois dire!
AUTHORITY ZERO
Le show commence par un “razothon” avec deux participantes et un participant avec les cheveux tout aussi longs qu’elles et une barbe digne des plus grands vikings.
Un moment émotifs pour les participant.es qui durera pendant au moins trois chansons. Nous retrouvons un public engagé, qui encourage ces gens pour leur acte de grande sagesse.
Le groupe donne une prestation du tonnerre, qui semblait fort attendue de la part des gens.
Nous avons droits à des solos de guitare énergisants et à une batterie roulant à une vitesse fulgurante, mais surtout entrainante.
Ce n’est probablement pas la musique préférée de ta grand-mère, mais au final, il n’est jamais trop tard pour apprendre à aimer ce groupe originaire de l’Arizona!
H20
Nous revenons d’allez manger a l’extérieur puisque nous n’avons trouvé aucune option végétarienne de disponible sur le site (je suis solidaire de ma conjointe). Nous sommes donc de retour pendant la prestation de H20.
Le public tape des mains et chante avec le groupe qui ne montre clairement aucun signe de fatigue!Des sauts synchronisés entre les membres et beaucoup de « headbangs » se font aller.
Le chanteur descend dans la foule pour y chanter ses chansons et mentionne que de cette façon, “c’est un vrai show hardcore”, ce qui ne fait qu’augmenter l’influence que le groupe porte déjà sur son public. Un « circle pit » se crée même autour de lui!
On apprend par ailleurs que le batteur est lui-même le fils du chanteur, âgé de 52 ans. Quelle relation père-fils incroyable ça doit être de partager la scène et de voyager en famille.
Une expérience sans doute inoubliable pour eux, mais aussi pour beaucoup de fans présents cette soirée là!
CHASER
L’animateur nous présente le groupe comme étant le plus gros party du festival selon lui, confiant de ce qu’il dit après quatre années consécutives pour le groupe à l’évènement. Ceux qui croyaient l’avoir facile à ce moment ce sont vite rendu compte dans quelle situation ils étaient. Un groupe qui décolle avec beaucoup, beaucoup d’enthousiasme et une énergie démarquante.
Un entrain fulgurant de la part des membres, mais surtout du chanteur qui n’hésite pas à sauter dans la foule très présente devant lui et à y chanter pendant qu’il est soutenu dans les aires en « crowd surfing”.
Les chansons passent et, à un moment donné, une quinzaines d’enfants entre sept et douze ans finissent par monter sur scène. Le groupe souhaite souligner la participation des jeunes “punkers” en les faisant danser sur scène et partir en « body surfing » à plusieurs reprises.
On peut dire que la relève punk se fait de plus en plus jeune et c’est beau de voir que la scène ne mourra pas d’ici demain!
BOUNCING SOULS
Après une journée plus que chaude et bien remplie, c’est le temps pour le dernier groupe de la soirée, BOUNCING SOULS.
L’animateur nous fait un retour sur le festival et la cause qui, d’ailleurs, a amassé plus de onze-mille dollars cette année! On peut dire que c’est un succès! Les festivaliers montrent qu’ils ont encore du jus pour ce dernier groupe à la sauce très punk en se lançant encore en « body surfing » à plusieurs reprises, pratiquement sans jamais arrêter.
Le chanteur dédie une chanson à une amie qui a, elle aussi, combattu ce fléau qui est le cancer.
En comparaison à la soirée de la veille avec “Dropkick Murphys”, je constate que moins de gens semblent être au rendez-vous, mais ce n’est pas vide pour autant, bien au contraire!
Ils invitent d’autres musiciens qui étaient présents sur scène durant la journée pour faire les choristes sur une chanson acoustique.Beaucoup de chansons « mollo » comme dirais-je, ce qui est un peu surprenant pour boucler un festival, mais les fans embarquent tout de même sans retenue.
Ils ont joué une heure de spectacle et la foule, qui semble à peine fatiguée, en redemande! Malheureusement la soirée tire à sa fin plus tôt que la soirée précédente et aucun rappel n’est fait.
LES AFTERS
Pour les guerriers et guerrières qui sont prêts à tout pour profiter de ce festival jusqu’à sa toute fin, nous devons nous diriger, au MONTECRISTO ou à LA PROTESTANTE pour continuer cette soirée.
Nous avons eu la chance d’avoir des billets en personne par Ryan Stevenson lui même (merci Ryan), qui était en présence d’un ami de très longue date, nul autre que Nick Gagnon de “Kamakazi ».
RYAN STEVENSON
Nous arrivons donc à LA PROTESTANTE et déjà, l’endroit est officiellement “sold-out”.
RYAN STEVENSON ouvre le bal comme premier artiste de l’after-party en tant que chanteur-guitariste solo. Sachant qu’il est originalement « drummeur », on voit qu’il sait se démarquer dans plusieurs sphères musicalement.
Après quelques chansons, il nous parle du fait qu’ELVIS a été pour lui une grande influence dans la musique et que c’est lui qui aurait inspiré sa chanson « Remember » que moi et ma conjointe n’avons pu se retenir de chanter avec lui comme de vrais groupies.
Il nous parle de sa mère décédée du cancer il y à dix ans et nous présente une chanson qu’il a écrit pour elle juste avant son départ, “Dear Mom”.
Il joue aussi « I Hate You » en acoustique et mentionne que ses chansons sont disponibles en version « full band » sur plusieurs plateformes de streaming.
C’est par la performance de Ryan Stevenson que le festival se termine pour nous. Bien que le reste de la soirée s’annonce pour être une expérience unique avec la prestation acoustique de musiciens des groupes BELVEDERE, AUTORITY ZERO, H20 et BOUNCING SOULS, nous devons repartir sur la route de retour vers Québec. LA PROTESTANTE continue toutefois de se remplir jusqu’à sa pleine capacité, laissant donc plusieurs fans redécouvrir certains groupes de la soirée sous une autre facette. Quelques photos de la soirée nous laissent croire que l’énergie est toujours présente.

DAY 2 – SATURDAY
We wake up in our “Airbnb” and then take time to grab a bite to eat in a restaurant before resuming our festive activities.
With a bit of a drive back to the site and a few vital stops, we finally arrive halfway to the performance of “Belvedere” our first band of the day, having unfortunately missed the bands “No Way Out”, “Quest Kon-Fuse”, “Jughead’s Revenge” and “Colorsfade”.
BELVEDERE
Rather short performance for us, at fault for arriving halfway through their performance. A lot of festival-goers are already there, and I think I notice that there were fewer people at the same time last year. “Belvedere” is a fast-paced punk band, with guitar solos that are short but full! Something to please all fans of oldschool punk-rock.
1994
Local cover band with a 90‘s punk twist, ’1994′ take the stage with plenty of energy on this warmly intense afternoon.
They welcome many surprise collaborative artists, who are on stage to play one or more songs with the band, such as: Matt Riddle of “No Use For A Name”, Guillaume Fortin, drummer of “Ten Foot Pole”, Mike Ledonne, singer of “CHASER” and Chris Swinner of “The Ataris”. The band also welcomes a 13-year-old girl, who will be singing on stage with her father for the first time.
DEATH BY STEREO
Just before they hit the stage, I had a feeling they were going to rock! The crowd is on fire, ready for every electrifying song, full of circle pits and people singing along to many of their songs. They know how to get a crowd in front of them to participate. They have a way of mesmerizing you with their two-step cadence and sometimes melodious breakdowns.
I’d recommend this band for the more hardened, pit karate crowd.
PÉPÉ ET SA GUITARE
As soon as he arrives, the crowd goes wild, welcoming him with open arms and singing along to his greatest classics. Balloons are deployed over the crowd to get the party started. He makes us take sips as he raises his beer, and his interaction with the crowd is, of course, impeccable! We immediately fall in love with his charisma, and we all get a little thirsty watching him perform. We’d almost all like to become “big buddies” with him.
A performance delivered with success and lots of humorous fun!
IGNITE
A smashing entrance that fans had been waiting for. We were far from disappointed and, above all, not surprised to see their energy take over the stage, as it does every time they perform. On the menu, “wave” songs, meaning “ easy ” at times, and then throwing them back in the face of hardcore post-punk fans. Fans are very receptive to this band, which is constantly growing.
Dedicated musicians, ready to hit the asphalt roads from California to Sainte-Thérèse to set this party alight. Eli, the singer, has also lost someone close to him (his father) to cancer, and takes to heart the cause we’ve all gathered to support.
FIRE SALE
Just before they take the stage comes Lilly, introduced by the host, who tells us about her own rare cancer and her tattoo on her upper arch that means “fuck cancer”. The audience exclaims loud and clear with the host: “FUCK CANCER” several times.
Matt Riddle and Chris Swinney take the stage again, this time for a full set, accompanied by the other musicians of the “Fire Sale” band.
The singer mentions that they haven’t practiced together for about 8 months, and that this is the first time they’ve played together in that time. At one point, the musicians looked at each other to find each other during a song, which made us feel that certain “lack of practice”, but it was only nice because, despite this, they gave it all they had! A colorful band, I must say!
AUTHORITY ZERO
The show began with a “razothon” featuring two female participants and one male participant with hair as long as theirs and a beard worthy of the greatest Vikings.
An emotional moment for the participants that lasts for at least three songs. We find a sustained audience, cheering these people on for their act of great wisdom. The band gave a thunderous performance, which seemed to be eagerly awaited by the crowd.
We’re treated to energizing guitar solos and drums that rolls along at breakneck speed, but above all, it’s catchy. It’s probably not your grandmother’s favorite music, but in the end, it’s never too late to learn to love this band from Arizona!
H20
We’ve just come back from eating out since we couldn’t find any vegetarian options available on site (I’m in solidarity with my partner). So we’re back for H20’s set.
The audience claps and sings along with the band, who clearly show no signs of fatigue!
Synchronized jumping between band members and lots of headbangs.
The singer goes down into the crowd to sing his songs and says that this way, “it’s a real hardcore show”, which only increases the influence the band already has on its audience. A “circle pit” even forms around him!
We also learn that the drummer himself is the singer’s son, aged 52. What an incredible father-son relationship it must be to share the stage and travel as a family. No doubt an unforgettable experience for them, but also for many of the fans present that evening!
CHASER
The host introduces the band as the biggest party of the festival in his opinion, confident of what he says after four consecutive years for the band at the event. Those who thought they had it easy at the time soon realized what they were in for. A band that takes off with lots and lots of enthusiasm and energy. A dazzling enthusiasm from the members, but especially from the singer, who doesn’t hesitate to jump into the crowd in front of him and sing along as he is supported in the crowd surfing areas.
The songs go on and on, and at one point some fifteen kids between the ages of seven and twelve take to the stage. The band is keen to highlight the participation of these young “punkers” by having them dance on stage and go “body surfing” on several occasions.
It’s fair to say that the next generation of punkers is getting younger all the time, and it’s great to see that the scene won’t die out by tomorrow!
BOUNCING SOULS
After a hot and busy day, it’s time for the last band of the evening, BOUNCING SOULS!
The host tells us all about the festival and the cause, which raised over eleven thousand dollars this year! It’s definitely a success! Festival-goers show they’ve still got some juice for this final punk-flavored band by throwing themselves into “body surfing” over and over again, almost without stopping.
The singer dedicates a song to a friend who has also battled the scourge of cancer.
Compared to the previous evening with Dropkick Murphys, I notice that fewer people seem to be there, but it’s not empty – quite the opposite!
They invite other musicians who were on stage during the day to sing backing vocals on an acoustic song.
A lot of “mollo” songs, as I’d say, which is a bit surprising for the end of a festival, but the fans get on board without holding back.
They’ve played an hour’s show, and the audience, who hardly seem tired, are asking for more! Unfortunately, the evening draws to a close earlier than the previous evening, and no encore is given.
THE AFTERS
For the warriors who are desperate to enjoy this festival to the very end, we must head to either MONTECRISTO or LA PROTESTANTE to continue the evening.
We were lucky enough to get tickets in person from Ryan Stevenson himself, who was in the presence of a long-time friend, none other than Nick Gagnon of “Kamakazi”.
RYAN STEVENSON
So we arrive at LA PROTESTANTE and already, the place is officially sold-out.
Ryan Stevenson opens the afterparty as the first solo singer-guitarist. Knowing that he is originally a “drummer”, we can see that he knows how to stand out in several musical spheres.
After a few songs, he talks about how ELVIS has been a great musical influence for him. ELVIS is said to have inspired his song “Remember”, which my partner and I couldn’t resist singing along to like real groupies.
He talks about his mother, who died of cancer ten years ago, and presents a song he wrote for her just before she left, “Dear Mom”.
He also plays “I Hate You” acoustic and mentions that his songs are available in “full band” version on several streaming platforms.
Ryan Stevenson’s performance brings the festival to a conclusion for us. Although the rest of the evening promises to be a unique experience, with acoustic performances by musicians from BELVEDERE, AUTHORITY ZERO, H20 and BOUNCING SOULS, we have to get back on the road to Quebec City. However, LA PROTESTANTE continues to fill to capacity, leaving many fans to rediscover some of the evening’s bands in a different perspective. A few photos from the evening show that the energy is still there.
