RISE AGAINST + KENNYHOOPLA + PINE TREE CATHEDRAL | FESTIVOIX DE TROIS-RIVIÈRES | 30.06.2024

Ce dimanche 30 juin, c’est la première des trois soirées punk rock du FESTIVOIX. La température est de notre côté et c’est devant un parterre bien rempli et une foule énergique que se sont produit les trois groupes.

PINE TREE CATHEDRAL
Sortis d’on ne sait où, le groupe québécois PINE TREE CATHEDRAL a su nous séduire dès la première chanson. Le groupe, plutôt jeune, nous a donné une solide performance.

Avec des influences aussi variées qu’improbables, allant du post punk, au jazz, en passant par le grunge et plus encore, le groupe nous entraine dans un monde imaginaire pas si imaginaire que ça. Et que dire du chanteur? Il a une voix étonnamment mature, polyvalente et puissante.

En plus de pièces originales toutes aussi excellentes les unes que les autres, nous avons eu droit à très bonne reprise de Killing in the Name, de Rage Against The Machine. Un gros coup de cœur pour moi!

KENNYHOOPLA
Bien que son nom ne me dît absolument rien, le chanteur américain KENNYHOOPLA était attendu par plusieurs fans. Accompagné seulement d’un guitariste et un drummer, il nous a offert un punk rock bonbon.

Bien que je reconnaisse son talent, que j’ai pu constater l’enthousiasme de la foule et remarqué que plusieurs chantaient avec lui, il manquait à mon humble avis un petit quelque chose. Très bon, mais trop pop pour moi. J’ai d’ailleurs eu l’impression qu’il y avait quelques longueurs. Le groupe avait pourtant commencé de façon très dynamique. Le chanteur a commencé la dernière toune en faisant un back flip à partir du bass drum. J’aurais aimé cette énergie déployée tout au long de leur prestation.

RISE AGAINST
Le clou de la soirée : RISE AGAINST. Ils étaient attendus avec impatience, les billets de la soirée s’étant envolés très rapidement. Le groupe devait être de l’édition 2020 du Festivoix. Tim McIlrath a d’ailleurs remarqué que le groupe n’était pas venu au Québec depuis longtemps. (Leur dernière visite date d’avril 2022, en fait.) C’est plein à craquer devant la scène du Fleuve Loto-Québec. 

Pour leur premier spectacle de la saison, Tim est en mode séduction. Il nous dit qu’à chaque fois qu’ils viennent jouer dans la province, ils reçoivent une dose incroyable d’amour. Il a même su nous nommer quelques villes visitées dans les dernières années, telles que Rimouski et Jonquière. Il a même dit : “The reason we keep come back to Quebec Is All Because of You” avant d’entamer cette pièce d’anthologie. 

La prestation de RISE AGAINST était toute en énergie et en émotions avec des pièces phares comme Satellite, The Good Left Undone, Help Is on the Way, I Don’t Want to Be Here Anymore, Re-Education, Hero of War (petite larme, ici, en pensant au nombre de fois que j’ai écouté cette chanson alors que mon chum était en Afghanistan) avant de finir en force avec Give It All et Savior.

Sunday June 30 marked the first of three punk rock evenings at the Festivoix. The weather was on our side, and it was in front of a full audience and an energetic crowd that the 3 bands performed.

PINE TREE CATHEDRAL

Out of nowhere, Quebec band PINE TREE CATHEDRAL won us over from the very first song. The rather young band gave us a solid performance. With influences as varied as they are improbable, ranging from post-punk to jazz, grunge and more, the band takes us into a not-so-imaginary imaginary world. And what about the singer? His voice is surprisingly mature, versatile and powerful. In addition to the excellent original songs, we were treated to a very good cover of Rage Against The Machine’s Killing in the Name. A big hit for me!

KENNYHOOPLA

Although his name meant absolutely nothing to me, American singer KENNYHOOPLA was eagerly awaited by many fans. Accompanied only by a guitarist and a drummer, he offered us some sweet punk rock. Although I recognize his talent, saw the crowd’s enthusiasm and noticed that many were singing along, in my humble opinion, there was something missing. Very good, but too pop for me. In fact, I had the impression that it went on a bit too long. The band had started in a very dynamic way. The singer started the last song with a back flip from the bass drum. I would have liked to have seen this energy throughout their performance

RISE AGAINST

The highlight of the evening: RISE AGAINST. They were eagerly awaited, as tickets for the evening sold out very quickly. The band was to be part of the 2020 edition of Festivoix. Tim McIlrath noted that the band hadn’t been in Quebec for a long time (their last visit was in April 2022, in fact.) The front of the Scène du Fleuve Loto-Québec was packed to the rafters. 

For their first show of the season, Tim is in seduction mode. He tells us that every time they come to play in the province, they get an incredible dose of love. He even managed to name a few towns they’ve visited in recent years, such as Rimouski and Jonquière. He even said: « The reason we keep coming back to Quebec Is All Because of You » before starting this anthology piece. 

RISE AGAINST’s performance was full of energy and emotion, with highlights such as Satellite, The Good Left Undone, Help Is on the Way, I Don’t Want to Be Here Anymore, Re-Education, Hero of War (a little tear here, thinking of how many times I listened to this song while my boyfriend was in Afghanistan) before finishing strongly with Give It All and Savior.

The first punk rock evening of the 2024 edition of FESTIVOIX was a success. Stay tuned for more pictures and reports.
