Voici mon petit top bref mais intense, à l’image de mon année 2023.
UN groupe – J’ai découvert TESSERACT il y a environ trois ans et depuis ce temps j’écoute et je réécoute toute leur discographie, puisque mon chum et mon fils m’ont donné les albums Sonder et Polaris et que j’ai écouté Altered State en boucle sur Spotify. (Au fait, si vous me trouvez une copie matérielle de ce dernier, je vous l’achète). Pour moi TESSERACT est une valeur sûre, dont je ne me lasse pas. J’aime la voix (les deux voix je devrais dire), la complexité, le génie de la composition, la perfection de la production. Le talent musical des Britanniques, que voulez-vous!
UN album – Cette année, il va de soi que c’est le récent album de TESSERACT, War of Being. On suit un chemin familier, mais c’est ce qui fait que j’aime bien. Beaucoup.

UN show – Vous aurez donc deviné que ça fait un bout de temps que je souhaitais voir TESSERACT en show, et j’ai eu ma chance le 17 octobre, à Montréal, dans une très belle salle (Théâtre Beanfield, pour ne pas le nommer). Un aller-retour avec mon ami François non seulement pour voir le show mais aussi pour le photographier. Rodé au quart de tour, professionnel au max, le summum de la perfection. WOW, j’étais vraiment heureuse!
UN festival – Je laisse au FEQ ce qui lui revient, mais cette année je tiens à faire mention d’ENVOL & MACADAM, puisque c’est un fest d’automne qui existe depuis 25 ans et qui est de plus en plus connu, et avec raison. En 2023 c’était à l’Agora, une belle place qui reprend ses droits en tant que scène, mais je dois admettre que je préfère l’Îlot Fleurie, le terrain sous les bretelles d’autoroute. Crasse à souhait et parfait pour la photo épique.
UNE découverte… non SIX découvertes – Dans cette catégorie je regroupe la dose de fuzz et de disto que j’ai reçue en allant voir 1000MODS, TRU§H et SUBSUN (ces trois à La Source), et BOOTLEGGER, EARTH ALTAR et SUN BELOW (ceux-là au Scanner). Merci pour le buzz guys!

Here’s my top 5 for 2023, as brief and intense as my year was.
ONE band – I discovered TESSERACT about three years ago, and since then I’ve been listening to their entire discography over and over again, since my spouse and my son gave me the Sonder and Polaris albums, and I’ve been listening to Altered State on a loop on Spotify. (By the way, if you can find me a physical copy of the latter, I’ll buy it). For me, TESSERACT is a sure bet, and I can’t get enough of it. I love the voice (I should say both voices from both singers), the complexity, the genius of the songwriting, the perfection of the production. The musical talent of the British, you name it!
ONE album – This year, of course, it’s TESSERACT’s recent album, War of Being. The path is a familiar one, but that’s why I like it. A lot.
ONE show – As you may have guessed, I’ve been wanting to see TESSERACT in concert for a while now, and I got my chance on October 17th, in Montreal, in a beautiful venue (Théâtre Beanfield, if you want to know). A round trip with my friend François not only to see the show, but also to shoot it. Perfectly polished, professional to the max, the epitome of perfection. WOW, I was so happy!
ONE festival – I’ll give the FEQ its due, but this year I’d like to speak of ENVOL & MACADAM, since it’s a fall fest that’s been around for 25 years and it’s getting more and more exposure, and with good reason. In 2023, it took place at the Agora, a beautiful venue that’s being reclaimed as a stage, but I have to admit I prefer the Îlot Fleurie, under the freeway ramps. Gritty as can be and perfect for epic photography.
One revelation… no, SIX revelations – In this category I put together the dose of fuzz and distortion I got from seeing 1000MODS, TRU§H and SUBSUN (all three at La Source), and BOOTLEGGER, EARTH ALTAR and SUN BELOW (at the Scanner). Thanks for the buzz guys!

ALBUMS DE L’ANNÉE
1 – BLINK 182 – One More Time…
J’attendais cet album avec impatience! Le retour de Tom Delonge dans Blink182 a réjoui plusieurs fans. Ils sont revenus en force avec cet album cette année. +++ I’ve been looking forward to this album! Tom Delonge’s return to Blink182 delighted many fans. They’re back in force with this album this year.
2 – BEARTOOTH – The Surface
Cet album fait définitivement partie de mes albums les plus écoutés en 2023 avec aucun skip. Toutes les chansons ont leur petit quelque chose qui fait que je ne me tanne pas d’écouter l’album en répétition. +++ This album is definitely one of my most listened-to albums of 2023 with no skips. All the songs have that little something that keeps me listening to the album on repeat.
3 -STORY OF THE YEAR – Tear Me to Pieces
Ça faisait un moment que je n’avais pas entendu parlé de Story of the Year avant la sortie de la chanson “Real Life”, qui figure sur leur nouvel album. Celle-ci m’a donné le goût d’en entendre plus. Cet album me ramène à leurs sources, avec des touches plus modernes. +++ I hadn’t heard much about Story of the Year for a while before the release of the song « Real Life », which features on their new album. It made me want to hear more. This album takes me back to their roots, with more modern influences.
4 – MEET ME @ THE ALTAR – Past, Present, Future
Cet album du trio féminin Meet me @ the Altar est une belle découverte de l’année. Cet album dégage une belle énergie du début à la fin et m’apporte une “vibe” générale super positive! +++ This album by the female trio Meet me @ the Altar is one of the year’s great discoveries. The album exudes energy from start to finish, and gives me a super-positive overall vibe!
5 – ANTI-FLAG – Lies They Tell Our Children
Malgré les récents événements qui ont menés à la séparation du band, “Lies They Tell Our Children” reste un des albums que j’ai écouté a répétition à sa sortie. L’énergie dans la musique ainsi que la force des paroles m’ont tout de suite accroché, sans compter les nombreuses collaborations avec des artistes que j’adore. +++ Despite the recent events that led to the band’s split, « Lies They Tell Our Children » remains one of the albums I listened to repeatedly when it was released. The energy in the music and the strength of the lyrics immediately hooked me, not to mention the many collaborations with artists I adore.
CHANSONS DE L’ANNÉE
1 – BLINK 182 – One More Time
Bien que j’ai déjà mentionné cet album dans mes albums de l’année, je ne peux pas passer à côté de nommer cette chanson en soi. La chanson elle-même dégage une émotion, qui s’intensifie encore plus quand tu connais l’histoire de Blink182. Pour moi, c’est définitivement la chanson #1 de 2023. +++ Although I’ve already mentioned this album in my albums of the year, I can’t pass up naming this song per se. The song itself exudes emotion, which intensifies even more when you know Blink182’s story. For me, it’s definitely the #1 song of 2023.
2 – SUM41 – Landmines
Avant même d’apprendre que Sum41 fera sa tournée d’adieux en 2024, cette chanson faisait partie de mon top. J’ai très hâte d’entendre l’album qui vient avec et qui promet un peu de tout pour tous les fans de Sum 41. +++ Even before I heard that Sum41 would be doing their farewell tour in 2024, this song was on my top list. I can’t wait to hear the album that comes with it, which promises a little bit of everything for all Sum 41 fans.
3 – FOUR YEAR STRONG – Dead End Friend
J’ai été agréablement surprise quand j’ai appris par hasard que Four Year Strong avait sorti une nouvelle single. Four Year Strong a toujours une belle évolution dans toutes leurs chansons et “Dead End Friend” n’en fait pas exception. +++ I was pleasantly surprised when I heard by chance that Four Year Strong had released a new single. Four Year Strong always have a beautiful evolution in all their songs and « Dead End Friend » is no exception.
4 – THE STORY SO FAR – Big Blind
Une belle énergie pour cette nouvelle chanson de “The Story So Far”. On voit qu’ils reviennent avec un son plus actuel, mais tout autant percutant. +++ Great energy for this new song from « The Story So Far ». We can see that they’re back with a more contemporary sound, but just as hard-hitting.
5 – NECK DEEP – It Won’t Be Like This Forever
J’ai hésité entre les 4 chansons de Neck Deep sorties en 2023 pour laquelle se retrouverait dans mon Top 5 et je crois que j’irais avec celle-ci. Je pense que Neck Deep nous présentent quelque chose de plus actuel, mais avec la petite touche de leurs débuts qui me manquait dans leur dernier album. +++ I hesitated between the 4 Neck Deep songs released in 2023 as to which one would make my Top 5, and I think I’ll go with this one. I think Neck Deep present us with something more current, but with the little touch of their beginnings that I missed in their last album.
Toutes ces singles annoncent que 2024 risque d’être une grosse année pour moi musicalement! +++ All these singles mean that 2024 is likely to be a big year for me musically!

1 – GREEN DAY | FEQ – Juillet 2023
…Ainsi que tout le FEQ 2023! Moi qui, habituellement, prend ma passe du FEQ seulement pour les quelques soirs qui m’intéressent. Cette année, je n’ai manqué pratiquement aucun soir et j’y ai presque toujours trouvé mon compte! Mon coup de coeur cette année a toutefois été la soirée de Green Day. +++ As well as the entire FEQ 2023! I usually only take my FEQ pass for the few nights that interest me. This year, I didn’t miss a single evening, and I almost always got my money’s worth! My favorite night of the year, however, was the Green Day evening.
2 – DIVERS | FESTIVAL MUSIC 4 CANCER – Septembre 2023
Je n’ai malheureusement pas eu l’occasion d’assister à toute la fin de semaine et de voir Rancid. Parcontre, j’ai eu la chance de photographier ce festival pour la première fois! La soirée du samedi regroupait plusieurs de mes bands coup de coeur, tel que : GOB, IllScarlett, The Creepshow ou Ten Foot Pole. +++ Unfortunately, I didn’t get to attend the whole weekend and see Rancid. However, I did get the chance to photograph the festival for the first time! Saturday’s evening featured several of my favorite bands, including GOB, IllScarlett, The Creepshow and Ten Foot Pole.
3 – SILVERSTEIN (MISERY MADE ME TOUR) – L’impérial BELL – Mars 2023

J’ai rarement manqué un spectacle de Silverstein quand ils sont de passage à Québec et je crois que je ne me tannerai jamais de les voir. À chaque fois, je ne suis jamais déçue. En plus, j’ai fait plusieurs belles découvertes avec les première parties que je n’avais jamais vraiment pris le temps d’écouter auparavant. +++ With Dayseeker, SeeYouSpaceCowboy & One Step Closer.
I’ve rarely missed a Silverstein show when they’re in Quebec City, and I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of seeing them. I’m never disappointed. In addition, I’ve made several wonderful discoveries with the opening acts that I’d never really taken the time to listen to before.
4 – A WILHELM SCREAM AVEC FULLCOUNT | L’Anti – Décembre 2023
On peut dire que le party était au rendez-vous à l’Anti ce soir-là. A Wilhelm Scream est un band que j’adore depuis déjà plusieurs années, mais que je n’avais jamais eu l’occasion de voir en show. On peut dire que j’ai été bien initiée et ça m’a replongé dans une écoute active de ce band. +++ It’s no surprise to hear that the party was on at the Anti that evening. A Wilhelm Scream is a band I’ve loved for years, but had never had the chance to see live. I guess you could say I’ve been well introduced to the band, and it’s got me actively listening to them again.
5 – MODSUN (God Save The Teen Tour) | Theatre Corona – Mars 2023
Avec Stand Atlantic & Pardyalone.
Un show haut en émotions ! Bien que j’achetais principalement mes billets pour Stand Atlantic, j’aime bien ModSun et je n’avais jamais eu l’occasion de le voir en spectacle avant. Pardyalone a été une de mes découvertes de l’année, même si sa musique sort complètement de ce que j’écoute habituellement. ModSun nous a amené son lot d’émotions également dans ses chansons suite à sa récente rupture avec Avril Lavigne. L’amour et le soutien que la foule lui a apporté était incroyable à voir. +++ With Stand Atlantic & Pardyalone.
An emotional show! Although I mainly bought my tickets for Stand Atlantic, I like ModSun and had never had the chance to see him live before. Pardyalone was one of my discoveries of the year, even if his music is completely different from what I usually listen to. ModSun also brought us his share of emotions in his songs following his recent break-up with Avril Lavigne. The love and support he received from the crowd was incredible to see.
BAND PROMETTEUR DE L’ANNÉE
Dans cette catégorie, je tiens à souligner un band qui a fait ses débuts en 2023 et qui, selon moi, a ce qu’il faut pour aller loin! Bien que plusieurs bands ont capté mon attention, celui qui se démarque pour moi est PINE CREEK ACADEMY. Depuis la sortie de leur première single en début d’année, ils ont à leur actif 5 singles et un EP qui rejoignent plus de 5 000 auditeurs mensuels sur Spotify. Je crois qu’ils ont la qualité et la motivation nécessaire pour continuer.

TOP 3 DECOUVERTES LOCALES 2023
Bands locaux qui, à ma connaissance, ont débuté en 2023 et qui ont marqué mes découvertes musicales. +++ Local bands that, as far as I know, started out in 2023 and have made their mark on my musical discoveries.
1 – VIOLENCE CITY
Que j’ai découvert via les réseaux sociaux et Spotify. Je n’ai pas eu l’occasion de les voir en spectacle encore, mais j’aurai prochainement la chance de partager la scène avec eux et, espérons le, de les photographier en 2024. +++ I discovered them via social networks and Spotify. I haven’t had the chance to see them live yet, but I’ll soon have the chance to share the stage with them and, hopefully, photograph them in 2024.
2 – FUMIGÈNES
Que j’ai également découvert via les réseaux sociaux à la base, mais que j’ai eu l’occasion de voir en spectacle deux fois, entre autre lors de l’After Party d’Envol et Macadam au Scanner. +++ I also discovered them via social networks, but had the opportunity to see him live twice, at the Envol et Macadam After Party at Le Scanner.
3 – MID DIVERS
Que j’ai découvert lors du Mini-Wild 2023 et que j’ai immédiatement adoré. +++ I first heard about it at Mini-Wild 2023 and immediately loved it.
J’aimerais faire une mention spéciale a PINE TREE CATHEDRAL qui, malgré qu’ils n’ont pas débuté en 2023, ont fait partie de mes découvertes personnelles de l’année lorsque je l’ai ai vu en spectacle en première partie de HIPSHOT à la Source de la Martinière. +++ I’d like to make a special mention to PINE TREE CATHEDRAL who, although they didn’t debut in 2023, were one of my personal discoveries of the year when I saw them opening for HIPSHOT at La Source de la Martinière.

GENEVIEVE OUELLET TOP 5
J’adore la fin de l’année, car c’est le temps des bilans. J’adore tout ce qui est statistiques d’écoutes, tops d’albums, de spectacles, revues de l’année. J’écoute tous les podcasts, toutes les chaînes Youtube qui en font. C’est un plaisir pour moi de voir ce que les gens ont aimé. C’est aussi le moment de l’année où, si je me compare, je me rends compte que je suis énormément difficile et que je n’aime rien. Normalement, les passionnés de musique doivent faire des choix déchirants pour réussir à créer un top 5 ou même un top 10. Pour moi c’est le contraire, je dois me creuser la tête et ça représente souvent tout ce que j’ai écouté dans l’année. Donc j’ai décidé de parler de mes écoutes de l’année plutôt que de faire juste un top album. Je ne peux rivaliser avec personne en quantité, mais les chansons qui se retrouvent sur mes listes ont joué sans arrêt. Je suis excessive! Quand j’accroche sur de quoi c’est intensivement et pour toujours. Et bien sûr, il n’y a que du punk rock sur mes listes. Je n’ai pas le temps d’écouter autre chose et j’y retrouve encore aujourd’hui tout ce qui me plait. +++ I love the end of the year, because it’s the time for reviews. I love everything that has to do with listening statistics, top albums, top shows, reviews of the year. I listen to all the podcasts and Youtube channels that do it. It’s a pleasure for me to see what people liked. It’s also the time of year when, if I compare myself, I realize that I’m enormously picky and don’t like anything. Normally, music fans have to make heartbreaking choices to succeed in creating a top 5 or even a top 10. For me it’s the opposite, I have to rack my brains and it often represents everything I’ve listened to in the year. So I decided to talk about what I listened to during the year rather than just do a top album. I can’t compete with anyone in terms of quantity, but the songs on my lists have been playing non-stop. I’m excessive! When I get hooked on something, it’s intensively and forever. And of course, there’s nothing but punk rock on my lists. I don’t have time to listen to anything else, and I still find everything I like there.

LASTKAJ14 – STÅR STÖTT
Top band, top song, top tout et ce, depuis 6 ans! Pas de surprise encore cette année. Ils occupent toute la place avec 36% de mes écoutes sur Spotify. Ils placent la barre tellement haute que peu de bands réussissent à se tailler une place au sommet de mes listes. En 2023, c’est leur dernier EP (mai 2023) Står stött qui monopolise mon top. +++ Top band, top song, top everything, for the last 6 years! No surprise again this year. They occupy the top spot with 36% of my Spotify listening. They set the bar so high that few bands manage to carve out a place for themselves at the top of my lists. In 2023, it’s their latest EP (May 2023) Står stött that hogs my top spot.

4 chansons dans mon top 20, provenant principalement de leur premier full album sorti (26 mai 2023). Un album que j’attendais avec impatience depuis leur split avec Lastkaj 14 en 2021. Un album qui promettait d’être excellent et qui a effectivement été à la hauteur de mes attentes. Punk rock rapide et intense avec cette touche de douceur dans les mélodies que j’adore.
+++ 4 songs in my top 20, mainly from their first full album release (May 26, 2023). An album I’d been looking forward to since their split with Lastkaj 14 in 2021. An album that promised to be excellent, and indeed lived up to my expectations. Fast, intense punk rock with that touch of sweetness in the melodies that I love.
Un autre de mes coups de cœur suédois qui ne cesse de me surprendre! En attendant la sortie de l’album complet en 2024, j’ai abusé des 2 singles Gör som du vill! et surtout Högexplosiv. J’ai été conquise dès la première écoute. Je l’ai écouté TOUTE la nuit ensuite, la perfection! Je m’attendais a de quoi de bon, puisque ce band n’a aucune mauvaise chanson, mais jamais à ce point. J’ai hâte à l’an prochain pour la suite! +++ Another Swedish favorite that never ceases to surprise me! While waiting for the full album to be released in 2024, I’ve been enjoying the 2 singles Gör som du vill! and especially Högexplosiv. I was won over from the very first listen. I listened to it ALL night afterwards, perfection! I was expecting the best, since this band doesn’t have any bad songs, but never this bad. I can’t wait for next year!
ZEBRAHEAD – III.II
L’album vient à peine de sortir (8 décembre) et déjà il joue tous les jours dans mes oreilles et je fredonne les refrains en travaillant. Je suis épaté par ce band et leur style unique, qui ressemble à tout et à rien en même temps. Un des très rares groupes non suedois qui me fait de l’effet de ce temps-ci. Un mélange extrêmement bien dosé avec des voix clean douces et des screams puissants. C’est agressif tout en étant doux et mélodique. +++ The album has only just been released (December 8) and already it’s playing in my ears every day, and I’m humming the choruses as I work. I’m blown away by this band and their unique style, which sounds like everything and nothing at the same time. One of the very few non-Swedish bands that’s making an impression on me these days. An extremely well-balanced mix of soft clean vocals and powerful screams. It’s aggressive yet gentle and melodic.

1 – SLEEP TOKEN – Take me Back to Eden (Angleterre, genres mixtes / England, mixed genres)
Aucune surprise ici, tout le monde était au courant que Take me Back to Eden allait rafler l’or dans mon palmarès. SLEEP TOKEN a dominé l’univers métal en 2023 en fracassant les limites du genre et en hypnotisant les masses. J’ai déjà fait une critique en profondeur de l’album ici donc je ne m’attarderai pas sur mon appréciation musicale, vous pouvez aller lire mes impressions en détail. Au-delà du sans-faute artistique objectif d’un album parfait que j’ai coté 10/10, je vais davantage parler ici de l’aspect subjectif et très personnel de cet album, et de la place que SLEEP TOKEN a pris dans ma vie. Cet album m’a accompagné toute l’année, dans les hauts sublimes et dans les horribles bas-fonds. Je me rappelle la “hype” autour des premiers singles début janvier, la vague d’excitation collective dans le monde métal, comment on retenait tous notre souffle entre chaque nouvelle sortie. Je me rappelle les amitiés indélébiles que j’ai forgées autour de ce groupe, les heures passées sur les forums et dans les groupes de discussion à s’échanger des théories et à analyser les paroles. Je me rappelle l’honneur d’avoir reçu l’album avant sa sortie pour en écrire une critique, le AMA (ask me anything) qu’on a organisé sur le Discord suivant la publication de mon article, et comment notre groupe s’est retrouvé en ligne à minuit pile le 19 mai pour réaliser notre première écoute de TMBTE ensemble. Je me rappelle comment, 36 heures après la sortie de l’album, ma vie comme je la connaissais a été détruite, mes plans pour le futur m’ont étés arrachés, tout ce en quoi je croyais s’est effondré. Je me rappelle les jours, les semaines passées à pleurer sur cet album, comment ces morceaux ont donné nom à ma souffrance, comment cette musique a absorbé ma rage, mon cynisme et ma peine. TMBTE a été un élément essentiel dans mon processus de deuil. Je me rappelle comment c’est grâce à ce groupe que je me suis ouverte à d’autres personnes, comment j’ai recommencé à forger des liens puissants, comment TMBTE a été un tremplin vers l’acceptation, le renouveau, l’amour et le bonheur. Je me rappelle des moments clés passés à chanter ces chansons avec des gens que j’aime par-dessus tout, qui m’ont aidée et m’aident encore aujourd’hui à avancer vers un meilleur avenir. Et à ce jour, en fin d’année, je ne peux qu’être remplie d’admiration et de reconnaissance pour SLEEP TOKEN, pour leurs offrandes qui transcendent le temps, pour leur vulnérabilité, pour leur honnêteté, et pour avoir composé un album qui a changé la trajectoire du métal à jamais. +++ There’s no surprise here, everyone knew Take me Back to Eden would be my number 1 album of 2023. The entire metalverse was conquered by SLEEP TOKEN this year. As they so aptly wrote, they had us in a chokehold. I have reviewed the album over here ( https://www.chicksrockmedia.com/js_albums/take-me-back-to-eden/ ) so I won’t go in depth again about the musical genius of this record. What I will talk about, however, is the personal aspect of this release. How TMBTE became enmeshed with my life in 2023, with the most thrilling highs and the bottom-of-the-barrel lows. I remember the hype around the first singles in early January, how SLEEP TOKEN took the metal world by storm, how we all collectively held our breath waiting for the next track to drop. I remember the sincere friendships I forged around this band, the people I met on discussion boards and in Discord groups, the hours we spent writing lore together and trading lyric analysis back and forth. I remember how honored I was to receive an advanced copy of the record for review. I remember the AMA (ask me anything) we organized on the Discord following my review, and the listening party we participated in, logged in chat at midnight sharp on May 19th so we could listen to the album for the first time together and share that milestone. I remember how, a mere 36 hours after the release of the album, my life fell apart; how everything I believed in and held dear was ripped away from me and torn to shreds, how the future I’d envisioned for myself was laid lifeless at my feet. I remember the days, the weeks, I spent sobbing over this album, how each track held space for the depth of my suffering, for my rage, for my cynicism, for my distress. TMBTE was an integral part of my grief process. I remember how it’s through SLEEP TOKEN I managed to open myself up to incredible people, how I let them in; how my passion for this album allowed me to open my heart again; to step into acceptance, joy, happiness and love again. I remember singing these very songs with people I love from the bottom of my heart, how our voices together healed my wounds one shared moment at a time, and how beautiful my life is today thanks to this. On the cusp of the new year, I’m left with a deep feeling of awe and gratitude for SLEEP TOKEN’s existence. I am thankful for this band’s transcendental offerings, for their rawness, for their honesty, and for having had the chance to witness metal history in the making.
2 – THE OCEAN – Holocene (Allemagne, métal progressif / Germany, progressive metal)
Ma première rencontre avec THE OCEAN s’est produite en en 2022 alors que le collectif ouvrait pour KATATONIA et je vais être franche: je n’ai rien compris! À ce moment, je n’étais pas prête pour ce groupe. Je n’ai pas aimé la performance du tout, je n’étais pas rendue là. Ils m’ont quand même marquée, ceci dit. Lorsque j’ai vu qu’ils sortaient un nouvel album en 2023, par curiosité, je l’ai essayé. Pour la blague, en fait. Je m’attendais à ne pas aimer ça sur CD non plus. Quand je vous dit que Holocene m’a mise sur le cul tellement j’ai été surprise! J’ai été engloutie par ce longjeu. J’étais incapable de le déposer. Dès que l’album se terminait, je le repartais parce que j’avais l’impression que peu importe le nombre d’écoutes, il me restait des éléments à décrypter. Ce métal progressif posé, réfléchi, intellectuel et subtil, est bourré de petits trésors. Il ne me reste plus qu’à revoir THE OCEAN en concert, maintenant que je les comprends. Je veux me racheter! +++ My first encounter with THE OCEAN was when they opened for KATATONIA in 2022. I’ll be so honest here: I hated the show. I did not understand it. I just stared, uncomfortable, not knowing what to do with myself as the band’s strange performance and dense prog metal unfurled itself before me. I wasn’t ready for them. The experience marked me enough though, that when I saw the band would release a new album in 2023, I wanted to try it. For the joke, I thought, fully expecting to dislike the audio version too and discard the collective for good. Instead I fell in love with Holocene. This record swallowed me up, became an obsession for several weeks and gave me one of my deepest and most interesting musical experiences of the year. Holocene is a record I could listen to 100 times (and I have) and I still would have things left to learn about it. This album beckons me, reels me in over and over. As soon as it ends, I feel compelled to start it again. I can’t get enough of the rich, thoughtful, deliberate and intellectual progressive pieces. I need to see THE OCEAN in concert again to redeem myself, now that I understand them better.
3 – SPIRITBOX – THE FEAR OF FEAR (Canada, métalcore / Canada, metalcore)
J’attendais le nouvel EP de SPIRITBOX avec impatience et l’attente a valu le coup. Ce groupe sont des experts de l’anticipation. Ils nous ont nourris au compte-goutte pendant des mois, avec une chanson, un vidéo de visualisation, puis des bandes annonces, des 10 secondes sortis par-ci par-là pour nous titiller. Puis les chansons complètes sont tombées: l’escalade dans la lourdeur et l’agressivité des morceaux était exquise, de l’accrocheuse et dynamique The Void qui rappelle le métal des années 2000, jusqu’à l’hyper lourde, agressive et syncopée Cellar Door qui a fait taire les détracteurs du groupe. Les fans n’en pouvaient plus d’attendre, et ça a mené à une sortie d’album impeccable. Quelle réussite, avec un vidéo grand déploiement pour chaque chanson, des vinyles édition limitée magnifiques, et une nomination aux Grammys comme meilleure performance métal amplement méritée. Le groupe canadien maîtrise parfaitement les deux côtés de la médaille du métalcore: beauté éthérée des chansons douces, mélodies magnifiques au chant clair, paroles imagées et poignantes; tout ça opposé à la violence dissonante des chansons lourdes qui pigent dans le djent et le math rock, des rythmes cassés et robotiques, comme une machine organique sauvage. De la variété au pied carré! +++ SPIRITBOX’s new EP was one of my most anticipated releases of the year and it did not disappoint. These guys are suspense experts. They drip-fed us information about The Fear of Fear for months, dropping The Void and its visualizer over the summer first. Then they kept teasing us with 10 second clips out of context, trailers, little interviews and images. The full songs dropped, and the intensity progression from The Void’s bright and catchy 2000s feel into the ridiculously heavy beatdown of a track that is Cellar Door was so satisfying. The hype was real. SPIRITBOX nailed the release cycle. They gave us a full video for each track, gorgeous limited edition vinyl presses, and in the end it earned them a Grammy nomination for Jaded which they should have won in my opinion. This Canadian band uniquely masters both sides of the metalcore coin: they have the ethereal beauty of their calmer, more melodious songs, with the breathy clean vocals and their poignant lyrics; and on the other side, they offer raw violence; djenty math rock rhythmic changes that destabilize the listener and make us rabid. Variety is the name of the game, and The Fear of Fear exceeded expectations.
4 – ATLASES – BETWEEN THE DAY & I (Finlande, post-métal / Finland, post-metal)
Je ne sais pas qui étaient derrière la console dans le studio avec ATLASES mais je vous le dis, Between the Day & I est le fantasme de tout fanatique de son. La production de ce longjeu est sublime. ATLASES est mon coup de cœur prod de l’année. Il y a quelque chose d’addictif et de profondément confortable dans l’univers sonore de cet album. Les musiciens remplissent tout l’espace; l’acoustique est audible; les instruments sont chaleureux et pleins, ronds et texturés. J’ai l’impression de rêver en écoutant cet album, de flotter. Et quand les chansons décident de tirer dans le lourd? C’est une lourdeur comme si on coulait au fond d’un océan de goudron, au lieu de la lourdeur violente et agressive à laquelle on pourrait s’attendre. ATLASES ont tous les bons éléments séparément: du groove, de la bonne basse, des éléments électroniques, du chant “punché”; mais c’est la synergie dans la prod qui m’impressionne le plus. L’ensemble est plus que la somme de ses parties. +++ I’ll just come out and say it: Between the Day & I is a production nerd’s wet dream. For real. This album’s sound is sublime. There is something addictive in the quality of the soundscapes achieved here, in how full the room feels, how layered the tracks are, how lush each instrument sounds. This album is round and dreamy, it’s floaty, and even when it gets heavy? The weight feels more like sinking down an ocean of thick tar than the sensation of being pummeled into the ground like other heavy bands sound like. I simply adore the way this album feels. ATLASES brings the groove, the bass, the synths, the electronics, the vocal back and forth between two singers, everything you could want, really. But what blew me away was the synergy once recorded, the thoughtful refinement of how this was mastered and mixed. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
5. CURRENTS – THE DEATH WE SEEK (États-Unis, métalcore / United States, metalcore)
La 5ième position de mon top a été une décision difficile. J’avais plusieurs albums qui se battaient pour cette dernière mention. ORBIT CULTURE, BLACKBRAID, KATATONIA, la compétition était rude. Finalement, c’est CURRENTS qui l’emporte. Ce qui m’a fait pencher pour ce groupe au final, c’est à quel point cet album est devenu mon longjeu passe-partout de l’année. Au sens où, si je voulais écouter de la musique mais que je ne savais pas quoi choisir? Par défaut, je mettais The Death we Seek, et à tout coup ça satisfaisait mon besoin. J’étais toujours dans le mood pour CURRENTS. Leur metalcore est efficace, droit au but. Les chansons sont simples mais soignées. Les mélodies sont accrocheuses et toujours les bienvenues. Je ne me tanne pas. Cette versatilité dans la simplicité, cette éloquence épurée, ça rentre tout le temps. +++ The 5th place in my yearly top was heavily contested. Multiple records duked it out in my brain to see who would earn my final award. ORBIT CULTURE, BLACKBRAID, KATATONIA were well deserving of the spot. But in the end, it’s CURRENTS who secured the win, for the simple fact that The Death we Seek was my go-to in-between album all year ‘round. By that I mean, whenever I felt like listening to music but didn’t have a specific band in mind? When I didn’t know what I wanted? The answer was always “well, let’s throw on some CURRENTS!” and that strategy never failed. They filled in the gaps between my other obsessions. The tracks are elegantly simple, they hook you in. Direct, accessible and well refined ideas; catchy melodies; fully realized musicians; it just works, you know? This album sparks joy.

GAEREA – DORMANT
Avez-vous déjà été émus devant une œuvre d’art? Ce sentiment envahissant comme si l’artiste plongeait sa main dans notre poitrine et nous agrippait les entrailles. C’est cette sensation que m’a donné le vidéo du dernier single de GAEREA, Dormant. Ces musiciens masqués frôlent déjà la folie et l’extase sur scène, en portant des masques plein visage sans ventilation qui les forcent à presque se noyer dans leur propre sueur durant leurs performances. Ils repoussent leurs limites physiques sur scène pour nous offrir la performance la plus vraie et à fleur de peau possible. Et bien pour le vidéo de Dormant, ils ont poussé encore plus loin leur processus artistique. Ce que vous regardez, ce sont près de 9 minutes de simulation de noyade endurées par le chanteur du groupe, tout ça parce qu’il est entièrement dévoué à son art. Des tonnes et des tonnes d’eau glaciale s’effondrent sur lui en un kaléidoscope visuel hypnotisant, pendant qu’il souffre magnifiquement, qu’il se débat, qu’il résiste, qu’il se retient de fuir, qu’il endure; tout pour son art, sa musique, son groupe, ce en quoi il croit. C’est magnifique. J’en retenais mon souffle avec le chanteur tant j’étais absorbée. Les entrevues avec le directeur du vidéo, qui explique notamment comment lui et son équipe ont construit la machine à noyade ainsi que les risques associés à un tel tournage, me font aimer le projet encore plus. GAEREA vivent leurs œuvres pleinement, physiquement; ils sont habités par leur vision et ça se voit. +++ You know that feeling when you’re moved by a true work of art? The awe and shock, as if the artist themselves reached inside of your chest and grabbed your insides with both hands? That’s the emotion GAEREA’s Dormant video made me feel. These masked motherfuckers are crazy, and crazy dedicated to their art too. It wasn’t enough for them to wear cloth masks that fully cover their faces on stage, so they essentially waterboard themselves with their own sweat during their performances in order to channel raw anxiety and anguish into their music. No, this time they decided to dive even deeper into their exploration of pain and all the intense emotions tied to it. Dormant is almost 9 minutes of GAEREA’s singer getting willingly tortured by tons and tons of glacial water pouring over him continuously, with no breaks to breathe, and we get to witness all of his reactions. The fear, the struggle, the self-control needed to stay under the water and to not flee, the display of endurance, the pure suffering for the sake of one’s art. This is beauty to me. And the interview with the video director, who explains in detail how his team built the waterboarding rig and all the challenges of such a video shoot, made me love the artistic process even more. GAEREA is a band that embodies their art fully, and for a few minutes here you get to live, breathe and gasp said art alongside their leader.

IOTUNN – MISTLAND
En 2021, les danois de IOTUNN s’étaient taillés une place de choix sur nos podium des tops de fin d’année, figurant à la 2ième place de mon propre top et la 1ière place dans le top de mon invité spécial. En 2023, le groupe est revenu le temps d’un single accompagné de son vidéo signé Costin Chiorean, pour nous rappeler qu’il n’y a pas grand band qui crée du death métal mélodique progressif aussi excitant et aussi frais qu’eux! Mistland est une chanson brillante, éblouissante de par sa lourdeur, son réfléchi et sa beauté. J’ai hâte de voir ce que 2024 nous réserve suite à cet avant-goût électrisant! +++ If yall remember back in 2021, IOTUNN featured heavily in mine and my special guest’s top 5s of the year, grabbing my 2nd place and my special’s guest number 1 spot respectively. In 2023, the world’s most promising progressive melodeath project returned with their single Mistland. With its gorgeous video penned by the famous Costin Chiorean, this single clearly shows IOTUNN aren’t done elevating their genre. Mistland is vibrant, full of life; it’s as carefully thought out as it is heavy. Nothing in this track is unnecessary, frivolous or out of place. I cannot wait to see what 2024 has in store for this band.
SORTIE QUÉBÉCOISE DE L’ANNÉE / LOCAL QUÉBEC RELEASE OF THE YEAR
DEATH GLOOM – DEATH GLOOM (Québec, Canada, doom & black métal)
Né des cendres de mon projet québécois préféré, feu WRATH OF ECHOES, DEATH GLOOM impressionne avec son premier EP éponyme. L’ambiance doom que j’aime tant, sombre et glauque, lente et lourde à souhait, est bien présente; et les aspects black métal donnent à chaque morceau l’énergie et la poussée vers l’avant nécessaire. En plus on est sur des thèmes lyriques et visuels inspirés de Lovecraft et de l’horreur cosmique, que puis-je demander de plus. Cet EP est un petit bijou dont je ne me tanne pas. Je vous encourage vivement à passer par le bandcamp du groupe pour supporter un projet local de haute qualité et très prometteur. N’arrêtez jamais de faire de la musique les gars, vous faites partie de la richesse du Québec! +++ Risen from the ashes of my all-time favorite Québec project, rip WRATH OF ECHOES, DEATH GLOOM doesn’t disappoint with their first EP. Fans of doom metal will find their beloved doom atmosphere in here: dark, brooding, heavy, slumbering melodies; nicely complimented by an energetic black metal twist. The five tracks on this EP are one knockout success after the other. The band uses visual and lyrical themes inspired by Lovecraftian horror, aka my favorite horror genre, so I was instantly sold. This EP is a massively underrated diamond in the Québecois musical sphere. Visit the band’s bandcamp, I promise you won’t regret it! And to the DEATH GLOOM guys, if you read this: please never stop making music. Yall are one of Québec’s treasures.

OLD RUINS – ALWAYS HEADING EAST (Allemagne, black métal / Germany, black metal)
Vous ne connaissez probablement pas le groupe allemand OLD RUINS, mais si vous êtes le moindrement adepte de black métal? On corrige le tir tout de suite! Il y a tellement d’éléments que j’aime dans leur premier album en carrière: c’est une mine d’or. Always Heading East nous sert 45 minutes de black métal intense qui fait monter le rythme cardiaque en flèche. Mais ce n’est pas l’intensité typique black métal, pas le froid et l’image cliché d’une forêt enneigée à laquelle on est habitués. Non, les gars de OLD RUINS se sont clairement amusés comme des fous dans le studio car leur musique a une légèreté et une joie de vivre audible. Déjà, les paroles sont toutes basées sur la série de jeux vidéos Diablo. C’est geek et en tant que geek moi-même? Ça me fait plaisir! Les choix rythmiques, la technique vocale et l’instrumentation rappellent des groupes comme VREID, EINHERJER et ENSLAVED en version accélérée. Par-dessus tout, OLD RUINS est un groupe de guitare. Si vous aimez les solos virtuoses débordant de créativité, longs d’une minute ou deux et qui vous amènent à plein d’endroits différents? Vous êtes à la bonne adresse. Ne passez pas à côté de cette nouvelle expérience! +++ It’s likely you’ve not heard of Germany’s OLD RUINS yet. But if you’re a black metal fan? You gotta fix this immediately! There are so many good things packed tightly in this band’s first full length. Always Heading East delivers a blistering 45 minutes of non-stop blood pumping black metal, but with such a cheeky joyful attitude, it’s miles away from the dreary cold winter forests black metal cliché. You can tell the musicians had a tremendous amount of fun while recording. The lyrics are based on the Diablo video game series, with dialog basically lifted right from the games. It’s nerdy, it’s delightful, I love it. The rhythms, vocal choices and instrumentation are reminiscent of bands like VREID, EINHERJER and ENSLAVED, but with a speedy twist. Above all else, OLD RUINS is a guitar band. If you love creative over-a-minute-long solos with twists and turns and all the virtuosity you could hope for? Then this band is for you. Do not miss out on this debut!

Et mention honorable au spectacle de WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, BLACKBRAID, GAEREA & HOAXED à Montréal au Théâtre Fairmount le 5 octobre 2023. Vous me voyez venir. Et oui, GAEREA est mon groupe “live” de l’année. Ces portuguais masqués au black métal décapant et peaufiné est vraiment incomparable en concert. Peu importe l’affiche sur laquelle ils jouent, c’est garanti qu’ils vont voler la vedette. Chacun des musiciens ont un magnétisme, un charisme et une intensité sur scène une coche au-dessus de toute la scène black métal en ce moment. Je n’ai envie que d’une chose en 2024: c’est de revoir GAEREA autant de fois que possible. +++ Honorable mention to the WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, BLACKBRAID, GAEREA & HOAXED show in Montréal at the Fairmount Theater on October 5th. Yeah you’ve caught on by now. My show of the year is every time I saw GAEREA. Listen, there is not another live band on their level currently. The Vortex Society’s live game is miles above what you’d expect from a typical black metal show. The Portuguese masked group will invariably steal the show no matter who they open for. They’ve opened for legends this year and they still crushed. Their collective charisma, their presence, their mesmerizing masks and visuals, the way they move, their unhinged intensity, there really is no competition. I have just one wish for 2024, and it’s to catch them live again as often as possible.

Moi qui suis une fan finie d’Amorphis, je me retrouve à vivre le même fatal crush assumé mais de l’univers d’Orbit Culture. Ils nous livrent un album atmosphérique, mélancolique, mais solide et puissant : je suis comblée! J’attends la tournée 2024 avec envie ! +++ If there’s one melodic death album that’s torn me to shreds this year, it’s this one. As a die-hard Amorphis fan, I find myself experiencing the same fatal crush, but from the world of Orbit Culture. Their album is atmospheric and melancholy, yet solid and powerful: I’m thrilled! I’m looking forward to the 2024 tour!
2 – BASS DRUM OF DEATH – SAY I WON’T (FAT POSSUM RECORDS)
Un album qui déchire avec ses riffs explosifs de guitare sur un drum qui sonne comme une bombe qui explose ! Les mélodies sont accrocheuses, c’est plus dépouillé et brut que jamais, mais c’est parfait : on sent qu’ils ont trouvé leur son. ++ A kick-ass album with explosive guitar riffs over a drum that sounds like an exploding bomb! The melodies are catchy, it’s more stripped-down and raw than ever, but it’s perfect: you feel they’ve found THEIR sound.

Cet album est une totale incursion spirituelle dans un monde de steppes sibériennes pour une épique ride folk metal. C’est sombre, rythmé, planant ; ça permet de relâcher la pression de notre monde si faux et étourdissant. Depuis sa sortie, il tourne en boucle et me permet de retourner à l’essentiel; 2023 étant une année difficile. +++ I’m a devoted HEILUNG and WARDRUNA fan, so NYTT LAND was a foregone conclusion; done to the bone from the very first notes. This album is a total spiritual incursion into a world of Siberian steppes for an epic folk metal ride. It’s dark, rhythmic, atmospheric; it takes the pressure off our distorted, dizzying world. Since its release, it’s been playing on a loop, allowing me to get back to basics; 2023 being a difficult year for me personally.

C’est sans surprise que cet album lancé le 13 octobre dernier tourne en boucle depuis sa sortie : un live du meilleur album d’Amorphis ! Coïncidant avec la perte d’un être cher il m’accompagne et me donne ce puissant sentiment d’être vivante. Tout y est, le réconfort, la puissance, l’énergie et la destruction du négatif; il a ce fabuleux pouvoir d’attraction qui me tire des ténèbres vers la lumière. La voix de Tomi Joutsen y est à son climax. Merci AMORPHIS ! +++ No surprise that this album, released on October 13, has been on a loop ever since: a live performance of Amorphis’ best album! It came at the same time as the loss of a loved one, and gives me that powerful feeling of being alive. It’s got everything: comfort, power, energy and the destruction of the negative; it’s got this fabulous power of attraction that pulls me out of the darkness into the light. Tomi Joutsen’s voice is at its best. Thank you AMORPHIS!

Amyl and the Sniffers c’est ce groupe de « pub rock – hard rock – hardcore punk – punk rock australien » que je rêvais de voir ici depuis plusieurs années : MYTHIQUE ! Composé de la chanteuse Amy Taylor, du batteur Bryce Wilson, du guitariste Declan Martens et du bassiste Gus Romer. Ils sont les héritiers du mouvement féministe riot grrrl. ! Maintenant : mettez la lecture en pause et regardez…écoutez.. Une prise de calibre olympique réussie par la gang du Festif! +++ Amyl and the Sniffers is that « pub rock – hard rock – hardcore punk – Australian punk rock » band I’ve been dreaming of seeing here for years: MYTHIC! Made up of singer Amy Taylor, drummer Bryce Wilson, guitarist Declan Martens and bassist Gus Romer. They are heirs to the feminist riot grrrl movement! 2 – RANCID (ENVOL ET MACADAM, QUÉBEC)
Sur ma « Ultimate Bucket List » depuis très longtemps ! Que de vieux hits, les gars sont en forme, la soirée est idéale à l’agora du vieux-port, je frissonne de plaisir. Un sans-faute ! +++ On my Ultimate Bucket List for a very long time! All old hits, the guys are in top form, the evening is perfect at the Agora in the Old Port, and I’m shivering with pleasure. A straight shooter!
3 – GBH (L’ANTI BAR ET SPECTACLES, QUÉBEC)
Sans contredit, ce fut une expérience incroyable que de rencontrer ceux qui m’ont accompagné pendant mon adolescence et en furent l’un des groupes phares. C’est indescriptible que d’entendre la foule (composé de jeunes et de moins jeunes fans) s’époumoner à chanter et à danser sur des titres qui rallient plusieurs générations. Quel spectacle : SHOUT The F*** OUT ! Mention spéciale à NIIS que j’ai découvert en première partie : w*o*w !
Without a doubt, it was an incredible experience to meet those who accompanied me during my teenage years and were one of the leading bands of that period. It’s amazing to hear the crowd (made up of young and not-so-young fans) singing and dancing along to songs that unite several generations. What a show: SHOUT The F*** OUT! Special mention to NIIS, who opened for them : w*o*w!

Une prestation parfaite et en tout point : c’est généreux, professionnel et efficace. Quel belle expérience ! +++ A perfect show in many aspect: generous, professional and efficient. What a wonderful experience!
5 – AVATAR (L’IMPÉRIAL BELL, QUÉBEC)
Du pur bonheur que cette soirée, leur cirque metalo-industriel-groovy m’a tellement impressionnée qu’ils se retrouvent dans ce top 5. W*O*W ! +++ Their metal-industrial-groovy circus impressed me so much that they made it into this top 5. W*O*W!

Assurément, l’un de mes meilleurs moments de l’année. +++ technically not my best shot, but for the honor of being able to get on stage during Bro’ Hymn and capture that incredible big love vibe. Definitely one of my best moments of the year.
