BAT SABBATH + ETHEREAL TOMB + BLACK MASTIFF | L’ANTI BAR & SPECTACLES | 29.11.2023

Fan de hardcore, j’aime beaucoup Cancer Bats. Et j’adore le bon vieux Black Sabbath. Mais j’étais plutôt dubitative quand j’ai su que Cancer Bats faisait un hommage à Black Sabbath à leur façon. Il allait donc de soi que j’aille voir ça de plus près pour en juger par moi-même. 

BLACK MASTIFF 
C’est le groupe albertain BLACK MASTIFF qui a ouvert la soirée. Le groupe nous a joué un excellent stoner rock. La voix de Bob Yannakoulias est juste et puissante. Clay Shea (basse) et Allan Harding (batterie) font tous les deux les choeurs et les trois voix s’harmonisent à merveille.

Les gars ont du plaisir à jouer et ça s’entend et se ressent dans leur jeu. Je vous le dis, ça s’écoute tout seul. J’ai d’ailleurs ajouté le groupe à ma playlist “Rock pour le travail” et il risque de m’accompagner également lors de mes roadtrips. 

ETHEREAL TOMB 
Est venu ensuite le tour d’ETHEREAL TOMB, un groupe originaire d’Ontario. ETHEREAL TOMB c’est du doom metal avec des influences plutôt atypiques. En effectuant des recherches, j’ai découvert qu’un des membres est fan de pop punk, alors que le chanteur est hardcore dans l’âme.

Le mixte des genres donne quelque chose de vraiment intéressant. Les gars sont jeunes, mais ils sont clairement doués et ont déjà réussi à définir un son bien à eux. Avec un peu plus d’expérience et en développant leur contact avec le public, ils vont casser la baraque! Un groupe à surveiller.

BAT SABBATH (HOMMAGE À BLACK SABBATH PAR CANCER BATS)
La tête d’affiche de la soirée était le groupe de hardcore torontois CANCER BATS, qui nous a présenté une version bien à eux d’une dizaine de hits du mythique groupe BLACK SABBATH. Je dois avouer que l’extrait que j’avais regardé la veille sur YouTube ne m’avait pas laissé une impression très positive. Heureusement, en show ils ont complètement renversé cette première impression. Ils sont littéralement de la bombe! Ce soir-là, c’était ma première expérience en tant que photographe de concert (on ne parle pas de photos avec téléphone cellulaire, mais avec un vrai appareil) et les gars m’ont rendu la tâche 100 fois plus ardue que je pensais. Ils n’ont pas arrêté de « grouiller-bouger-sauter-courir ». Liam est arrivé sur scène avec une chemise au goût douteux des années 70-80 et une grande cape noire pour « personnifier » Ozzy. Je mets le mot personnifier entre guillemets car c’est ce qui se rapprochait le plus du personnage.

Comme je l’ai mentionné plus tôt, les gars de CANCER BATS n’ont pas « copié » Black Sabbath, ils ne se sont pas non plus déguisés comme le font fréquemment les groupes-hommages. Ils se sont plutôt approprié la musique de Black Sabbath pour nous la rendre à leur façon et j’ai A-DO-RÉ! J’ajouterais qu’à voir la réaction enthousiaste et déchaînée du public de l’Anti, ils ont gagné leur pari. 

Liam, Scott, Mike et Jaye sont des bêtes de scène.

Sous le nom de BAT SABBATH, ils nous ont interprété, dans l’ordre : « Children of the Grave », « Supernaut », « Paranoid », « Iron Man », « N.I.B. », « Electric Funeral », « Symptom of the Universe », « Into the Void », « Fairies Wear Boots » et « Black Sabbath », pour terminer de façon foudroyante avec « War Pigs ». Après une courte pause, le groupe est revenu sous la forme de CANCER BATS et nous a joué trois morceaux.

Cette soirée m’a fait un bien fou! Une fois de plus, j’ai découvert de nouveaux groupes vraiment intéressants. Mais surtout, j’ai été sidérée par l’excellent résultat du pari plutôt risqué qu’a pris CANCER BATS en déployant BAT SABBATH.

As a hardcore fan, I really like CANCER BATS. And I love some good old BLACK SABBATH. But I was rather skeptical when I heard that CANCER BATS were doing a tribute to BLACK SABBATH in their own way. So I had to check it out and see for myself. 

BLACK MASTIFF 
Alberta band BLACK MASTIFF opened the evening. The band played some excellent stoner rock. Bob Yannakoulias’s voice is powerful and accurate. Clay Shea (bass) and Allan Harding (drums) both sing backing vocals, and the three voices harmonize beautifully. The guys are having fun and you can hear and feel it in their playing. I’m telling you, it listens by itself. In fact, I’ve added the band to my « Rock for Work » playlist, and it’s likely to accompany me on my roadtrips too. 

ETHEREAL TOMB 
Next up was ETHEREAL TOMB, a band from Ontario. ETHEREAL TOMB is a doom metal band with rather atypical influences. Doing some research, I discovered that one of the members is a fan of pop punk, while the singer is hardcore at heart. The mix of genres makes for something really interesting. The guys are young, but they’re clearly talented and have already managed to define a sound all their own. With a little more experience and more interaction with the public, they’ll be kicking ass! A band to keep an eye on.

BAT SABBATH (CANCER BATS TRIBUTE TO BLACK SABBATH)
The evening’s headliner was Toronto hardcore band CANCER BATS, who presented us with their own version of a dozen hits by the legendary band BLACK SABBATH. I have to confess that what I had watched on YouTube the day before didn’t leave me with a very positive impression. Fortunately, their live show completely upturned that first impression. They are literally dynamite! That night was my first experience as a concert photographer (we’re not talking about cellphone photos, but with a real camera), and the guys made it 100 times harder than I thought it would be. They were constantly « swarming-moving-jumping-running ». Liam showed up on stage wearing a 70s-80s blouse of dubious taste and a big black cape, to « personify » Ozzy. I put the word personify in quotation marks because it was the closest it could get to the character. As I mentioned earlier, the guys in CANCER BATS don’t « copy » BLACK SABBATH, nor do they dress up as tribute bands often do. Instead, they make BLACK SABBATH’s music their own and give it back to us in their own way, and I couldn’t believe it! I might add that, judging by the enthusiastic and wild reaction of the crowd present at L’Anti, they’ve won their bet. 

Liam, Scott, Mike and Jaye are stage beasts. As BAT SABBATH, they played, in order: “Children of the Grave”, “Supernaut”, “Paranoid”, “Iron Man, “N.I.B.”, “Electric Funeral”, “Symptom of the Universe”, “Into the Void”, “Fairies Wear Boots” and “Black Sabbath”, ending with a striking version of “War Pigs”. After a short break, the band came back as CANCER BATS and played three tracks.

It was a great evening! Once again, I discovered some really interesting new bands. But above all, I was flabbergasted by the excellent results of CANCER BATS’ rather risky gamble in deploying BAT SABBATH.
