On y est, c’est la 26e édition du festival Envol et Macadam. J’y viens en tant que fan depuis tant d’années que je ne me souviens plus la première fois. C’est ma deuxième année ou j’ai le privilège de couvrir le festival pour CHICKS ROCK MEDIA.L’emplacement habituel, l’Îlot Fleurie, n’est pas disponible. Ils ont déménagé tout le volet extérieur à l’Agora du Vieux-Port. Des prestations ont aussi lieu dans plusieurs salles de la ville de Québec (L’Anti, Scanner, Espaces Dalhousie, bar le Quartier de Lune). Le line-up est diversifié. C’est un festival où le mélange des styles est à l’honneur. Un bon mélange de bands uniques qui nous force à ouvrir ses horizons, avec une belle emphase sur les groupes locaux, les gros comme les petits.

Trois jours de spectacles qui débutent le jeudi 14 septembre à L’Anti. Je ne peux malheureusement pas assister aux prestations de TRY AGAIN, DRUNKTANK et TEN FOOT POLE.

Je fais mon entrée, le sourire aux lèvres. Comme toujours lorsque j’entre sur le site d’un spectacle, je ressens ce sentiment satisfaisant d’être à ma place. 

Crisse de belle place! C’est ma première réaction en apercevant la scène. Ce n’est pas la première fois que j’assiste à un spectacle à l’Agora, mais ça fait presque 20 ans. Il est tôt, il n’y a presque personne. Les spectacles sont commencés.

Le premier groupe à se présenter sur scène est NO FACE NO CASE, les gagnants du concours PlanetRox. (MED notre photographe a assisté à leur prestation. Elle a eu la chance d’échanger un peu avec Matyáš le chanteur de la formation. Le band est totalement en amour avec le Canada : depuis leur arrivé ils ont joué en Ontario et au Québec et ils apprécient particulièrement les québécois pour leur gentillesse et leur ouverture. Ils sont impressionnés et promettent de revenir. Coup de foudre!)

Moi, j’arrive pile à l’heure pour HATE IT TOO, le premier band sur ma liste pour cette magnifique fin de semaine. Un band punk rock du bas du fleuve que je suis depuis quelques années. Leurs performances live sont toujours d’une grande qualité. Des mélodies accrocheuses, une basse présente et puissante. Le son est excellent, juste assez fort pour bien ressentir l’intensité du punk rock. On entend bien tous les instruments et les voix. 

Je suis une punk rocker pure et dure, je connais DANCE LAURY DANCE seulement de nom. Band de Québec actif depuis 2007. Il a connu la popularité en 2011, alors qu’il ouvrait sur les Plaines d’Abraham dans le cadre du Festival d’été de Québec pour METALLICA. Un groupe rock, de metal? Même les initiés ne peuvent décrire simplement leur style. Un band avec un son unique. Une petite vibe de glam metal – j’ai des visions de Vince Neil de temps en temps. 😉

C’est leur tournée d’adieu. Ils donnent une prestation énergique et communiquent beaucoup avec la foule.

À la fin, ils remercient les fans, pour toutes ces années, tout en rendant un touchant hommage au fils décédé d’un des membres. #Respect

Le site se remplit, le soleil se couche et le vent se lève. C’est au tour d’un autre band québécois qui n’en est pas à ses premiers spectacles, GROOVY AARDVARK.

Un autre groupe indescriptible, qui a son propre style. Les bands qui sortent de la norme sont à l’honneur cette année. Je connais peu leur répertoire, mais ils font quelques covers de vieux classiques que je connais bien. Comme leur version du « P’tit bonheur »de FÉLIX LECLERC. C’est excellent! Ça me permet de chanter un peu et de me remémorer des souvenirs de mon enfance. 

Ils font aussi leur chanson « Amphibiens » qui incorpore des paroles à la « Trois p’tits chats », chanson enfantine que me chantait ma mère. Au travers, ils incorporent un magnifique solo de percussion à cinq tambours. Une magnifique vibe tribale, très intense. Je suis hypnotisée par le jeu des musiciens, la synchro est parfaite! Wow! Coup de cœur de la soirée pour moi!

20h30– fini le folklore, on a droit à du lourd avec VOIVOD. Fort de leurs 40 ans de carrière, le band n’a plus rien à prouver et les fans sont nombreux pour les accueillir. Ils sont attendus. On apercevait dans la foule beaucoup de gilets du band. Beaucoup de fans de la première heure et j’ai un spécimen avec moi. Le spectacle de ce soir souligne leur quarantième anniversaire justement.

Pour l’occasion, on s’attend à ce que les chansons jouées représentent toutes ces années. Malheureusement, ils font peu de chansons de 1984, 1985. N’étant pas du tout fan du band, je pensais passer la parole à mon mari pour m’assurer d’avoir une review positive et juste pour les fans, mais, même lui est peu impressionné. Malgré une prestation correcte, c’est une petite déception pour lui, mais honnêtement, son avis ne semble pas partagé par les fans et c’est tant mieux.

C’est au tour de MONONC’ SERGE et d’ANONYMUS d’entrer sur scène. Un mélange de musique metal, d’humour, de théâtre, c’est dur à expliquer comme concept. J’ai ma semaine dans le corps, je suis affamée, mais je m’en voudrais de manquer ce spectacle. On convient, mon mari et moi, qu’on restera le temps de 3-4 chansons et on quittera ensuite. 

L’attente me semble interminable. 21h42 – une dizaine de minutes derrière le planning, les cloches sonnent, voici MONONC’ SERGE, habillé en curé.

C’est les 20 ans de l’album L’académie du massacre, avec des titres comme « Le bad trip », « L’âge de bière », « Mourir pour le Canada », « Redoubler ». Il a un humour particulier. Il joue beaucoup avec les mots, les double-sens. Il n’hésite pas à rire d’un peu tout le monde dans le showbiz. Il se moque autant des artistes de la scène québécoise qu’internationale. CÉLINE DION, MARIO PELCHAT, SÉBASTIEN BENOÎT, et même PINK FLOYD. Il s’en prend même au band et à nous, la foule. « Ceux qui viennent pour Mario Pelchat , allez-vous-en! Bon débarras!! »

Je ris beaucoup, mais j’apprécie aussi la musique. Le mélange de l’humour avec le son pesant du band ANONYMUS qui l’accompagne, c’est parfait!

La mise en scène est géniale. Il y a des clowns gonflables, des ballons. C’est drôle, efficace, la musique est bonne, la chimie entre les musiciens est parfaite et MONONC’ SERGE est malade. Quel personnage!!!

L’album a pour thème l’éducation. Ils font un genre de parodie/traduction de la chanson « Another Brick In The Wall », de PINK FLOYD. Ils ont même fait des pancartes avec les paroles pour qu’on puisse chanter avec eux.

Moi qui pensais quitter plus tôt. On reste jusqu’à la fin, on a trop de fun pour partir. 

Le spectacle se termine à 22h40..Ça laisse peu de temps pour aller manger avant le dernier show de la soirée, CHYENEX, qui a lieu au Scanner. On arrive un peu après l’heure, mais on ne manque rien, ce n’est pas encore commencé. On a le temps de se mettre à l’aise, de commander des boissons et de jaser un peu avec la drummeuse du band, Claudia, aussi une Chicks collaboratrice du média.

Son band, CHYENEX (j’apprends ce soir qu’on prononce SHY-E-NEX), fait tranquillement sa place dans la scène pop/punk québécoise. Ensemble depuis deux ans, mais actifs depuis un an, ils ont déjà donné plusieurs shows dans la province. Ils ont deux singles disponibles sur les plateformes de streaming, « Poison » et « It’s My Life ». L’ambiance est définitivement au party. C’est beau l’énergie de la jeunesse. Moi, mon heure est passée, mais je me laisse facilement emporter par la musique et la fougue du band et de la mini foule. Définitivement, un jeune band à suivre. 

Une première journée de festival qui dépasse mes attentes. Du beau temps, du plaisir, des prestations de feu. Du gros calibre pour débuter la fin de semaine. Ça promet pour la suite. Je termine en vous présentant mes coups de cœu ret mescoups de gueule.

Coups de cœur : la qualité et la diversité des bands, le son, le site. Désolé pour les nostalgiques des éditions passées, mais je ne m’ennuie pas de l’Îlot Fleurie. 

Coups de gueule : le choix de bouffe et de boissons, et surtout le prix. Je veux bien comprendre qu’il y a inflation, mais un hot-dog à 5$, c’est abusif!

Here we are, at Envol et Macadam’s 26th edition. I’ve been attending the fest as a fan for so many years that I can’t remember the first time. This is my second year covering the festival for Chicks Rock Media. The usual location, Îlot Fleurie, is not available. The entire outdoor component has been moved to the Agora in the Old Port. Performances also take place in several Quebec City venues (L’Anti, Scanner, Espaces Dalhousie, bar le Quartier de Lune). The line-up is diverse. It’s a festival where the mix of styles is in the spotlight. It’s a good mix of unique bands that forces us to open up our horizons, with a strong emphasis on local acts, both big and small. 

THURSDAY, September 14 (day 1)

The three days of shows kick off on Thursday, September 14 at L’Anti. Unfortunately, I can’t make it to TRY AGAIN, DRUNKTANK, and TEN FOOT POLE.

I enter the venue with a smile on my face. As always when I enter a concert site, I get that satisfying feeling that I belong.

What a beautiful place! That’s my first reaction when I see the venue. It’s not the first time I’ve attended a show at the Agora, but it’s been almost 20 years. It’s early, there’s hardly anyone around. The shows have started. The first band on stage is No Face No Case, winners of the PlanetRox contest. (MED our photographer attended their performance. She had the chance to chat with Matyáš, the band’s singer. The band is totally in love with Canada: since their arrival, they’ve played in Ontario and Quebec, and they’re particularly fond of Quebecers for their kindness and openness. They’re impressed and promise to be back. Love at first sight!)

I arrive just in time for Hate It Too, the first band on my list for this magnificent weekend. A punk rock band from down the river that I’ve been following for a few years now. Their live performances are always of the highest quality. Catchy melodies, present and powerful bass. The sound is excellent, just loud enough to feel the intensity of the punk rock. All the instruments and vocals are clearly audible.

I’m a hardcore punk rocker, so I only know Dance Laury Dance by name, a Quebec City band active since 2007. They first became popular in 2011, when they opened for Metallica on the Plains of Abraham as part of the Festival d’été de Québec. A rock band, a metal band? Even insiders can’t describe their style. A band with a unique sound. A little glam metal vibe – I get Vince Neil flashbacks from time to time 😉

This is their farewell tour. They give an energetic performance and communicate a lot with the crowd. At the end, they thank the fans for all their years, while paying a touching tribute to the late son of one of the members. #Respect

The site fills up, the sun sets and the wind picks up. It’s time for another Quebec band, GROOVY AARDVARK. Another indescribable band with its own style. Bands that stand out from the crowd are in the spotlight this year. I don’t know much about their repertoire, but they do a few covers of old classics that I know well. Like their version of Félix Leclerc’s « Le p’tit bonheur ». It’s excellent! It gives me a chance to sing a little, and brings back memories of my childhood. 

They also play their track « Amphibiens », which incorporates the lyrics to « Trois p’tits chats », a childhood song my mother used to sing to me. Throughout, they incorporate a magnificent five-drum percussion solo. A magnificent, intense tribal vibe. I’m mesmerized by the musicians’ playing, the synchronicity is perfect! Wow! My favorite of the evening!

8:30 pm – Folk songs are over, and we’re treated to something heavy with VOÏVOID. The band has nothing to prove, standing strong on their 40-year-long career, and the fans are out in force to welcome them. They are eagerly awaited. Many of the band’s T-shirts are visible in the crowd. A lot of early fans, and I have a specimen with me. Tonight’s show marks their fortieth anniversary. For the occasion, we expect the setlist to pick from all those years. Unfortunately, they don’t play many songs from 1984 and 1985. Not being a fan of the band at all, I thought I’d hand over to my husband to make sure I got a positive review that was fair to the fans, but even he was unimpressed. Despite a decent performance, it’s a bit of a disappointment for him, but honestly, his opinion doesn’t seem to be shared by the fans, and that’s all for good.

Mononc’ Serge and Anonymus now take the stage. A mix of metal music, humor and theater, it’s hard to explain the concept. My week is in the bag, I’m starving, but I’d hate to miss this show. My husband and I agree that we’ll stay for 3-4 songs and then leave. 

The wait seems interminable. 9:42pm – about ten minutes behind schedule, the bells ring, here comes Mononc’ Serge, dressed as a priest. It’s the 20th anniversary of the album L’académie du massacre, with titles like « Le bad trip », « L’âge de bière », « Mourir pour le Canada », « Redoubler ». He has a particular sense of humor. He plays a lot with words and double meanings. He doesn’t hesitate to laugh at just about everyone in showbiz. He pokes fun at artists from both the Quebec and international scenes. Céline Dion, Mario Pelchat, Sébastien Benoit, even Pink Floyd. He even picks on the band and us, the crowd. 

« Those who are here for Mario Pelchat, go away! Good riddance!!! » I laugh a lot, but I also appreciate the music. The mix of humor with the heavy sound of the supporting band Anonymus is perfect!

The staging is brilliant. There are inflatable clowns and balloons. It’s funny, effective, the music is good, the chemistry between the musicians is perfect and Mononc’ Serge is crazy. What a character!!! The theme of the album is education. They do a sort of parody/translation of Pink Floyd’s « Another Brick In The Wall ». They even made signs with the lyrics so we could sing along.

I thought we’d be leaving sooner. We’re staying until the end, having too much fun to leave. 

The show ends at 10:40 pm – not much time to grab a bite to eat before the last show of the evening, Chyenex, at Le Scanner. We arrive a little after the hour, but we don’t miss a thing – it hasn’t started yet. We got time to make ourselves comfortable, order drinks and chat a little with the band’s drummer, Claudia, also a Chicks Rock Media contributor. Her band, Chyenex (pronounced SHY-E-NEX as I’m learning), is slowly making its mark on the Quebec pop/punk scene. Together for two years, but active for a year, they have already played several shows in the province. Two singles are available on streaming platforms, « Poison » and « It’s My Life ». The atmosphere is definitely party-like. Youthful energy is beautiful. It’s too late for me, but I’m easily carried away by the music and the enthusiasm of the band and the little crowd. Definitely a young band to watch. 

The first day of the festival exceeded my expectations. Beautiful weather, fun, fiery performances. A great way to start the weekend. Promising for what’s to come. I’ll end my review by sharing my highs and lows with you.

Highs: the quality and diversity of the bands, the sound, the venue. Sorry for those nostalgic for past editions, but I don’t miss the Îlot Fleurie. 

Lows: the choice of food and drink, and above all the price. I get that there’s inflation, but a $5 hot dog is ridiculous!
