AETERNAM + WARNING SIGN + SOLEMN VISION | L’ANTI BAR ET SPECTACLE | 22.09.2023
Première dont nous sommes tous fières et fiers ce soir, alors que Chicks ROCK Media s’allie à Metal Universe pour couvrir un spectacle local attendu et unique; alors qu’AETERNAM (QC) nous présentait un setlist acoustique et un setlist heavy metal, WARNING SIGN célébrait les 10 ans de leur premier album, Left to the Sharks. Flanquées de SOLEMN VISION, les deux formations de la ville de Québec avaient tout à gagner avec la foule en place, friande de son lourd plat favori. Comme le menu s’avérait copieux et que plusieurs spectacles avaient lieu à Québec en même temps, nous avons choisi de joindre nos deux médias afin de donner toute la visibilité que nos groupes locaux méritent.
Étonnamment (ou pas), AETERNAM a le mandat de débuter la soirée avec son setlist acoustique, devant trop peu de spectateurs à l’heure d’entrée en scène prévue, soit 19h30. Heureusement, le nombre d’amateurs augmentera graduellement avant la prestation du groupe, et c’est sous le coup de 19h40 que s’exécute la bande québécoise comptant un peu plus de 15 ans de carrière à son actif. Intrigant que d’imaginer AETERNAM en version acoustique; spoiler: c’est un succès retentissant.
Dès les premières notes de la pièce initiale, la voix d’Achraf Loudiy est mise de l’avant, sans obstruer les autres membres du groupe qui ne sont pas en reste. Plus moyen-orientale que jamais, la sonorité des pièces est envoûtante et laisse toute la place à des moments épiques, dont les subtilités sont infinies.
Durant Iram of the Pillars, la combinaison du chant de Loudiy avec celle de Rebecca Girard, aux back vocals, fonctionnent à merveille et nous permet de voir AETERNAM sous un autre angle.
Par moment, on se croirait dans un portrait du bon vieux Diablo 2, acte 2. Sans blague! Si l’auteur de ces lignes a bien entendu, sans accès direct au setlist, on a pu entendre Nightfall in Numidia et Al Qassam, entre autres. Vraiment, AETERNAM impressionne par sa polyvalence et d’envisager un album acoustique ne serait aucunement gênant. Bravo pour l’audace!
La formation SOLEMN VISION, venue de New York pour l’occasion, enchaine sous le coup de 20h15. On parle ici d’un death metal mélodique frôlant parfois la barrière du black metal, dont les airs sont plutôt familiers; ça ressemble à tout, finalement. Méconnue de la foule (et du public en général), c’est sans émotion que les amateurs les accueillent. Le son lourd, sans compromis du groupe semble hébéter les spectateurs, très peu réactifs en début de parcours jusqu’au milieu de la prestation des Américains.
Le chanteur, charismatique à souhait, brasse la soupe un brin et un petit mosh pit se forme finalement. À partir de ce moment, la foule montre enfin ses vraies couleurs; on assistera même à un wall of death en fin de prestation, signe que SOLEMN VISION a su un tant soit peu gagner le cœur des amateurs de la Vieille Capitale.
Après une pause de quelques minutes, les lumières se tamisent à nouveau pour l’excellente formation québécoise WARNING SIGN, qui n’avait pas foulé les planches d’une salle de spectacle depuis 4 ans. Après l’intro du classique We Will Rock You, c’est avec Left to the Sharks, pièce éponyme du premier album complet du groupe que ce dernier entame sa prestation. WARNING SIGN constitue un heavy metal pur, trempant parfois dans le thrash metal sans y baigner. On y retrouve des influences d’IRON MAIDEN, deJUDAS PRIEST, de METAL CHRUCH, bref… ce n’est pas gênant! Maxim Beaulieu, au chant, est aussi efficace qu’il l’a toujours été; une voix puissante, perçante, qui cadre parfaitement avec ce que WARNING SIGN propose comme son.
La bande est toutefois à son meilleur lorsque tous s’y mettent en même temps; ces moments pendant lesquels on aperçoit Jérôme Saint-Charles, à la basse, y aller d’un solo furieux avec Olivier Perrier-Maurel et Beaulieu à la guitare au rythme effréné de la batterie de Jean-Michel Perrier, sont la raison pour laquelle WARNING SIGN fait tourner des têtes.
Le meilleur exemple est la sublime Broken and Bare, pendant laquelle on sent une profonde communion entre les membres du groupe. C’est une prestation courte, mais efficace que nous sert la formation, présentant notamment Doomsday Prediction, Path to Destruction et Wake the Dead. Espérons ne pas avoir à attendre quatre autres longues années avant de revoir WARNING SIGN sur scène, puisque le futur est brillant en ce qui les concerne!
AETERNAM revient finalement sur scène pour son setlist métal vers 22h00, devant des spectacteurs gonflés à bloc. Dès les notes initiales de la première pièce, le constat est clair: AETERNAM est un groupe de qualité internationale. Le son est incroyable, la technique des musiciens l’est tout autant et le chanteur Achraf Loudiy est plus phénoménal que jamais.
Chaque mélodie nous transporte dans l’univers unique de la bande québécoise, dont les sonorités orientales ne sont pas sans rappeler ORPHANED LAND, avec une touche de SEPTICFLESH bien assumée. Il n’en demeure pas moins que rien ne ressemble réellement à AETERNAM, ce qui rend l’expérience d’autant plus agréable à chaque écoute.
Seule ombre au tableau: comment un groupe d’une telle qualité n’attire qu’une centaine d’amateurs dans son patelin natal alors qu’il s’agit d’une d’une des meilleures formations metal dans la Vieille Capitale? C’est au-delà de ma compréhension. Toujours est-il que durant toute la prestation du quatuor, un mosh pit incessant prend place au centre de l’Anti, les mélodies harmonieuses s’entremêlant aux sons gutturaux de Loudiy. Forte de plus de 15 ans de carrière, AETERNAM revisitera sa discographie, préférant tout de même évidemment les morceaux plus récents. Mention d’honneur aux divines Moongod et Damascus Gate, absolument hallucinantes et animant la foule de brillante façon.
Il va sans dire que personne n’est ressorti indifférent de sa soirée à l’Anti. Le métal local est plus vivant que jamais à Québec, et c’est une fierté pour MetalUniverse et Chicks ROCK Media de le faire rayonner!

A first we’re all proud of tonight, as Chicks ROCK Media teamed up with Metal Universe to cover an eagerly-awaited and unique local show; while AETERNAM (QC) presented us with an acoustic and a heavy metal set, WARNING SIGN celebrated the 10th anniversary of their debut album, Left to the Sharks. Flanked by SOLEMN VISION, the two Quebec City bands had everything to cheer about with the crowd in place, fond of their favorite heavy fare. As the menu proved to be copious, and with several shows taking place in Quebec City at the same time, we decided to join forces with both media to give our local bands all the exposure they deserved.
Surprisingly (or not), AETERNAM was given the mandate to kick off the evening with their acoustic set, in front of too few spectators at the scheduled 7:30 p.m. start time. Fortunately, the number of fans gradually increases before the band’s performance, and it’s at 7.40pm that the Quebec band, with a career spanning just over 15 years, performs. It’s intriguing to think of AETERNAM in an acoustic version; spoiler: it’s a resounding success.
From the very first notes of the opening track, Achraf Loudiy’s voice comes to the fore, without obstructing the other members of the band, who are not to be outdone. More Middle Eastern than ever, the sound of the pieces is spellbinding and leaves plenty of room for epic moments, the subtleties of which are infinite. During Iram of the Pillars, the combination of Loudiy’s vocals with those of Rebecca Girard on back vocals works wonders, allowing us to see AETERNAM from another angle. At times, it’s like a portrait of good old Diablo 2, act 2. No kidding! If the author of these lines heard correctly, without direct access to the setlist, we were able to hear Nightfall in Numidia and Al Qassam, among others. Truly, AETERNAM impresses with its versatility, and to consider an acoustic album would not be at all embarrassing. Shout out for the guts!
SOLEMN VISION, from New York, took over at 8:15pm. We’re talking melodic death metal here, sometimes skirting the barrier of black metal, whose sounds are rather familiar; it sounds like everything, after all. Unknown to the crowd (and the public in general), it’s without emotion that fans welcomed them. The band’s heavy, uncompromising sound seems to daze the audience, who are very unresponsive from the start to the middle of the Americans’ set. The singer, fully charismatic, shakes things up a bit, and a small mosh pit finally forms. From this moment, the crowd finally shows its true colors; there’s even a wall of death at the end of the show, a sign that SOLEMN VISION has won over the hearts of fans in the Old Capital.
After a few minutes’ pause, the lights dim once again for the excellent Quebec band WARNING SIGN, who hadn’t set foot in a concert hall for 4 years. After the intro to the classic We Will Rock You, the band kicked off their set with Left to the Sharks, the eponymous track from their first full-length album. WARNING SIGN is pure heavy metal, occasionally dipping into thrash metal without quite bathing in it. There are influences from IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, METAL CHRUCH, in short… it’s not embarrassing! Maxim Beaulieu’s vocals are as effective as they’ve always been: powerful, piercing and perfectly in tune with WARNING SIGN’s sound.
The band is at its best, however, when they’re all in it together; those moments when we see Jérôme Saint-Charles, on bass, take a furious solo with Olivier Perrier-Maurel and Beaulieu on guitar to the frantic rhythm of Jean-Michel Perrier’s drums, are the reason why WARNING SIGN turns heads. The best example is the sublime Broken and Bare, during which you can feel a deep communion between the band members. It’s a short but effective set, featuring Doomsday Prediction, Path to Destruction and Wake the Dead. Let’s hope we don’t have to wait another four long years to see WARNING SIGN live on stage again, as the future is bright for them.
AETERNAM finally return to the stage for their metal setlist at around 10.00 pm, in front of a capacity crowd. From the opening notes of the first song, it’s clear: AETERNAM is a band of international standing. The sound is breathtaking, the musicians’ technique is incredible and singer Achraf Loudiy is as phenomenal as ever. Each melody transports us into the unique universe of the Quebec band, whose oriental sounds are reminiscent of ORPHANED LAND, with a touch of SEPTICFLESH thrown in for good measure. The fact remains that nothing really is like AETERNAM, which makes the experience all the more enjoyable with every listen. The only shadow on the picture: how can a band of such quality only attract a hundred or so fans in their home town, when they’re one of the best metal bands in the Old Capital? It’s beyond my comprehension. The fact remains that throughout the quartet’s set, an incessant mosh pit takes place in the center of the Anti, as harmonious melodies intermingle with Loudiy’s guttural tones. With a career stretching back over 15 years, AETERNAM will be revisiting their discography, with a clear preference for more recent tracks. Special mention must go to the divine Moongod and Damascus Gate, absolutely mind-blowing that brilliantly animated the crowd.
Needless to say, no one left the Anti untouched. Local metal is more alive than ever in Quebec City, and MetalUniverse and Chicks ROCK Media are proud to help it shine!
