COUNTERPARTS + LIKE MOTHS TO FLAME + BOUNDARIES + OMERTA | IMPÉRIAL BELL | 23.07.2023

Pendant un temps, organiser un show un dimanche soir était risqué à Québec. Il était possible qu’on ne se retrouve qu’avec une dizaine de spectateurs. Mais je crois que c’est chose du passé, puisqu’une fois de plus, j’ai assisté à une soirée où la salle était bien remplie. Il faut dire que la liste des groupes laissait présager une soirée plutôt diversifiée pour les amateurs de metalcore.

OMERTA 
Membres : Dani, Zorn, Carlos, Han et Gustavo

La soirée s’ouvre sur OMERTA, un groupe de nu metalcore de Houston, Texas.

Ils ont su réchauffer la place assez rapidement puisqu’on a eu droit à un circle pit dès la 2^e pièce. Je ne connaissais pas OMERTA avant cette soirée, mais je peux dire que, même si le metalcore n’est pas mon style favori, j’ai fait une belle découverte avec ce groupe aux allures de Animes japonais et dont le bassiste est un sacré showman.

BOUNDARIES
Membres : Matt McDougal – voix, Tim Sullivan – drum, Nathan Calcagno – bassist, Cody DelVecchio and Cory Emond – guitares.

Le groupe de metalcore en provenance du Connecticut était attendu de pied ferme. (Ne pas confondre avec le groupe Québécois qui a été repabtisé sous le nom de DON’T TRY.) Malgré tout, on a dû attendre au 3e morceau, My Body Is A Cage, avant de voir de l’action dans le “mosh pit”. À mon avis, BOUNDARIES est clairement un groupe fait pour la scène.

Leur énergie, particulièrement les nombreuses pirouettes du bassiste, m’ont fait apprécier certaines pièces qui, sur album, me paraissaient trop longues. Coup de coeur à l’agressivité et la précision chirurgicale de Burying Brightness de l’album du même nom.

LIKE MOTHS TO FLAME
Membres : Chris Roetter – Voix, Zach Pishney – Guitare, Roman Garcia – Drums

Le groupe originaire de l’Ohio, LIKE MOTHS TO FLAME,qui semble avoir un problème récurent à conserver ses membres, a réussi à me surprendre. Le groupe, qui compte actuellement 3 membres officiels, était accompagné d’un 2e guitariste dont je ne connais pas l’identité. Tout au long de sa prestation, le frontman de LIKE MOTHS TO FLAME, Chris Roetter, a incité la foule à participer.

En commençant par faire approcher le public en donnant une leçon de marche. Par la suite, il n’a pas lésiné sur les “Jump! Jump!” sur les morceaux tels que Deathmarks, GNF, I Solemnly Swear pour finir par se déchaîner totalement sur Burry Your Pain.

COUNTERPARTS
Membres : Brendan Murphy – voix, Jesse Doreen et Tyler Williams – guitares, Kyle Brownlee – drum

Le groupe Ontarien de hardcore melodique/metalcore COUNTERPARTS,en tête d’affiche, était également très attendu par plusieurs. Dès les premières notes de Whispers of Your Death on a vu les adeptes de stage diving se jeter dans la foule à un rythme difficile à gérer pour les fans présents dans la fosse. Ce soir, c’était le dernier show de la tournée et COUNTERPARTS nous a gratifiés de quelques surprises, comme des participations des membres des autres groupes. Nous avons eu droit à 12 pièces, parmis lesquelles les succès Love me, Whispers of Your Death, Bound to the Burn ou encore Monument. Après quelques morceaux, on a vu le drummer de Boundaries arriver sur scène et installer un tapis devant le “drum stage”. Au morceau suivant, son bass drum et ainsi de suite, morceau par morceau. 

La crowd était là pour COUNTERPARTS et le groupe lui a bien rendu. L’espèce de trou béant qui a tendance à se former lors des show hardcore et metalcore s’était enfin refermé. Il faisait chaud, mais les fans s’en foutaient. Le stage diving et le crowd surfing se pratiquaient au masculin comme au féminin, c’était beau à voir. 

Puis, pause…

Acclamations!!!

Enfin, COUNTERPARTS est revenu sur scène en compagnie des musiciens et chanteurs de tous les autres groupes de la tournée pour une méga interprétation de Disconnect. Il semblait y avoir une réelle complicité entre tous. Un mot pour cette finale : WOW!

For a while, organizing a show on a Sunday evening was risky in Quebec City. It was possible to end up with only a dozen or so spectators. But I think that’s a thing of the past, as once again, I attended an evening where the room was packed. It must be said that the line-up of bands foreshadowed a rather diverse evening for metalcore fans.

OMERTA 
Members: Dani, Zorn, Carlos, Han and Gustavo

The evening opened with OMERTA, a nu metalcore band from Houston, Texas. They warmed up the place pretty quickly, with a circle pit as early as the 2nd song. I didn’t know OMERTA before this evening, but I can say that, even if metalcore isn’t my favorite style, I made a great discovery with this Japanese Anime-looking band whose bassist is quite a showman.

BOUNDARIES

The metalcore band from Connecticut was eagerly awaited. (Not to be confused with the Quebec band that has been re-branded as DON’T TRY.) Even so, we had to wait until the 3rd track, My Body Is A Cage, before seeing any action in the mosh pit. In my opinion, BOUNDARIES are clearly a band made for the stage. Their energy, particularly the bassist’s many pirouettes, made me appreciate certain pieces that, on album, seemed too long. I particularly liked the aggressiveness and surgical precision of Burying Brightness from the album of the same name.

LIKE MOTHS TO FLAME

Ohio band LIKE MOTHS TO FLAME, who seem to have a recurring problem retaining members, somehow managed to surprise me. The band, which currently has 3 official members, was accompanied by a 2nd guitarist whose I don’t know. Throughout his set, LIKE MOTHS TO FLAME frontman Chris Roetter got the crowd involved. He began by getting the audience to approach him by giving a walking lesson. Afterwards, he didn’t skimp on the « Jump! Jump! » on tracks such as Deathmarks, GNF, I Solemnly Swear, and finally went completely wild on Burry Your Pain.

Ontario melodic hardcore/metalcore headliner COUNTERPARTS was also highly anticipated by many. From the very first notes of Whispers of Your Death, stage diving enthusiasts threw themselves into the crowd at a pace that was hard to manage for the fans in the pit. Tonight was the last show of the tour, and COUNTERPARTS graced us with a few surprises, including guest appearances by members of other bands. We were treated to 12 songs, including the hits Love me, Whispers of Your Death, Bound to the Burn and Monument. After a few songs, Boundaries’ drummer came on stage and set up a carpet in front of the drum stage. Next came his bass drum, and so on, piece by piece. 

The crowd was there for COUNTERPARTS, and the band returned the honor. The sort of open hole that tends to form at hardcore and metalcore shows had finally closed. It was hot, but the fans didn’t care. Stage diving and crowd surfing were being practiced by men and women alike, and it was a sight to behold. 

Then, pause…

Crowds cheer!!!

Finally, COUNTERPARTS returned to the stage with musicians and singers from all the other bands from the tour for a mega interpretation of Disconnect. There seemed to be a real complicity between them all. One word for this closing concert: WOW!
