THE DAMN TRUTH + HIPSHOT | 17.11.2021 | L’IMPÉRIAL BELL

Je pensais me rendre à une soirée à l’allure un peu romantique (tables avec chandelles allumées, fleurs sur la scène…). Mais ce fut une tout autre aventure car je me suis retrouvée avec de telles émotions que j’avais l’impression d’être dans des montagnes russes. Mais c’est du Rock & Soul après tout. Les responsables : THE DAMN TRUTH et HIPSHOT. Avec mon humble intégrité j’avais très hâte, mais j’étais un peu vendue d’avance car je connais bien les deux groupes et leur implacable persévérance.

Fraîchement revenus de leur tournée au Royaume-Uni, HIPSHOT sont arrivés et se sont installés avec des fleurs (le seul truc non authentique de la soirée, si je puis dire). Sans oublier leur habituelle ambiance punk qui s’est parfaitement équilibrée avec le rock soul des têtes d’affiche. Explosifs dès le début, ils donnent beaucoup aux gens déjà assis et fébriles. Avec une énergie fluide qui semble connecter la majorité (et en figer quelques-uns), ils ont joué des titres choisis de leurs albums, y compris deux nouvelles chansons. Un avant-goût d’un futur EP! Personnellement, juste la bonne quantité de colère pour un spectacle du type « essayez-de-rester-assis ». HIPSHOT se produira à nouveau le 12 décembre prochain, à La Source De La Martinière avec THE CREEPSHOW.

Et puis il y a THE DAMN TRUTH… Du premier riff jusqu’à la fin, ce fut de pures émotions. La voix de Lee-La Baum était brute et si bien soutenue par Tom, PY et Dave que la précision sonore du groupe semblait aussi bien sinon mieux que sur les enregistrements.

En commençant par la chanson-titre de Now or Nowhere, This Is Who We Are Now, ils ont interprété tous les succès de leurs trois albums. J’ai eu la chair de poule à plusieurs reprises pendant la soirée, en particulier durant la très émouvante « Lonely » où la participation de la foule a renforcé le sentiment de communauté.

À la fin, je ne pouvais plus rester assise et je me suis levée pour danser comme je le fais dans mon salon (quand personne ne me regarde). Tout comme la plupart des gens qui se sont aussi levés et ont commencé à bouger. Le groupe en est au début de sa tournée mondiale qui l’emmènera en Europe en décembre et qui finira en février, en Angleterre. 

Dans un monde où tout est souvent trop rapide ou trop lent, c’était l’amortisseur qui était nécessaire. Un moment intemporel partagé avec colère, joie, groove, souffrance et amour.

I thought I was going to some tame evening to enjoy a somewhat romantic night (tables with lit candles, flowers on stage). But it was something else and I was left with such emotions that it felt like I was on a roller coaster. But this is Rock and Soul after all.  Those responsible were THE DAMN TRUTH and HIPSHOT. And with humble integrity, I was very existed and a little sold before the show because I know both bands well and their relentless perseverance.

Fresh from their return from a tour of the United Kingdom. HIPSHOT came in with a flower set-up (the only fake thing of the evening, may I say) and their usual punk vibe that balanced very well with the soulful rock of the headliners. They blast hard from the start, giving a lot to the people who are already seated and feverish.With a flowing energy that seems to engage most and freeze a few, they played titles from all over the timeline, including two news songs. A sneak peak of a future EP! Personally, just the right amount of anger for a try-to-stay-seated show. HIPSHOT will be performing again on December 12 at La Source De La Martinière with THE CREEPSHOW.

And then there was THE DAMN TRUTH. From the first riff up until the end, it was pure emotion. Lee-La Baum’s voice was raw and so well supported by Tom, PY and Dave that the band’s audio accuracy sounded as good, if not better than on record.

Starting with the title track of Now or Nowhere, This Is Who We Are Now, they performed all their hits from the available three albums.  I felt goosebumps many times during the night especially at the very moving « Lonely » where the crowd participation reinforced the community feeling of the evening. 

By the end, I couldn’t sit still and got up dancing like I do in my living room (when no one is watching). And so did most of the people that also got up and started moving. The group is at the start of his world tour which will take them to Europe in December and end in February, in England.

In a world where everything is often too fast or too slow, this was the buffer that was needed. A timeless moment shared with anger, joy, groove, pain and love.
